Summary

The Samsung Odyssey G50D is a flat IPS gaming monitor available in 27" and 32" variants, offering 1440p resolution at 180Hz — and Reddit's overall verdict leans positive, especially when bought on sale. Users consistently praise the color vibrancy, smooth 180Hz experience, and clean minimalist design. However, a vocal subset of buyers — particularly on the 32" model — report dead pixel issues out of the box, raising real QC concerns. The monitor is best suited for budget-conscious PC gamers who want a reliable IPS panel without overpaying, and it competes directly with the LG UltraGear lineup at a meaningful price discount.

Pros

  • Vibrant, accurate colors out of the box — multiple users describe the IPS panel as bright and punchy, with 99% sRGB coverage that holds up well for both gaming and productivity
  • 180Hz refresh rate delivers noticeably smooth gameplay, especially for users upgrading from 60Hz TN or VA panels
  • Flat IPS panel eliminates the VA ghosting and poor viewing angles that plagued earlier Samsung G5 (curved VA) models
  • DisplayHDR 400 certification and 350 nits brightness make it usable in moderately lit rooms, and some users found the G50A calibration ICC profile significantly improves color pop
  • Competitive pricing — frequently goes on sale in the $180–$265 range, making it one of the better value 1440p IPS options at that tier
  • 10-bit support is possible at 120Hz via DisplayPort, giving color-sensitive users a workaround beyond the default 8-bit+dithering output

Cons

  • Dead pixel complaints are disproportionately common on the 32" model — multiple users report receiving 2+ dead/stuck pixels, and Samsung's replacement policy requires 3+ defective pixels for a warranty claim, making resolution difficult
  • IPS glow is present and noticeable in dark environments — one user described it as the worst IPS glow they'd experienced across multiple units, though others found it typical for the panel type
  • DP 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 connections limit the monitor to 8-bit color at 180Hz, and 10-bit requires dropping to 120Hz — no path to 10-bit at full refresh rate
  • Motion stutter and judder appear when playing 24fps video content at higher refresh rates; enabling FreeSync or dropping to 120Hz partially resolves this, but it's not seamless out of the box
  • Samsung no longer manufactures its own LCD panels, according to store staff and community reports — raising questions about long-term panel consistency and QC compared to LG, which still produces its own IPS panels
  • Out-of-box color calibration requires manual tuning — default settings skew warm/yellow for some units, and finding the right white balance takes trial and error

Dead Pixel Roulette: The 32" G50D's Biggest Risk

Multiple Reddit users received 32" G50D units with 2 or more dead pixels, and Samsung's warranty policy won't act until you hit 3 — meaning you could end up stuck with a visibly defective panel. Buyers recommend inspecting thoroughly in-store before leaving.

Best Budget 1440p IPS — But Only at Sale Price

At its regular MSRP, the G50D faces stiff competition from LG's UltraGear lineup, which offers comparable specs and a better QC track record. But when it drops to the $180–$250 range, Reddit consistently calls it one of the strongest value plays in 1440p IPS gaming.

Movie Watchers Beware: This Is a Gaming Monitor First

Users who tried the G50D for movie playback ran into 24fps judder at higher refresh rates, limited HDR performance, and no 10-bit color at full speed. Enabling FreeSync helps, but this panel is clearly optimized for gaming — not cinematic content consumption.

Maybe I'm weird but I like 32" 1440p. It's the same pixel density as 24" 1080p which most of us used for years so it just seems like an extension and enlargement of what I already know.

I got this exact monitor from best buy in an open box excellent for $56. I thought it was going to be too good to be true but lo and behold it was in perfect condition with the box only cracked open, literally still all the wrapping and everything still on. It's a great monitor! Especially for that price.

Good decision, since you can't afford oled and you don't want the AOC due to its negatives. Sounds like you picked the option that was good for you

I have the Samsung for about two weeks now, i absolutely love the monitor, colors are great, response time too. Minimalistic design, and the 180hz is very good

I just picked one up and love it also. I was reluctant. The older G5's had mixed reviews. But, I believe they were VA panels. But, this newer one is IPS.

I bought the 32" Samsung G50D monitor over 32" LG Ultragear because it is 25% cheaper while both basically have identical specs. First G50D I brought home — TWO bright/dead pixels, one grey at the left edge of the screen, another one is purple at the center-left of the screen; hence, can't ignore it if I tried, it's purple on white whenever I browse websites and do any productivity work.

I would be hesitant to get a 32" 1440p. I would say if you are interested in OLED hold out for a month or two because there have been several OLED deals at ~$400 new and prime day had a lot of really good deals on open box OLED's priced below $400 (with warranty depending on the models).

Very similar to other IPS monitors. Nothing special here. This is not a monitor for dark environment.

