Summary

The Samsung Odyssey G80SD is a 32-inch 4K 240Hz QD-OLED monitor that Reddit's gaming community largely agrees offers one of the best panels available at its price point, with RTINGS naming it the best gaming OLED of 2024. The monitor's standout feature is its semi-matte coating, which not only reduces reflections for brighter room use but also measurably reduces the purple tint and text fringing common to glossy QD-OLED panels. Long-term owners consistently report zero burn-in even after thousands of hours of heavy use, and the QD-OLED panel itself draws near-universal praise. The catch is that Samsung wrapped this excellent panel in a Smart TV OS (Tizen), and the monitor's firmware and software experience ranges from merely annoying to actively problematic for some users. It's best described as a TV-monitor hybrid that excels when configured correctly but demands more patience than competing monitors.

Pros

  • Outstanding QD-OLED panel with vivid colors, deep blacks, and 4K 240Hz — long-term owners report zero burn-in even after 12+ hours of daily use over 7+ months
  • Semi-matte coating uniquely reduces the purple/magenta tint and text fringing typical of glossy QD-OLEDs, with RTINGS lab tests confirming better text clarity than Asus and Gigabyte glossy counterparts
  • Excellent value among 32-inch 4K OLEDs — regularly available at $600-$700 via EDU/EPP/AAA discounts vs $900-$1000+ for ASUS PG32UCDM
  • Built-in Tizen Smart TV delivers genuine perks: native 4K HDR streaming apps (Netflix, YouTube) that Windows browsers can't match, built-in speakers, remote control, and Hue Sync integration without the $200 Hue Sync Box
  • Vapor chamber + graphene sheet cooling system is considered the most overengineered thermal solution in this monitor class, helping maintain panel longevity and reducing ABL
  • Strong console compatibility — works seamlessly with PS5 and Xbox via HDMI 2.1, with users praising the remote for daily TV-style use

Cons

  • Persistent DisplayPort blackout issue affects a significant portion of users — random 1-4 second black screens, especially under DSC; HDMI 2.1 is the widely recommended workaround but sacrifices G-Sync
  • Only 1-year burn-in warranty vs 3 years offered by LG, ASUS, and Gigabyte competitors — a meaningful risk gap at the $1000+ MSRP price point
  • Tizen OS is intrusive by default: game bar popups on every boot, mandatory Samsung account for some apps, no DDC/CI support — requires service remote hacks ($8 online) to suppress unwanted features
  • Firmware updates are rare, lack changelogs, and Samsung customer support is widely criticized as unresponsive to known bugs like the DP blackout issue
  • No DP 2.1 (only DP 1.4 + HDMI 2.1) means 4K 240Hz always requires DSC compression; competing monitors like MSI MPG 322URX offer DP 2.1 for uncompressed signal
  • Color accuracy out of box is inconsistent — sRGB mode is undersaturated in Auto, oversaturated in Native; HDR tone mapping requires manual configuration or service menu intervention to reach true 1000-nit performance

The DP Blackout Problem Samsung Still Hasn't Fixed

Hundreds of owners report random black screens over DisplayPort that persist across firmware updates and cable swaps. Samsung support has no fix timeline, and many suspect it may be a hardware limitation. Switching to HDMI 2.1 resolves it for most — but that means giving up G-Sync.

The Only Matte QD-OLED — and That Actually Matters

Most 4K OLED monitors use glossy panels, which look stunning in dark rooms but struggle with reflections and show a purple tint at angles. The G80SD's semi-matte coating measurably reduces both issues, and RTINGS confirmed it produces better text clarity than its glossy rivals — making it the default recommendation for bright-room setups.

Owners Who Hate the Smart TV Love the Remote

The Tizen OS is a near-universal complaint, but the TV remote keeps coming up as an unexpected quality-of-life win. Console users especially appreciate controlling input, brightness, and power without fumbling for monitor buttons. The built-in apps also deliver 4K HDR streams that Windows simply can't — a genuine niche advantage most buyers don't anticipate.

Of course, all these 4k QD-OLEDs that have come out this year are fantastic options. You really can't go wrong with any of them, and choosing one over the other really comes down to small details. We take price and availability in the US into consideration, and right now, the ASUS PG32UCDM is one of the more expensive QD-OLEDs available. Sure, it has advantages like the Dolby Vision and KVM switch, but those advantages are very niche for a gaming monitor.

