Summary

The ViewSonic ELITE XG321UG is a 32-inch 4K 144Hz Mini LED IPS monitor with G-Sync Ultimate certification and VESA DisplayHDR 1400, originally priced around $2,499–$3,000 at launch but now frequently found used or on discount for $400–$1,100. Reddit sentiment is genuinely positive among owners who got it at a reasonable price, with many praising its exceptional HDR performance and Mini LED backlight tuning as some of the best in class for a non-OLED display. However, the monitor carries significant baggage: it's a first-gen Mini LED product that lacks HDMI 2.1, tops out at 144Hz, and has IPS-typical blooming under local dimming on the desktop. It's best suited for enthusiasts who prioritize stunning HDR brightness and color accuracy over connectivity standards and response time — especially content creators and HDR media consumers who can find one secondhand.

Pros

  • Exceptional HDR performance with VESA DisplayHDR 1400 certification and 1,000+ local dimming zones — owners call it genuinely class-leading Mini LED HDR, comparable to the Asus PG32UQX
  • Excellent out-of-the-box SDR color accuracy: measured dE 0.66 in sRGB gamma mode, making it a strong pick for photo and video editing work
  • 530 nit peak SDR brightness with stable 1200:1 contrast throughout the brightness range — solid for a bright or mixed-light room
  • Passively cooled G-Sync module (no fan noise), which matters for a monitor designed for long productivity and media sessions
  • ViewSonic has a strong historical reputation for backlight tuning and G-Sync implementation, and BlurBusters has endorsed the brand for this reason
  • Strong value on the used market — owners report picking it up for £410–$670, making the HDR performance accessible at a fraction of original MSRP

Cons

  • No HDMI 2.1 — only HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, which locks out 4K 120Hz console gaming and limits high-bandwidth connectivity options
  • 144Hz ceiling feels dated compared to newer 4K monitors offering 160Hz+ and DP 2.1 or HDMI 2.1
  • Local dimming is widely considered unusable for desktop use — blooming on high-contrast UI elements like white text on dark backgrounds is a consistent complaint
  • Slow pixel response time relative to fast IPS panels; some users notice cursor and motion latency, particularly in menus, making it a questionable pick for competitive gaming
  • First-gen G-Sync module reportedly has HDR compatibility issues in Windows 11 for some users
  • Out of production with no manufacturer warranty for new buyers — availability is limited to used or old stock, with no clear upgrade path from ViewSonic

Incredible HDR, Miserable Desktop Dimming

Owners consistently report that local dimming transforms HDR content but becomes a liability for everyday desktop use — white UI elements look muddy and grey when it's on. Most end up leaving it off for anything outside of media playback.

A $2,500 Monitor That's Now Worth Hunting Used

At launch it was hard to justify over similarly-priced OLED alternatives. At £410–$670 secondhand, the calculus flips entirely. Reddit's consensus is that the XG321UG is a bargain once the original price tag is removed from the equation.

The Connectivity Sacrifice No One Warned You About

The G-Sync Ultimate module physically prevents HDMI 2.1 support, meaning console gamers and anyone wanting future-proof bandwidth are out of luck. It's a niche monitor for a niche buyer — PC-first, HDR-obsessed, and not plugging in a PS5.

Wasn't that long ago that Viewsonic were almost universally better than other brands in OOTB calibration and overdrive tuning for gaming monitors. They seem to have fallen off in popularity but they are still the de-facto official brand of blurbusters fwiw.

$3000 and even worse performance because it's Viewsonic

The 27" 1440P 300Hz monitor with true 1000 nit HDR and Mini-LED is exactly what I want in a monitor. I don't like 4K because it's too demanding even for my RTX 3080, 1440P is just right. The monitor industry has been stagnant for far too long.

This display is insane, if you can find one for a reasonable price (I got mine for £410) get it, you won't regret it.

If it's priced $1k, I'd seriously consider buying it. I was a fan of OLED, believe me. But once I saw side by side comparison of brightness and colour accuracy between OLED and miniLEDs, I was converted. Now I can't find OLED to be as appealing as everyone made it sound.

