Summary

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G60SF is a 27-inch QD-OLED gaming monitor running at 500Hz with a 1440p resolution, aimed squarely at competitive FPS players who want top-tier motion clarity. Community reception is mostly positive, with users praising the OLED image quality, the matte anti-glare coating (unique among QD-OLEDs), and the snappy 500Hz experience in esports titles like CS2, Valorant, and R6S. The main friction points are the DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC instead of DP 2.1, and a widely-reported OSD joystick that breaks easily. At street prices around $500–$600 with discounts, many users consider it excellent value, though some debate whether the step from 360Hz to 500Hz is meaningfully perceptible.

Pros

  • 500Hz refresh rate delivers noticeable motion clarity gains for fast-paced esports titles — CS2 and Valorant can comfortably hit 500+ FPS at 1440p on modern hardware
  • QD-OLED panel offers superior HDR color volume compared to WOLED alternatives, with deep blacks and vivid colors that users consistently praise over IPS
  • Matte anti-glare coating is the only one of its kind among QD-OLED monitors, making it a strong pick for bright room setups where glossy panels create distracting reflections
  • DSC over DP 1.4 is widely reported as imperceptible in real use — several owners ran side-by-side tests and found no visible artifacts, and HDMI 2.1 works as a clean alternative
  • Sturdy, easy-to-assemble stand that stays firm during gameplay; pixel cleaning and shift features run automatically to manage OLED longevity
  • Competitive pricing relative to the category — frequent deals brought it to $500–$600 with stacked discounts, making it one of the best value OLED monitors in its tier

Cons

  • DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC instead of DP 2.1 is a persistent community complaint — while usually imperceptible, DSC can cause compatibility issues with some GPU/driver combos and is seen as a cost-cutting move on a $1,000 monitor
  • OSD joystick on the back is widely reported to break quickly, with users noting it's nearly inevitable; workaround requires 3D printing a replacement part
  • The matte coating is stronger than on sibling models like the G60SD, which some users say softens image clarity for non-gaming use cases like text and productivity
  • No BFI (Black Frame Insertion) mode, which limits options for users who want CRT-style motion clarity without pushing native 500Hz framerates
  • The 360Hz-to-500Hz upgrade is debated — users coming from 240Hz feel the jump clearly, but those already at 360Hz report diminishing returns in day-to-day gaming
  • Loose port board on the back — pressing cables with any force pushes the I/O panel inward, a build quality issue noted by multiple owners

The OSD Joystick Will Break. Plan Accordingly.

Multiple owners across threads confirm the rear OSD joystick fails quickly — some say it's a matter of when, not if. The G61SH fixed this with physical arrow buttons, so if OSD navigation matters to you, that model is worth considering.

Is DP 1.4 on a $1,000 Monitor Acceptable in 2025?

The community is split. Hardcore users argue DSC is a point of failure that DP 2.1 would eliminate entirely; practical owners say they've had zero issues and can just use HDMI 2.1. Either way, competitors are already shipping DP 2.1 at similar prices.

The Only Matte QD-OLED — and That's a Real Trade-Off

The G60SF's matte coating is genuinely useful in bright rooms, but it's stronger than on the G60SD and G61SD, leading some users to report softer perceived sharpness. If you're primarily gaming in a dark room, glossy QD-OLED alternatives may look cleaner.

"less than $1000" is pretty funny when it costs $999

Why did they put displayport 1.4 on this monitor?

I'm glad reddit is persistently angry regarding companies cheaping out with DSC. This shouldn't be ignored. DSC is great and almost unnoticeable when it works, but the issues/incompatibility it causes when it doesn't work are just unnecessary pain, and often takes time for people to realize it's coming from DSC in the first place.

My understanding is that it's flat out cheaper and with dsc it's "enough". Last I checked there were also challenges with the lack of maturity of scalers that support dp 2.1.

DSC was excellent when 1.4 dropped as a way to push even further, but at this point I'm definitely calling bullshit. DSC should only be used to stretch what the highest current standard can do.

If you do a side by side comparison like blurbusters it's actually pretty easy to distinguish, it just doesn't make much enough of a difference to influence most people's purchases.

Not a chief but as someone who owns a DP 2.1 4k 240 monitor that I thought was end game, I'd much rather have this especially factoring the price difference. It's a tremendous value and honestly I don't know what gaming will look like 2-3 years from now since AI profits are eating into our hobby.

Allows you to run 240Hz with frame blanking for less smearing/ghosting.

Lol its not marketing fluff, especially when it comes to motion clarity. 500fps is easily reached in CS2, Valorant, Overwatch 2, Rainbow Six Siege X and Fortnite Performance Mode. Read up on the blurbusters article.

Esports titles. Cs2 Fortnite overwatch valorant etc etc etc….but just because the game you're playing doesn't reach 500fps doesn't mean you don't get the benefits of a 500hz OLED. I plan on running all those titles on fixed refresh and then stuff like battlefield 6 or whatever I'll use gsync. Not too worried about it.