Takeaways: Matte coating is doing a great job at mitigating the QD OLED's dreaded purple tint. Text quality is surprisingly better than competitors. Color accuracy sucks, which kind of makes sense given Samsung's track record of pumping saturation on everything.

It's really odd, but the matte coating actually reduces the fringing around text that's usually caused by the triangular subpixel structure. We did a full comparison in the lab between this and the ASUS PG32UCDM and the Gigabyte FO32U2P and it was noticeably better.

Great deal for a 32" 4K QD-OLED! Just know Samsung's monitors have a semi-matte coating instead of semi-glossy coating like most other QD-OLED monitors if that matters to you.

The thing is, all of these OLED monitors are fantastic and the differences between them are marginal at best. Some folks gotta stop regurgitating claims without actually owning any OLED monitors.

I got this open box from BB in March for around $650 and it's absolutely fantastic coming from a 1440p/165Hz IPS. I use it with both my RTX 4080 PC and my PS5 Pro. I will say that managing HDR in Windows is an absolute pain in the ass, but once you get everything setup it looks gorgeous. Sadly, I got a stuck red pixel a few weeks ago but luckily I got the BB Geek Squad warranty. My only complaint aside from that is that Tizen OS sucks donkey balls.

There is a reason why G80SD is superior to every 3rd gen monitor. The best over engineered Vapor chamber cooling which covers entire back of panel. Graphene sheet layer cooling is added as well. This helps reduce the chance of burn in and ABL due to qd-oled being heat sensitive. The best coating — best of both worlds, reduces fringing to allow use in bright room with 250nits SDR.

I enjoy mine. Just didn't expect this to be a TV with built-in OS and apps. I was expecting just a monitor. Had some issues routing my speakers and external amp/dac but it's been fine now.

I tried out the G80SD for a couple days before getting the MSI 32URX. The G80SD immediately was a major wow from day 1. Really impressed with it, didn't really find the matte to be intrusive in any way and the colors were so good! Then trying the MSI 32URX though, the vibrancy was just greater and I knew I couldn't pick G80SD over the glossy.

I'm glad to have it confirmed that the matte coating reduces the purple tint from lack of polarization. That alone is enough to sell me on this display.

Mine still blacks out randomly, so no. It's not a solid choice.

I picked this one up a few months ago, it's surprising how intrusive the Smart TV features are. A 'service remote replacement' is ~$8 online, you can access the hidden menus and remove the popups.

I just worry about Samsung QC and RMA process. People across Samsung's offerings seem to poop on longevity and reliability. RTings can't quite test that aspect. No one can, at least not for another year or two when warranties are due to run out, but that's what keeps me away from Samsung products.

The Tizen OS is gimmicky af. I guess it's fine having access to YouTube etc while your PC is off, and the implementation is fine, but I'd kinda prefer the monitor to just be a monitor. It feels more like a monitor TV hybrid due to the wanky OS. I really wish it had Optical/Line Out. ARC is usually fine, but can be temperamental.

I have this monitor as well. You can't watch 4K HDR on a PC monitor unless you use a streaming stick or a game console because they don't allow it in the browser. Therefore I appreciate having a decent TV OS built into the monitor that I can use if I want to.

I just got this monitor two weeks ago from the MC sale that I price matched to bestbuy. It looks incredible, I game in a well lit room with blackout curtains and it's gorgeous. It's my first OLED 4k and I'm happy. This does come with only 1 year of burn in protection tho iirc unlike the other brands that tend to have 3.

I really think it's a great panel. That's it. The annoying blackouts in DP is ridiculous. I paid a premium price for this and the support is horrendous. I have spoken to the Scandinavian support several times. They have absolutely no clue when the blackout issue is being looked at.

To anyone thinking of getting this monitor it's really nice. I bought this last July for my ps5 and I have no regrets. If I ever decide to switch to a gaming pc I'm glad to know I already have this for better graphics, fps, etc. I travel for work and the 32 inch is the perfect size for me to play and watch tv, having the smart tv functions is a big plus. I've had this for over a year at this point and haven't had a single issue as far as burn in.

