Summary

The Samsung Galaxy A26 5G is a budget-to-mid-range phone that Reddit largely defends as a solid daily driver — especially for light users who just need social media, YouTube, and casual gaming. Sentiment is mixed but leaning positive when users judge it against its actual price point rather than flagships. The phone runs on the Exynos 1380, ships with Android 15 and One UI 7, and Samsung's promise of 6 major OS upgrades is the most consistently praised selling point across threads. However, Reddit's more technical crowd points out real limitations: a dim display at only 800 nits, mono speaker, no headphone jack, and storage performance that lags behind similarly priced competitors. The consensus is that this phone is exactly right for budget-conscious buyers who don't game heavily, but a tough sell for anyone who can stretch their budget to the A36 or A56.

Pros

  • 6 major OS upgrades promised — repeatedly cited as the standout reason to pick this over rivals like the A35 (4 updates) and most Chinese competitors at the same price
  • Exynos 1380 delivers smooth day-to-day performance for social media, streaming, and light gaming; multiple owners report zero lag in everyday use
  • IP67 water resistance and a microSD slot (up to 2TB) are features usually stripped from phones at this price
  • Selfie camera quality is praised as one of the phone's strongest points, with OIS on the main rear camera adding value for casual photographers
  • 120Hz Super AMOLED display is a genuine step up for a sub-$300 device, even if peak brightness disappoints
  • At $199–$299 depending on the retailer, it hits a price point few Samsung phones have matched with this chip

Cons

  • Display peaks at around 800 nits — noticeably inferior to the A35's 1000 nits, making outdoor visibility a real problem in sunlight
  • Mono speaker is a baffling omission on a $300 phone; Reddit users specifically called out the CMF Phone's similar decision as a bad trend Samsung is following
  • No headphone jack and no charger in the box — both cuts that drew criticism across threads from users who expected better at this tier
  • UFS 3.1 storage technically sounds premium but real-world write speeds reportedly underperform; read speeds are acceptable but sequential write benchmarks disappoint
  • The water-drop notch design is openly mocked as a 2018-era holdover — even budget Motorola phones have moved to punch-hole cameras
  • Heating issues reported by some users when using mobile data alongside apps, and the virtual proximity sensor for call screen-off isn't as reliable as a physical one

Budget Buyers Love It, But Tech Reddit Has Problems

Non-technical owners across multiple threads consistently say the A26 handles everything they actually do — scrolling, YouTube, casual gaming. Tech-focused users counter with real benchmark data showing the UFS storage and mono speaker are meaningful steps backward from what the price should deliver.

Does 6 Years of Updates Justify the Trade-offs?

Samsung's software update commitment is the A26's most-discussed advantage — but Reddit is split on whether it's enough to offset weaker cameras, a dim display, and a dated notch design. Some argue you should spend more upfront on the A56 and hold it longer rather than settle for the A26's hardware compromises.

The Exynos 1380 Surprise: Better Than the A36?

An early Reddit debate emerged when leaked specs revealed the A26 uses the same Exynos 1380 chip as the A35, with benchmark scores nearly identical to the A36's Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 — leading users to question whether the $100 price gap between the two models is actually justified by real-world performance differences.

Objectively A36 will be a nicer phone with better cameras and a higher quality finish.

If this is true, doesn't this put Samsung in a precarious position where the Samsung Galaxy A26 is a better deal than the Samsung Galaxy A36? The performance difference between the two is not wide enough to warrant a $100 increase from the A26 to the A36.

Pros: bright 120 Hz AMOLED panel, sleek design, extensive features, 6 years of updates, good main camera with OIS, low waste heat, long battery life. Cons: few Bluetooth codecs, only WiFi 5, no eSIM support, PWM flickering, no power supply included, no wireless charging, no 3.5-mm headphone jack, mono speaker.

Samsung can never be king of budget segment. Those days are long gone. A26 will still have a notched design from 2018. The price at which A26 will come at has phones with snapdragon 8s gen 3 and dimensity 8400.

Pros: Clean, durable design with IP67 rating. Android 15, One UI 7 with 6 major OS upgrades promised. Excellent selfies. microSD card slot. Cons: The screen could have been brighter. Video stabilization is not great. Battery life is underwhelming. The virtual proximity sensor for turning off the screen during calls is not as good as a physical one. No stereo speakers. No charger in the box.

That's the point. They made it ugly so they can upsell you to their upper end model A36.

That A26 5G is fine for what you need honestly. Social apps, casual games, and photos will all run okay. Don't stress too much, you don't need a flagship for that.

"Exynos 1380 sporting device" and "King of budget segment" aren't supposed to be in the same sentence.

