Summary

The iPhone 17e is Apple's 2026 entry-level iPhone, released at $599 with an A19 chip, MagSafe, C1X modem, and 256GB base storage — the same price as the 16e but with meaningful upgrades. Reddit sentiment is broadly positive, with most users agreeing it's the best value iPhone Apple has made to date. The phone is widely seen as ideal for parents, kids, corporate fleets, and anyone upgrading from an aging iPhone (11 through 13 Mini era). The two consistent criticisms are the 60Hz display and the single-camera setup, though most commenters argue these are non-issues for the target audience. A notable thread sparked debate about whether the 17e's 48MP sensor is genuinely comparable to the base 17's — the consensus being that the 17e uses a smaller sensor that shows gaps primarily in low light.

Pros

  • 256GB base storage at the same $599 price as the 16e — widely praised as a meaningful upgrade that matches what flagship models start with
  • MagSafe finally added after its absence on the 16e was a frequent dealbreaker; iFixit teardown revealed the 17e back panel is even compatible with 16e, allowing 16e owners to add the magnets via a part swap
  • A19 chip with C1X modem delivers strong real-world performance and battery life; users upgrading from iPhone 12/13 era report a dramatic improvement, with some describing it as the best iPhone battery they've ever owned
  • Ceramic Shield 2 and durability upgrades make it a practical long-term device, with Apple historically supporting 'e' models for many years of iOS updates
  • Compelling carrier deals at launch — multiple users in r/NoContract reported getting the 17e for as low as $240–$350 through port-in promos at Metro and Cricket
  • iFixit gave it high repairability marks, consistent with EU regulatory pressure pushing Apple toward more repairable designs

Cons

  • 60Hz display in 2026 is the most cited spec complaint — budget Android phones under $300 have offered 90–120Hz for years, and even the base iPhone 17 includes ProMotion; Apple appears to be deliberately gatekeeping this feature
  • Single rear camera with a smaller 1/2.55" sensor is a real limitation for low-light photography; users switching from a 14 Pro Max or 15 Pro reported regretting the camera downgrade, and moving subjects at night are described as a weak point
  • No UWB chip means no precision AirTag/AirPods finding — an increasingly relevant omission as Apple's accessory ecosystem grows
  • No Dynamic Island — the notch is back for another year, which surprised even fans of the phone who had expected the upgrade
  • The $200 gap to the base iPhone 17 is real, but the 17 adds ProMotion, Dynamic Island, dual cameras, and a larger sensor — Reddit's recurring joke is that the pricing ladder always 'gets' you
  • No ultrawide lens is a hard stop for users who rely on the 0.5x view; for those users, even the iPhone 13 (which has ultrawide) is a better fit

Is the 17e Finally the iPhone for Everyone Who Isn't a Camera Nerd?

Reddit's verdict is yes — if photos aren't your main thing. The 17e handles texts, social media, calls, and casual snapshots without a hitch. But users who rely on ultrawide, low-light shots, or zoom came away disappointed and recommend the base 17 or even a used 15 Pro instead.

Apple's Budget iPhone Is Now a Corporate Staple — And That's the Point

Multiple threads confirmed what many suspected: the 17e's primary market is enterprise. Companies buying phones for non-executive staff, parents buying first phones for kids, and IT departments stocking iOS devices for field workers all see it as the obvious pick. At $599 with carrier subsidies often cutting the price in half, the value proposition for bulk buyers is strong.

The 16e Upgrade You Can Skip If You're Already Waiting

Owners of the 16e are largely unmoved by the 17e. The MagSafe back panel swap compatibility discovered by iFixit means 16e users can add the magnets without buying a new phone. Commenters note the A19 and C1X are nice bumps, but if you bought the 16e at launch, Reddit's consensus is to sit tight.

"Stuck at 60Hz" People who buy this phone won't give a rip about something like that. I'm even amazed Dynamic Island is coming to it tbh. Everybody's Dad - "I just want a basic phone that works. My kids make fun of me being a 'green bubble person' whatever the f- that means. Oh this one's cheap I'll take that."

This is an absurdly solid phone for the price, every boomer with some dogshit Samsung phone that frustrates their family because nobody knows how it works needs one of these ASAP.

Thank god they brought MagSafe to this thing, that was always a weird decision in my view because it is really part of the ecosystem imo. Also good for the base storage bump. 60hz is meh, but ok. I'm surprised they kept the notch though! I honestly don't mind the notch but yeah, surprised it stuck around another year. BUT I'd never get this phone. 17 is way better for not muuuch more.

Hell that's even most of the standard iPhone buyers, it's 100% of the e demographic [who don't care about frame rate].