I found it weird that they specifically gave it a higher rating because it has the built-in Smart TV feature — which seems to me like an active detriment for a gaming monitor.

I've had mine for almost three weeks as well. As someone who has had to return OLEDs in the past I can easily say this is by far the best of them and probably the best QD-OLED available. The coating is fantastic. Content looks glazed onto the screen like it was porcelain. I've used a lot of these monitors from different brands and always found the panels in the Samsung units to be the best.

I find the built-in OS and apps unnecessary. They bring in some nice features but it's not really for me. That said, damn that remote is handy. I thought it would be useless and this seems like a very small thing but it's a big quality of life change to be able to use the remote to turn on/off the monitor every day.

Sadly beside every issue g80sd has, its the only monitor that can do tv level hdr 1000 via service mod. And no dynamic boost from asus or overbrightening from gigabyte even close.

Been running the G80SD since launch. I still have a love-hate relationship with it. Specs wise it's everything you need minus DP 2.1. But software wise this is a TV first and a monitor second. Game mode (required for 240hz) has an entirely separate set of settings that aren't one-to-one for the regular mode. You need to make different profiles for SDR and HDR content and flip between them in the menu.

In december the monitor was already 6 months or so at the market and that DP blackout issue was long known. Samsung had way then enough time to fix it, but they didn't. Some say that it could be a hardware issue and is not fixable by firmware alone. HDMI works well for me so I can totally ignore this problem, but their behavior is a big reason why this is my last Samsung monitor.

The blackout issue is why I returned mine. 2 to 3 times a day is insane and uncalled for.

I also would not get a Samsung monitor anymore. The firmware is so bugged all the time. Unfortunately they are the only ones with the anti glare coating.

I honestly love the smart tv option, yeah main purpose of this product is to be used with a pc but sometimes I just wanna watch something and I ignore the pc and watch it directly from integrated apps. Coating is just perfect, yes glossy panels look better can't argue with that but if you want a matte coating that's just the best coating I have seen so far. I agree with the rest but I would suggest this monitor.

Nah its definitely a DP issue. Had the issue on my 4080s, upgraded to 5090 same issue, with multiple DP cables. Finally tried out HDMI and it stopped.

It is a solid 4k OLED monitor, just like any other 4k options out there. I had no blackout issue on HDMI with 4080s so I guess it is YMMV. If you think you will enjoy smart monitor features this could possibly be worth the premium to you, otherwise get whatever is cheapest.

Had mine since launch and I love it. I use the smart TV features a lot so it's a godsend for me. I had blackouts when I first got it, but I am not sure if it's because I switched to HDMI — not had any since the switch.

The display port issue is either Nvidia or your cable. I have been running DP with an 7900xtx for a while and I don't experience blackouts at all. Great monitor, coating is nice.

Hello, I experienced no issues with the monitor. The only thing that happens sometimes (a software glitch), is when you do a manual panel refresh, it sometimes cuts the display area off by couple of inches, which is resolved by turning off and on the monitor. I won't be moving to a different monitor since it ticks all the boxes for me. 9.5/10, due to that software glitch.

I have one. My only problem with it is that it goes dark for about 4 seconds randomly, every now and then. Sometimes in an hour, sometimes in 2, can't tell. If you are an online gamer like me and it happens during the fight, you are dead for sure.

Great panel, awesome to look at. Light matte is very helpful to people with eyes sensitive to blue light and get eye strain with QD-OLEDs. Firmware is terrible. Worst VRR flicker I've seen, regular DSC drop outs and still has the can't wake from deep sleep issue that's plagued Samsung monitors for a couple of years. If you get one don't do it from Samsung, they stonewall you on returns and warranty issues. Worst service ever.

It's the only QD-OLED that isn't glossy. If that is what you want then it's a good choice. If you want glossy or W-OLED, go elsewhere.

Awesome review, much of which aligns with my experience with daily use on my G80SD! Best of both worlds — streaming content directly from the monitor, or gaming (Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 for me). As an additional element, to anyone who uses Philips Hue ecosystem, it has Hue Sync technology built-in via Hue Sync App; no need for the separate and expensive Hue Sync Box.