Was wondering why i didnt stumble upon this specimen yet, sadly "only" 144Hz.

It's almost always the source material being pretty low quality. What color depth is your monitor set to in the graphics card control panel?

I'd prefer cheaper without a gsync module.

I'd never buy a glossy monitor...or an OLED. Productivity work isn't friendly on either which is the whole point of buying a monitor instead of a TV.

I'm really hoping TCL & Xiaomi start selling their Mini-LED monitors in more regions, it really feels like the Mini-LED monitor market is just held back because it's harder to advertise them compared to OLED monitors.

That model seems to be coming out around Q3. Next gen GPUs might come around then as well and they may bring a significant performance uplift with the new process nodes. So could be an option to move to 4k then.

Nice that you found a monitor you are very satisfied with! Problem for me is it has all the same downsides as the PG32UQX: no HDMI 2.1, only 144Hz and slow response time which pretty much rule it out entirely for my use case.

Incredible review, though I am intensely curious at where you managed to find it for such a good price. Was it second hand?

According to ViewSonic spec, XG321UG only support 10 bit. Even Windows is sending 12bit signal to the monitor. If the content itself is not, that doesn't help.

There's no point in this monitor if it doesn't have 2.1. The Asus PG32UQX is basically the same but has 2.1.

I've been keeping an eye on the 2nd market for these displays for a bit now, in the UK there is a PG32UQX for £800ish and dropping and then I found this on CEX, drove 5 hours round trip and now it's mine.

This is not like the PG32UQX. It's local dimming behavior sucks in comparison.

I've found gaming on this to be perfectly fine and I've exclusively gamed on an OLED for the last 6 years.

I've been using the AOC Q27g3xmn for a few days now and I'm coming to the same conclusion. Local Dimming not useful for desktop task. When local dimming is turned on white text turns muddled grey and looks horrible and things just overall look darker.

Not a typo, on the viewsonic website it also says HDMI 2.0... outrageous for a monitor that will be $1.5k+

Consumer grade OLED isn't bright enough for HDR. Best HDR performers are mini leds.

There's already a listing for the ELITE XG321UG. $3,699.00 AUD or $2,656.77 USD. This is more or less the same price as a G1 65".

The calibration out of the box wasn't great but after borrowing a display calibrator it was much better. Monitor looks clean af.

I think the market stagnated because OLED and Mini-LED were on the horizon but not ready for prime-time monitor usage. Going big on IPS wasn't cost efficient because people wouldn't pay the costs for that extra percentage when it was still an inferior technology.

I bought it for $670 on Amazon sale, everything good, but it's an almost 4 years old model. No DP 2.0, and it's certainly not for actual gaming, but more a TV substitute, and for watching HDR content. The cursor latency is very visible, so likely not for gaming.

Thanks for the review. 410 is insane. I actually see the slow response time on my mini-led even in some game menus, it's barely 120hz capable imho, but the tradeoff for brightness and color's worth it.

But at least this doesn't have flicker like most OLEDs. That's another big plus!

I think the BenQ EX321UX is actually the MiniLED HDR king for 4K. It's extremely bright and sustains that brightness, plus you get HDMI 2.1 and DP 2.1. Response time is great, too. It's much better suitable for a mix of productivity, PC gaming, and console gaming with VRR support.

My viewsonic tends to clip high brightness colors in mode 1, less so in mode 2 and completely fixed in mode 3 (but this last mode has the worst blooming).

I saw the XG321UG (4K 32") is supposed to be $2500. Still a little too much for me personally, but I'm eager to see how these mini led displays perform.

It's disappointing, especially for the cost. They should have updated it with HDMI 2.1 and DP 2.1 for that price! It also has a physical fan inside for the gsync module. Again, not worth it IMO!

I've noticed similar issues on my cooler master tempest gp27u as well. I thought it was just the monitor but it seems related to local dimming — things look more noticeable when the monitor is brighter.

XG321UG and Acer X32 use same panel as PG32UQX so don't expect miracles.
