Summary

The Samsung Odyssey G55C is a budget-to-mid-range curved QHD gaming monitor available in 27" and 32" sizes, built around a VA panel with 1000R curvature, 165Hz refresh rate, and HDR10 support. Reddit sentiment is decidedly mixed — casual and content-focused users often come away satisfied, while gaming-focused users are vocal about the panel's slow real-world response times and motion handling issues. The monitor's deep blacks and high contrast ratio are genuine strengths, but the VA panel's ghosting and smearing are recurring complaints that push many users toward IPS or OLED alternatives at similar price points. At sale prices it finds defenders, but at full retail, the value case gets much harder to make.

Pros

  • Deep blacks and high contrast ratio are a real advantage in dark environments — users coming from IPS or TN panels notice the difference immediately, especially for movies and atmospheric games
  • 1000R curvature is genuinely immersive on the 27" and 32" sizes, with several long-term owners citing it as one of the monitor's strongest points
  • 165Hz refresh rate and QHD (2560x1440) resolution deliver a solid visual upgrade over 1080p 60Hz setups — particularly appreciated by users stepping up from older budget panels
  • FreeSync Premium support works well with AMD GPUs, and several users confirmed unofficial G-Sync compatibility with Nvidia cards via control panel settings
  • At discounted prices ($106–$210 range seen in sale threads), the cost-per-feature ratio becomes competitive, and multiple budget-focused users were satisfied with their purchase at those price points
  • Color accuracy improves significantly with manual tuning through Nvidia control panel or OSD adjustments — users who dialed in their settings reported noticeably better vibrancy

Cons

  • Real-world response time is widely criticized — multiple users report it performing closer to 16ms in practice despite the 1ms MPRT spec, making fast-paced gaming a noticeably worse experience than marketed
  • Motion smearing and ghosting on VA panels are a documented issue here; one user posted ghosting test images and several described visible camera-turn artifacts in games
  • Eye strain complaints appear frequently, with users linking it to PWM dimming at low brightness levels — the G55C does not use flicker-free backlight technology
  • Screen coating on the 27" version has a known peeling issue reported by multiple users after 1–3 years of ownership, raising long-term durability concerns
  • 32" at 1440p yields lower pixel density than the 27" version, with several users noting soft text for productivity and reading — the 27" is the more recommended size for mixed use
  • Meaningful IPS and OLED alternatives exist at comparable sale prices — the Dell G2724D (fast IPS, G-Sync), MSI 27" at Costco (~$169), and budget OLEDs are all cited as better options for gaming

Eye Strain Is Real — And It's Not Just You

A recurring thread on r/Monitors confirms what many G55C owners have quietly suspected: the monitor's PWM dimming causes genuine eye fatigue at lower brightness settings. Tuning out dynamic contrast and capping brightness at 40–50 helps, but some users never found a comfortable baseline and moved on.

Great Deal or Mediocre Monitor? The Price Is Doing a Lot of Work

At $106–$170 open-box or sale, Reddit's tone toward the G55C softens considerably — one user owns two and calls them decent. At $260–$300 full retail, the calculus flips fast. Fast IPS panels and entry-level OLEDs are now competitive in that range, and the G55C's VA drawbacks stop feeling like acceptable trade-offs.

Casual Users Love It. Competitive Gamers Don't.

The G55C has two distinct Reddit audiences: content watchers and casual gamers who appreciate the contrast and curve, and motion-sensitive players who immediately clock the smearing. If your library skews toward slow-paced RPGs, strategy, or media consumption, you'll likely be fine. If you play shooters or anything fast-paced, Reddit's verdict is consistent: look elsewhere.

This monitor is complete garbage, real world response time is like 16ms. The IPS version of the G5 is good. This VA panel though needs to be avoided.

Avoid, horrendous response times and motion performance.

If you mean the Dell G2724D, then the Dell wins. Especially if you want G-Sync and the Dell is a fast IPS panel.

Even 'being VA' it's going to be a night and day difference quality wise compared to a 10 year old monitor.

Personally I prefer VA over IPS panels because I don't have any direct sunlight in my workspace and don't need a bright screen. On dark scenes every IPS panel I've used had IPS glow and especially cheap models had uneven light bleed.

It's a VA panel and my previous monitor is a 32" IPS so, while the colors on IPS are as wonderful as they say, I have been very pleased with this VA panel so far.

