Summary

The Xiaomi 17 is a compact flagship that's genuinely won over a lot of Android enthusiasts, particularly those frustrated with Samsung's hardware compromises. Running on Snapdragon 8 Elite with a 7000mAh battery in a 6.3" form factor, it consistently tops battery drain tests against the Galaxy S26, Pixel 10, and iPhone 17. The sentiment across hundreds of Reddit comments is mostly positive on hardware — battery life and charging speed are universally praised — but HyperOS remains a recurring pain point, with users complaining about bugs, notification delays, and an iOS-copycat aesthetic. It's a phone people are excited to import even with the hassle, which says a lot about where the hardware stands.

Pros

  • 7000mAh battery in a 6.3" body — owners report 1.5 to 2 days on casual use, and it tops battery drain tests against the Galaxy S26, Pixel 10, and iPhone 17
  • 100W wired charging gets it from 20% to full in 40–50 minutes, and it supports standard PPS so third-party chargers work at full speed
  • Snapdragon 8 Elite delivers iPhone-level single-thread performance according to benchmarks, with less throttling than the Xiaomi 15
  • Strong point-and-shoot camera quality with Leica color profiles (Natural and Authentic) available for more realistic output
  • Competitive launch pricing with aggressive trade-in deals in EU — multiple users in France and the UK reported effective prices well below retail after bundles
  • Bootloader unlocking is still possible, making it viable for custom ROM users who want flagship hardware without HyperOS

Cons

  • HyperOS has real-world bugs: intermittent WhatsApp notifications, Spotify volume muting after track skips, and Firefox failing to keep pages in memory are documented by multiple users
  • The ultrawide camera is a notable step down — narrower field of view, no autofocus, and weaker quality compared to the main sensor and competitors like the Vivo X300
  • CPU throttles heavily under sustained load, reaching 50°C on the corners during stress tests — still better than the Xiaomi 15, but it's a known issue
  • Chinese ROM lacks Android Auto, eSIM, Google services, and contains Chinese-language UI strings even in English mode — global version partially addresses this but availability is limited
  • No UWB support, and US buyers are limited to T-Mobile bands with no mmWave — importing for Verizon is reportedly not fully achievable
  • HyperOS design language mimics iOS heavily, which is a dealbreaker for users who specifically want an Android experience that feels distinct

The Battery Is Real — But HyperOS Still Gets in the Way

Owners consistently validate the battery claims in real use, but notification bugs and app compatibility issues with WhatsApp, Spotify, and Firefox remind you this isn't a polished daily driver out of the box.

Best Hardware You Can't Easily Buy

Reddit's consensus is that the Xiaomi 17 punches above its price in hardware — but import fees, band limitations, and the absence of Google services in the CN ROM make it a project phone for most buyers outside Asia.

The Compact Flagship Debate Xiaomi Actually Won

In battery drain tests against the Galaxy S26, Pixel 10, and iPhone 17, the Xiaomi 17 leads the pack — making it the most compelling answer to years of complaints about small phones with small batteries.

The regular 17 looks dope. 7000mah battery in a 6.3" device.

Retail is 1500€ basically same as S26 Ultra but probably is better apart software support (5 major, 6 years of patch against full 7 years of Samsung) but hardware is miles better even if hyperOS isn't as good looking as older MIUI 10/11 but should be decent in flagship phone.

I just looked up what battery my phone has and the 17 honestly sounds amazing. I don't need the gimmicks, but that battery would actually be super useful to me.

Seems like it could be a bit of a downgrade camera wise? At 100mm and at 70/75mm it has a worse aperture than the 15 Ultra. Even the main camera has a slightly slower lens. Seems like a big gamble that Xiaomi did with this continuous zoom solution.

It also has fast charging with bog standard PPS, meaning any charger will let it work at full speed unlike most phones that limit to 27w with third party chargers.

While we don't have much info in the west yet, the chinese community is less than thrilled calling the 17 ultra a downgrade. Main complaints being downgraded macro capabilities and apparently a notable downgrade in the display itself. Another complaint from the enthusiasts seems to be the main sensor particularly in low light.

Launch deals are better than the Samsung IMO. £100 off, £200 enhanced trade in (I just traded in a broken iPhone 12 for £222) and a free tablet that I'll get at least £150 for on ebay. After everything I'll have paid £900 with a charger and pro photography kit.

The fake sensor on the right side really irks me. It's such an annoying by-product of this circular island design trend.

No Android Auto? Well that's an instant no from me. I rely on AA every day. It's so much better than my car's built-in infotainment.

Qc 8 Elite. 6.3in 2656x1220 120hz Amoled. 7000mah. Runs really hot under load - 50 degrees celsius on the corner, less throttling than the 15 tho. CPU perf is a bit below the reference phone but still, ST is iphone level as advertised.

If Xiaomi devices didn't try and clone iOS in the UI I would consider one of these for my next one. I have the Pad 7 Pro and I cannot stand how it tries to be iOS so much, other than that it's such a good device for the price.