Just waiting for the comments to be awash with people complaining about a phone they would never buy, moaning about features it has or doesn't has despite it not being a phone marketed towards them.

I feel like if you're the person buying the budget iPhone, you're not the person bothered about using your phone like a tricorder to hunt for accessories.

Notably: They re added MagSafe after it was missing from 16e. That's nice. Arguably that was one of the reasons I passed when I desperately needed to replace my broken phone last year.

Sensors are different indeed but tbf photo/videos on main sensor at 1x are extremely similar between base 17 and 17 pro. I suspect the difference is more noticeable between 17e and 17 but we will see!

it's always that way: product v.1 - missing this missing that. product v.2 - better this, still missing that. ... product v.eventually - this is the product they should've made from the start.

Most people do not care, they just want a point and shoot that gets the job done in most scenarios or circumstances, and pretty much any iPhone since 2019 can make that happen.

Idk about 'crucial', I doubt the majority of iPhone users are even aware of this feature [UWB].

Apple hardware keeps getting better and better in each category but particularly the entry/mid range is becoming so attractive! The e, the neo, the air models…

My wife has been hanging on for dear life to her 13 mini. Was showing her the 17e and she didn't care about anything except battery life and device size. She ignored the 16e because it's too big but at this stage the mini is really beyond retirement, so she'll probably get this.

Yes I'm aware and a lot of people don't even know they have completely different focal lengths. The 17 Pro has a 24mm lens and the Air and the standard 17 have a 26mm lens.

MagSafe. Good chip. Type C. Call it a day. I'm still using a 13 Mini at this point, if some of the stuff I'm seeing about the 17e is true, this might be a good successor to the Mini series. This might finally be the ticket. I couldn't give 2/5 of a shit about 120hz.

The only thing truly wrong about the e-series isn't 60 Hz or MagSafe (which 17e will be getting). It's that it's $100 too expensive.

This phone is going to do super well. The 60hz isn't the best but for anyone coming from an older iPhone or Android phone without a higher refresh rate it won't be a problem. Has to be a few trade offs somewhere.

I've tested out a bunch of the cameras. The 15 base model is where parity was reached between the base and the Pro's main cameras. 16 and 17 base have the exact same main camera as the 15 base. The 16 and 17 Pro have gotten some upgrades to their main camera but they have been minor.

You can't just chose one spec that this phone is missing and compare it others. Sure, there are cheaper Android phones with 120Hz screens, but do they have a chip as powerful as the A19? Will they be supported for as long? Do they give you iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Watch, AirTag support? Apple Support?

There's no reason to get the 17e when the 17 is as good as it is and the price gap is so small. This was the case last year too, but the gap has closed even further.

This is what the 16e should have been, but couldn't have been because they needed to justify the 17e existing. That being said, this actually seems like a pretty good deal now for someone looking for a 'cheap' iPhone.

Everything about it is great except the display brightness stuck on iPhone 13 levels in 2026.

They upped the storage capacity, added MagSafe and didn't raise the price. I mean if you're looking for a budget one you could do worse I guess.

16e is an actual banger in terms of price value. If the 17e is also a fair deal I might grab one because I am still using my 12 mini currently.

I tried the Air and mostly liked it but eventually returned it for a 17 PM in part due to the camera. I knew it was different when I got the Air but thought I wouldn't mind the compromise but ended up missing the pro camera and returned it.

Just iOS itself is a good reason to buy one (saying that after having android all my life and got my first iPhone -16e- last year).

As someone who bought an iPhone 16e, love the screen, love the battery that lasts me days. Don't give a shit about 120fps screens. I mean, that's why it's cheaper.

For $600, I think the 17e is worth getting now considering the upgrades they gave it. Gives a run on Google money to have those who use Pixel A models to switch to the e series. Considering it's $100 more but for that extra $100 you're getting double the storage plus better hardware and software that'll surpass the 5-7 years of updates.

All it needed to be good was 120Hz and the same main cam as the 17. As it stands, 1/2.55" main sensor and 60Hz display in 2026 is unacceptable. Even $250 phones have had better displays and cameras for a few years now. Instead of this, you're much better off picking up a used 16 Pro.

Last year, when I decided to upgrade my 13 mini, I went through several models: 16e -> 15 -> 15 Pro. Regarding the 16e, it takes good photos but it's for casual use. Photos of moving subjects and at night are a disaster with the 16e.

Love my 16e a lot. Got a magsafe compatible case for it, and the battery lasts forever. C1 has been extremely impressive to me, especially for poorer signal situations. I hope Apple continues to offer 'e' models every generation.