You did fine. <$200 for entry level 1440p 180hz is great. It will last you until you need/want a new one or until you die. You pretty much can't go wrong with an IPS.

I'm pretty sure the G50D can't do 10-bit due to the lower DP 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 versions. Definitely not a multimedia buy in my book for lots of reasons. I mainly needed a solid work monitor quickly after my old one died.

I have the G50D, it arrived yesterday. I have limited testing with the monitor, but I may post a review to youtube by the end of the week. Mine is the 32 inch variant. I feel that it is a very good upgrade from my Gigabyte G32qc as that was a VA panel and had ghosting issues. I have zero ghosting issues, my colors are vibrant out of the box, and I tested black levels, which they looked very good for me. I got this monitor for 244.00 on sale at Amazon which feels like a steal for me.

I got the G50D 27" from Best Buy (priced matched down to $229). First impressions after a few days is that it's definitely solid and works great for my needs. Colors look good, brightness is good (though I wish it hit 400nits instead of 350) and the 180hz is great as well though nothing mind blowing.

Been using it for a while now, no issues and am extremely satisfied with it. If u are planning on playing Esports titles then look into higher hz.

Bought one, it arrived with a broken pixel. Samsung customer support next to useless and took several weeks of back and forth just for a simple exchange. New one finally arrived. Also broken pixel...

I won my G50D 32" off an auction couple months ago. But, this monitor has satisfied my 2k gaming experience the colors are deep blacks as much as a qhd ips can be compared to a OLED. The refresh can be set to as low as 60hz up to 180hz which is nice.

Gonna follow up on this: the monitor is incredible. Sharp, colorful, smooth, everything I wanted from a 1440p monitor. Sorry about your dead pixel nightmare OP, but this display is a direct upgrade to my old 1080p display.

Update for those considering the Samsung G50D for watching video/movies: Solved most of the stutter/judder by turning on FreeSync in the monitor's Game menu. Didn't expect I'd need to do that for a non-gaming use, such as movies. The stutter/judder isn't gone completely, but FreeSync reduced it noticeably to where I felt it was now watchable.

It happened to me as well, i fixed it by (besides turning freesync on) lowering the refresh rate to 144 in my pc display settings, in case anyone reading this finds it helpful

Please don't buy it, I returned it after only a few days, horrible screen, terrible blacks, light leaks in the corners and terrible HDR. Go to MSI, AOC, or something else but not the g5.

I have one, can confirm it's 8-bit with dithering under Win11. I paid ~$250 (USD) for it, a few weeks ago. It's a sizable upgrade to the display on my Lenovo Legion 5! The G5 is both brighter and BG3 seems much more vivid than on the laptop. I like this monitor, but I don't know if I'd pay $410 for it.

I also got my Samsung Odyssey G65B 3 weeks ago on a sale. It has no dead pixels, but the random turning off for 1-2 seconds has been driving me crazy. Tried bunch of things I read online and nothing works so far. Apart from this, its not a bad monitor at all. Feels like Samsung QC really went down the drain compared to their old days.

IPS is sure to be a good upgrade from VA panels and OLED isn't all what it seems. It's really not that big of an upgrade from my QHD VA if I'm being honest.

I turned the color tone to 0 and it became too blue to the point where the white wasn't white anymore. The settings are not VERY bad per say, just that my 1080p monitor is looking 5x better while I use both of them.

I just bought the monitor yesterday and saw the same youtube video and i have the same custom settings. for my experience I also didnt like the warm yellowish tint so i put the color tone to standard then there is that cool cyan look so when i played with the color filters for color blindness (which i have Deutan) it went away when i put it to Deutan30 and it also helped my colorblindness!

Using a USB-C out to DisplayPort input, it'll go up to 180Hz (though Win11 reports it as 179.95Hz).

Samsung DOES NOT make LCD panels no more (i assume because OLED is more profitable) so they are basically selling rebrands. LG on the other hand still makes their own panels. As i (and other commenters) said already, pick samsung at YOUR OWN RISK.

i picked up a lg ultragear from wal mart for 209. va panel. it looks pretty washed out compared to my old acer with inferior specs. nothing in settings really changes that (for example setting the LG to vivid picture mode doesnt really make it much more vivid, still nowhere near the vibrant color)

I used an HP x32 1440p IPS for over a year and it was fine. But then Samsung marked down the Odyssey Neo G7 32" curved 4K mini-LED to under $400 and that was the best purchase I made in quite a while. I didn't realize just how good a 32" 4k screen would look until it arrived and I'm still thrilled to use it every day.

Personally, I would've gone for the AOC model. It's the only mini LED panel I can think of that is reasonably priced and has true HDR and isn't an OLED. my wife has one and it's great compromise if you're weary of OLED burn-in and play a lot of single player titles.