The colors are better on an IPS by a significant margin BUT that's only when you compare them side by side. My personal thoughts are my TN panel's color was awful, my VA's colors are nice, and my IPS colors are beautiful.

Be aware, 1000R is a very hard curvature. Also, 1ms grey to grey is about 4.2ms. Unless you are extremely gifted, you won't see a difference.

DO NOT BUY. I have this monitor. I ordered the flat IPS and received this instead. I didn't know any better and kept it. Screen began peeling off within a year. 3 years later the bottom left backlight flickers. Response time is a lie and it has weird motion blur.

VA is much closer to IPS than TN.

To offer my opinion, I prefer my IPS panel to the VA one my roommate has. I sometimes use it as a second monitor and it seems to have a smearing effect when turning the camera in a game that we can't get rid of.

The $399 is a fake price. If you look at the price history it is often $259.

Avoid this, the screen starts peeling off after a while.

The thing is that G5 VA panel is actually bad. It's not that new generation fast HVA but the old slow one.

27" is too small for curved to matter.

It will be better than your old monitor but just note that PPI for 1440p at 32" is not good. You might be better off searching for one that's 27". A popular choice is the MSI 27" 1440p monitor you can often get at Costco for around $169.

32" at QHD, you can see every pixel and it would be so annoying.

I'm no expert on displays but I feel like there is some ghosting, but not horrible or experience ruining. It is barely noticeable if you play any high paced game where you are constantly looking around or moving.

OLED. I picked up a C4 a few months ago. It was my first OLED and for gaming specifically, my goodness. The response times, motion clarity, blacks — just incredible.

I was thinking about buying the Dell, I have seen bad reviews for the G5 though. The Dell seems to have much better colors and a better panel.

Good for productivity... or overkill at 1440p? I have dual FHD Samsungs that I really like, but I am wanting flat monitors for another workstation.

For this particular monitor I doubt we'd see a big discount come the next sale season. Maybe $5 or $10 more off but I wouldn't risk it going back to regular price for only that amount personally if you've been eyeballing it.

Yeah. It's not even close. I had a G5 ultrawide recommended to me, hell no man. The difference to a "fast VA" is ridiculous. Like that should be the minimum anyone goes for. And rarely is that information mentioned anywhere easy to find.

I have this monitor and I love it. Really inky blacks and the curve is fantastic. It could be brighter but at this price point it doesn't get much better.

I will never recommend a VA panel for gaming. Get IPS, OLED, mini LED, even TN but not VA.

I specifically bought the 27" of this one because I wanted the 1000R curve. So nice! Some people prefer a more mild curve but I like it a lot.

I really do like the 32" 1440p form factor — my 27" feels small in comparison, but you are right; the text is a smidge nicer on the 27". The pixel density difference between the two is real but not something that would stop me from buying another 32" 1440p.

I bought my first VA panel a couple of days ago and it should arrive today. I'm not sure why this sub hates them, but I guess I'll find out soon enough.

I love the G5 so far. I had to do some color correction in Nvidia control panel but after I did that it looked amazing.

VA panel, $259.99. Been watching the 32" 2K 120Hz market since I missed the deals I was looking for during boxing day. This is $80-$125 off.

I have 2, they're decent monitors that get a little too much hate. I also got them for $55 each so my opinion may be biased.

I have owned this monitor before. Used with PS5. Its colors are pretty mid.

Eye strain with that monitor is unfortunately common from what I've seen. The main culprits are usually PWM dimming at low brightness and overly aggressive sharpness. I'd try setting brightness to 40-50, contrast around 70, sharpness at 56 (neutral), and turn off any dynamic contrast or black equalizer features. Make sure local dimming is off since it causes brightness fluctuations.

This panel has significantly worse motion handling than the G7, keep that in mind. It'll have your usual VA panel drawbacks.

I bought mine 2 years ago for like $350 with tax and warranty. Best purchase I've ever made. It doesn't have HDR support so if you're planning on running a console you won't get full 4k. If you have a PC and are looking for a top of the line monitor. Brother, it delivers!

Tbh the 32" feels just a little too big, I think the 27" was a good call.

I don't recommend 32in for 1440p. Pixel density, text clarity and all that won't be great. Go for 34in ultrawide 3440x1440.
