Summary

The Samsung Odyssey G5 is a broad monitor lineup that spans VA and IPS LCD panels in 27", 32", and 34" ultrawide sizes, with a newer QD-OLED variant (G50SF) that's become a fan favorite. Reddit sentiment splits sharply by panel type: the VA versions are consistently criticized for heavy ghosting and black smearing that rivals in the same price range simply don't have, while the IPS versions are generally praised as solid budget 1440p picks. The QD-OLED G50SF stands apart from the rest of the lineup, earning enthusiastic reviews for its matte coating, motion clarity, and OLED-quality image at an accessible price. Dead pixel issues and quality control problems appear repeatedly in threads about the 32" G50D IPS model specifically, with multiple users reporting defects out of the box. Overall, which G5 you get matters enormously — this is not a single monitor but a family with wildly different experiences.

Pros

  • The QD-OLED G50SF variant delivers true OLED motion clarity and vibrant colors with a semi-matte coating that avoids the smudging and micro-scratch issues plaguing glossy QD-OLED panels from competitors like AOC
  • IPS versions (G53F, G50D) offer 1440p at 165–200Hz for as low as $130–$180 on sale, making them among the most affordable QHD high-refresh options available
  • The aggressive 1000R curvature on VA and curved models is polarizing but has a loyal fanbase — users who prefer deep immersion for sim racing or widescreen gaming consistently praise it
  • FreeSync Premium with unofficial G-Sync compatibility works reliably across most variants, confirmed by multiple Nvidia GPU owners in r/buildapcsales and r/buildapc threads
  • The 34" ultrawide VA model received strong SDR performance scores from Hardware Unboxed, reportedly outperforming higher-end monitors like the G7 and AW2721D in that specific metric
  • Firmware updates have addressed early limitations — the QD-OLED G50SF received a DP 1.4 update enabling 10-bit color at 180Hz, fixing what was initially flagged as the monitor's biggest flaw

Cons

  • The VA versions suffer from severe ghosting and dark-level smearing that multiple reviewers and redditors describe as unacceptable for gaming — the G5 uses an older slow VA panel, not the fast HVA found in the G7
  • Dead pixel rates on the 32" G50D IPS model are alarmingly high based on community reports — at least two separate users in a single thread received defective units, one getting two consecutive bad panels before getting a refund
  • Samsung no longer manufactures its own LCD panels and sources them from third parties, which one commenter cited as a reason to choose LG over Samsung for IPS monitors at similar price points
  • The 32" VA model has a documented frame-peeling issue affecting the screen border, with Reddit threads dedicated to fixing it — something to factor in for long-term ownership
  • The QD-OLED G50SF ships without pre-calibrated color modes, requiring manual calibration or a colorimeter for accurate color work — no sRGB clamp or factory-calibrated preset is available out of the box
  • At $250 for the VA version, several community members argue you're overpaying for a panel that a $219 alternative or any similarly priced IPS monitor would beat on motion handling — the Samsung brand name carries a price premium over actual performance

VA or IPS? The G5 You Buy Determines the Experience You Get

Reddit threads make clear this isn't one monitor with minor variants — it's two entirely different products sharing a name. VA G5 owners report ghosting so bad it's off-putting in fast-paced games, while IPS G5 owners at the same price point tend to be satisfied. Knowing which panel is under the hood before purchasing is non-negotiable.

The G50SF QD-OLED Is the G5 Samsung Should've Led With

While the LCD variants occupy a crowded and contentious budget segment, the QD-OLED G50SF has emerged as a standout for its matte anti-reflective coating — a feature owners of glossy QD-OLED panels from AOC and others have specifically switched to avoid. Users coming from high-end IPS and even other OLEDs call the image quality a genuine surprise at the price.

32" G50D Buyers Are Playing QC Roulette

The 32" IPS G50D has attracted a disproportionate share of dead pixel complaints — with multiple Reddit users reporting defective units straight from the box and Samsung's warranty threshold requiring three or more dead pixels before a replacement is issued. For a monitor in this price range, that policy has frustrated buyers who expected better out-of-box reliability.

I recommend the LG 27GN800 for it's similar cost, same features and flat screen

The G5 shouldn't even use the Odyssey branding. It's a cheap, inferior product that can't hold a candle to the G7 or G9. The G7 and G9 are known for being VA panels without the smearing, but the G5 doesn't use the same technology and has your standard VA smearing, making it really hard to recommend for gaming. At that exact same price point you can get 1440p, high refresh IPS panels that will have much better motion clarity.

If it's primarily for gaming, curved is fine. It narrows the necessary physical FOV while maintaining the same in-game FOV (less eye strain). It also makes simulators a bit more immersive.

I bought a curved monitor about a year ago and was very happy with it. I've had to temporarily switch back to my flat now for about a week, and I can't wait to go back to the curved one again!

Ghosting, but for $250, what can you expect? :)

It's a VA panel and my previous monitor is a 32" IPS so, while the colors on IPS are as wonderful as they say, I have been very pleased with this VA panel so far.

Was worried about getting a curved monitor myself a few years back, but it was the cheapest with the specs I wanted, but after a couple of days of 'this is odd' I got used to it and it's fine, I don't really notice that it's much better than a flat screen, but it's certainly not worse.