Wasn't planning on spending money but this looked like a slick deal that was convenient for me. I've been using 2 Acer monitors with built in speakers that I got in 2021 and 2020 respectively. $529.99 after taxes thanks for the heads up OP.

I think you made a good decision. Currently, the Tandem WOELD monitors have terrible grey uniformity issues that causes horrible banding; I literally see a post about another one every day. Plus, QD-OLED still has superior HDR color volume. The only thing I would ask is did you want the Samsung model in particular because you want/need the matte screen? It is the only QD-OLED model that comes with a matte finish.

If you can control lighting, forget about WOLED for a while. I tried tandem after QD OLED and it's meh. Colors still not pop much as QD OLED, banding, grainy screen, and vrr flicker which I never encountered on QD OLED. Still like how true black glossy look in bright room though, but you won't get glossy with gigabyte.

While the free monitor was removed, I noticed the price was finally $499 in my cart and I have no idea why. I completed the purchase for $540 total and will be picking up from Best Buy on Thursday.

Its a great monitor probably one of the best 1440p ones on the market. It arrived and I already have it set up.

Wait for the influx of people defending the decision to put DP 1.4 that released in early 2016 on a $1000 monitor releasing in late 2025. I'm waiting for DP 2.1 80 gbps 500 Hz or 540 Hz 1440p OLEDs.

This seems like an insane discount. is this a buy now think later kind of purchase? I'm worried about text clarity b/c I'd like to have a single monitor setup this deal seems good enough to the point where I should just buy another cheap 4k monitor for work.

nah you can definitely run a good portion of esports titles at 500+ fps at 1440p. I average 500-600 all low settings with my r7 7700x and 7900gre.

I do have the 60SF, from my research, the SD would technically have better image quality because apparently it uses a less matte coating, its still matte but just not as strong as the one applied on the SF. I don't know why Samsung decided to change it up and apply a stronger matte coating but who knows, maybe because they wanted as little reflections as possible since this monitor is for competitive FPS. Personally I would still get the 60SF over the SD if it had a discount.

I really don't understand why people fixate over the DP. DSC is lossless and unperceivable as already proven by tests. If you don't wanna deal with DSC for whatever reason, you can just use HDMI and it works perfectly. I got this monitor at a black week discount and everything feels amazing - don't get discouraged by the fearmongering of DSC - its a helpful feature that doesn't affect performance (and you can just use HDMI).

I understand your PoV. The issue about viewing it as future proofing, to me, is that unlike a GPU which could have headroom for more performance… a monitor will always have the same number of pixels and bits per pixel. So you'll never push more data over the DisplayPort cable than you do today.

I don't but my brother is still getting eye strain from his G60SD which got the same coating as mine. If you get any eye strain I would just buy WOLED. The coating doesn't help.

I have the G61SD, I'm in a very bright room and it's not really that noticeable at all. The matte coating definitely helps with hiding the purple tint of the QD-OLED panel.

It's night and day different. Been using this same panel for a week now next to a 240Hz OLED of the same size.

Game Mode: Always ON (for 500Hz & Low Lag). Black Equalizer: 13~16 (Essential for seeing enemies in Tarkov's dark areas). HDR: ON in Windows, but set HDR Tone Mapping to 'Static' in the monitor menu for consistent brightness. Peak Brightness: High (to maximize OLED performance). OLED Care: Keep Pixel Shift ON and Logo Brightness to 'High' to prevent burn-in.

The monitor is excellent for those looking for these features. The OSD joystick breaks 100%, so it's just a matter of time. You can 3D print it. If you don't want these problems, the 240Hz G61SH model solved the control issue by completely replacing it with arrows.

It is designed to be 'visually' lossless. Thats not the same as lossless. Furthermore it can introduce artifacts or problems when it doesn't work properly, a point of failure for drivers / different hardware that doesnt exist if native 2.1 is used. So recap. 1. It's mathematically lossy 2. Point of failure, 3. The solution (dp2.1) already exists and we have cables for it. Might as well use it.

The difference from 120 Hz to 165 Hz is barely noticeable without side-by-side testing while the difference from 165 Hz to 200 Hz is quite noticeable and is humungous when going from 165 Hz to 240 Hz, so I can only imagine 360 Hz. The problem is that the sample-and-hold blur bottlenecks the motion clarity a ton when at any refresh rate below the 190ish to 200ish Hz area regardless of how fast the pixel transitions are.

pretty enjoyable to use, other than the normal reflections of ambient light which gives off that purple hue, but in the dark it still looks good. the 500hz is pretty damn responsive, but it feels not that much after 360hz in my experience. but playing cs 2 on this feels pretty good.

I literally had a 240hz right next to a 360hz, both plugged into the same GPU outputting the same game. HUGE difference in any game that has fast movement. However, I will say that after a short time, I can get used to 240hz and it feels fine again, but going back and forth between the 2, it's instantly noticeable.

I've owned both the MSI and the Samsung you are referring to, and they perform similar with different coatings.