Exynos 1380, 6.7in 2340x1080 120hz AMOLED, 6/8GB RAM, 128/256GB storage, micro SD, 6yrs OS and security updates, 5000mAh, List $299. UFS 3.1 but very poor performance - write is poor like other Samsungs but also read too.

Let me give you some advice, don't watch tech reviews. Most reviewers will say it's shit unless it's an S25 Ultra or whatever else ~£2000 phone. Your phone is perfectly fine and fits your budget and that's all that matters.

YouTube always makes people doubt their choices. If it works for your daily life, then it's good enough.

Not really king of budget. Maybe in the US, sure. In other markets, that water drop notch alone is going to be a deal breaker for most.

Sounds like that phone does everything you need, and that's what really matters. Plus, Samsung gives it 6 years of updates, which is way more than other phones at that price point, and I think that's super important because then you can keep it longer and get more bang for your buck.

The A26 is a solid mid range device and should serve you a good number of years.

I bought the a26 on launch day as moving from crap Xiaomi. Couldn't give a flying f*ck about the notch, phone flies and is super responsive, yea screen could be brighter, but that's my only real complaint.

No reason to get it. Get the Galaxy A35. It's the best version of the Exynos 1380.

A series is good budget phones. Most of my fam have used them for yrs and they say it's reliable. If it starts heating up, crashing apps, or lagging, bring it back.

But a26 gives you 6 major OS upgrades, not like a35 only 4.

I have this phone also, and there's nothing wrong with display. For me only issue is lack of always on display feature, although it can be used via downloaded app. Other than that device is very fast and well worth the price!

I just bought the A26. I have the same issue about heating. I found out that the heating cause — I turned off ALL the vibration functions. There's a lot in the A26. Try it and tell me if it helps.

I just bought it for my mother, tbh it's a parents phone, I wouldn't buy it for myself. Maybe try to get a36 or a55, way better performance and quality. 6GB RAM isn't future proof, tell them it's better to get a55/a56 with 8GB and keep it for more years.

Society has forgotten that phones are just…phones. If you just need your phone to call, text, take photos and do some light gaming, you don't need a $1000 phone to do that. Don't let tech reviewers convince you otherwise and enjoy your purchase.

Pick whichever is cheaper, both are underpowered for One UI. My aunt has been using budget Samsung M series phones, she complains about lag and upgrades the phone every 2 years.

The A26 is not good if you want good cameras or good performance. The A56 is way better but you should keep your XR or search for something else.

I just got this phone and the only fault I've found is that you can't set individual apps to have their own notification sounds.

Got one for me and one for the wife. They were $199 each from Walmart. I don't understand why people are expecting a $200 phone to be some amazing device that is as good as a $1,000 iCrap phone. It's a cheap phone for those of us who just want a phone for calls, messages, and watching YouTube. You should know what you're getting when you buy a cheap phone.

I'm like you buddy got my a26 for 200+tax and I love it. It's fast, clean, and reliable. I use it for YouTube or scroll through the internet at work. And guess what I'm happy with just that.

I've had this A26 phone several weeks and I don't like it. Didn't know you could make taking a screenshot difficult but Samsung managed to do it on this phone. Also, to get the screen dark, I have only one little spot on one screen that I can tap to get it off.

Selfies are pretty good on the A26, it's probably its best feature. The A55 and A56 are noticeably better phones overall than the A26, but the A36 can feel slower in use than the A26.

It's a good phone for the price but the performance isn't the best. Expect lag when multitasking. Build quality, display quality and battery life are all excellent.

It should work just fine if you're not a heavy user who's looking for the top-of-the-line specs but if I were you, I would ask my parents for a refurbished flagship like the S23 which goes for the same price as a new A26. You get a better phone and it's better for the environment.

I use it. It's fine. It's a secondary phone but it's great at all the basics for its price. Unless you're a heavy gamer you shouldn't get any issues.

I've been using the A26 for about 10 months. Works fine. No issues. I use it for work and light gaming. Clash Royale, etc. Battery life is not awesome but it's okay. No lag or stuttering. Very smooth experience with all my apps.

The battery doesn't last very long. It's not a gaming phone, but I've played Delta Force on it without any lag. Some higher-graphics games are laggy. Camera is okay, nothing fancy either. Overall, it's a good general-purpose phone.

The A26 is perfectly suited to your needs. You don't need a top-of-the-line phone to scroll and watch videos and take some photos. It's a good device, and it was available for a price you could afford.

If you like brighter screen, the A35 wins. A26 only has 800 nits while A35 has 1000 nits. I wouldn't settle for 800 nits knowing how horrible 1000 nits already look under the sun.