I couldn't agree more about the coating; matte is so much easier to keep in good condition. I've had the Samsung G60SD for over a year, and I'm really happy with it. In my apartment, glossy would be unusable anyway.

Only return it if you hate the ghosting. The new alienware 3225dm is a curved 32" VA panel. I've tested it in store and saw no ghosting on the ufotest at 180hz. Its not that much more than what you spent on the g5. If you have a $600 budget you can probably get an OLED on sale too. Brand doesnt matter but AOC usually has qd-oleds for more affordable prices.

Worst monitor of the last 15 years. A 120€ monitor sold for 250€. You got scammed.

I have it. Love it. Much better than the 1080p 75hz sitting to the left of it.

Be aware, 1000R is a very hard curvature. Also, 1ms grey to grey is about 4.2ms. Unless you are extremely gifted, wont see a difference.

After decades of LCDs, finally the monitor market is moving towards OLED and MiniLED. Monitors are still underrated. The most important part of any setup imo.

If you want the truth here, the G5 is like the perfect sweet spot of premium features with budget-friendly prices. Got mine on sale on BestBuy for $250-$260. Great color and the refresh rate is good enough for almost all gaming.

Dark level smearing, shit monitor. Not an acceptable response time to be a competitive monitor.

I bought the 32" Samsung G50D monitor over 32" LG Ultragear because it is 25% cheaper while both basically have identical specs. First G50D I brought home — TWO bright/dead pixels, one grey at the left edge of the screen, another one is purple at the center-left of the screen; hence, can't ignore it if I tried.

I bought one too, I've been looking for good budget oled for a long time and this one I had to buy. Games look excellent and insanely clear picture even in the fastest gaming action. Yes it feels a bit cheap and dp is only 1.2 but still im pretty sure its one of the best at this price for gaming.

Is it the IPS one or VA one? IPS one is decent. VA is trash.

I second this, I own the G5 and I'm disappointed. There's def "blur" and it doesn't have VRR

I have this monitor. I like it. The width with that curve feels good. I came from a 4k 60Hz monitor. Bought it on sale. Don't know if I would have wanted to pay full price for it as there are comparable options.

I actually got this very monitor the other day. You don't even notice the curve during usage, and its feature set is very nice. Freesync Premium works a treat.

The thing is that G5 VA panel is actually bad. It's not that new generation fast HVA but the old slow one.

Just a standard run-of-the-mill VA monitor that's going to have ghosting, but with that budget there's not much that's significantly better. I'd suggest seeing if there are any IPS monitors at that price instead.

I have a g9 in the middle and 2 G5's on the side. I love all of them a lot. The curve isn't anything that will negatively affect you, just a matter of preference.

I have this monitor and I love it. Really inky blacks and the curve is fantastic. It could be brighter but at this price point it doesn't get much better.

It's not even close. I had a G5 ultrawide recommended to me, hell no man. The difference to a "fast VA" like used in the AOC CU34XP I got now is ridiculous. Like that should be the minimum anyone goes for.

One thing I forgot to mention: Monitor has ancient DP 1.2 (biggest flaw imo). You can use 10bit colors only at 144hz. Not a deal breaker personally as I mostly use it gaming and not any photo editing etc, but absolutely brainless they didnt put 1.4

I bought this monitor myself just over a week ago. I updated the firmware to run it at 180hz with 10 bit colour. I'm very impressed. The brightness is more than enough for me and HDR looks great. I'm running VRR and haven't noticed any flicker. I'm also a fan of the matte coating and I haven't noticed any impact on clarity.

It was a nice monitor that I enjoyed a few years ago, as it was my first 2k monitor, but apart from the ghosting, keep in mind that the 32' version has a very common problem where the screen literally peels off.

Bought one, it arrived with a broken pixel. Samsung customer support next to useless and took several weeks of back and forth just for a simple exchange. New one finally arrived. Also broken pixel...

This monitor has satisfied my 2k gaming experience the colors are deep blacks as much as a qhd ips can be compared to a OLED. The refresh can be set to as low as 60hz up to 180hz which is nice.

I bought mine 2 years ago for like $350 with tax and warranty. Best purchase I've ever made. It doesn't have HDR support so if you're planning on running a console you won't get full 4k. If you have a PC and are looking for a top of the line monitor. Brother, it delivers!

G5 G53F is actually solid for the price, especially at $180.. 1440p 165Hz IPS. For casual gaming and everyday use, it's totally fine

Just got mine. Has a little more backlight bleed around the edges than I would've liked but I also think it could've been way worse, it's just IPS stuff so I won't return it for that since it doesn't bother me that much. Other than that it's pretty solid, good image quality and responsiveness.

It's pretty good, can't seem to adjust it though, brightness kind of sucks and had to mess with color settings, but hey, 130$ for 1440p 200hz? Yes plz

Last night my S27CG554EU (Samsung Odyssey G5 27") glitched, and after that i had like a tinted green filter on my screen that i could not get away. tried everything. As a last resort i went to Samsungs page and downloaded the latest firmware for S27CG554EU on a USB stick and the update actually worked! I love this monitor, so i'm happy i could fix it.