TLDR: Pros: One of the few compact flagship phones, excellent build and design. Bright and smooth 120Hz, LTPO OLED display. Exceptional battery endurance for the class. Dependable cameras, upgraded selfie. Feature-rich HyperOS 3 with promised 5 years of major upgrades. Cons: Ultrawide camera is downgraded - poor quality, narrower FoV, still no AF. The telephoto camera could be at least 3x. CPU throttles heavily under load.

That CPU will throttle heavily on any phone. Best to put your phone to some power saving performance mode.

Got the Xiaomi 17 Base version CN Rom last month. Coming from pixel 8. It works fine and quite snappy, no slowdowns detected. Battery life (7000mah) - 1 charge last from 1.5 to 2 days as a casual user (social media, messaging apps, casual games). Charging speed - fast charging speed up to 100W, charges from 20 to 100% in 40 to 50 mins.

I remember when my Xiaomi phone had 4000 mah and it was a huge capacity at that time. Now 7000mah!

I'm using Xiaomi 15, my first Xiaomi phone. It's mind boggling how good it is. It's camera, fast processing, battery duration and a ton of features in their HyperOS. Snapdragon 8 Elite Octa-Core 4.32Mhz, 12gb Ram and 512gb storage. All for €799.

Personally I don't think the bloatware is an issue. It has its own app store like all Chinese phones and some Xiaomi apps, which is along the same lines as Samsung phones having Samsung apps. Reddit just seems to hate on HyperOS and Xiaomi. A lot of people retain opinions from years ago.

I've been having issues on HyperOS with certain apps losing compatibility and causing issues. Notifications from WhatsApp are broken for me, with messages coming through intermittently, and calls never coming through as notifications. Spotify also has an issue where the volume mutes about 70% of the time after skipping a song. Lastly, Firefox is unable to keep pages in memory for more than a second or two, forcing page refresh.

Life long Samsung fan boy here, S4 up to the S25 Ultra. For the last year or more I've used only Chinese import phones like Vivo and Oppo. If you really want a battery and camera upgrade then go Chinese. Blows anything else out of the water and it's worth dealing with the quirks. Battery life, charging and the camera are the three reasons to switch in my opinion, but a bit more setup and tweaking involved to get it more to what you're familiar with.

5 years of software support is excellent though. 7 years is more than most people need so it's not really a major problem.

Too bad Xiaomi forces you to use their video player and then shows you ads after the video ends (with no real way to disable permanently). Not to mention ads in their other apps. Oh and their over aggressive battery management which causes all sorts of problems. And years long bugs and issues with western apps. It's the last Xiaomi phone I'll ever buy.

If you tinker with it then the final result is amazing, no ads at all. Plus Xiaomi are one of very few that still allow bootloader unlocking so you are not bound to HyperOS anyway.

I currently have a xiaomi 15 ultra and have been using it since launch. I have not seen any bloatware when I first got it, and after disabling the ads I'm not even seeing any ads on the phone. I think the bloatware is only for the budget line phones.

It's priced too high in Australia. Comparing launch day offers, the price of the base X17 256/512gb is the same price as S26 ultra 256gb. It's not even worth considering at that price point.

Is there any phone since SD 888 that doesn't throttle... So hard to find a decent phone nowadays.

I really like it, the hardware seems quite a bit better than Samsung in all the ways I care about. The software is definitely less polished though. I use a launcher, but I lost circle-to-search because Xiaomi doesn't support it in non-stock launchers. Also using Xiaomi in the US limits you to T-Mobile.

The phone is really good. I am very happy coming to it after Samsung S22. Thank you Samsung for pushing me towards buying premium from Xiaomi and I don't regret it one bit.

Got the base one. I love the night photography but not so much for the daylight. I'm having second thoughts about this phone, I feel like I can get a better phone with the price. Other than that, I think it's a good phone overall. Though I am curious about its battery capacity after 2 years at least.

I bought Xiaomi 17 Pro Max from China. HyperOS3 feels like some demo. There's a lots of small tiny things that reminds you that under the hood lays a heavy dated Xiaomi bloated ROM. Compared to OneUI 8.0 which is the most complete UI of all Android.

Chinese will be there in some random setting menu even if the language is set to English. No core android system (android auto, wearos, gms, ok Google, quickshare). Trash apps, a lot but 90% of them can be uninstalled with ease or via adb. Have to turn off a lot of recommendations in various menus to not get Chinese suggestions.

Design wise it's truly not remarkable however in its category (i.e compact flagship with 6.3" screen or smaller) it has the best specs, miles better than a base Galaxy S variant for example. And price wise, their launch offer is crazy with a huge trade in bonus and a 100€ coupon here in France. I can get one for 450€ by trading my base S23, even Samsung can't match that.

I got myself one. Here are 2-day comments after being a long time Samsung Galaxy Ultra user. Dialer APP doesn't use the integrated contacts pictures. T9 Keyboard doesn't let you search accented characters.

It seems that some photos taken with the main sensor are subject to the oil painting effect syndrome when zoomed in (grass, stone texture, etc.).

I personally know a few people who bought it from China and they were iPhone users, not anymore. They fell in love with this beast. They are huge gamers so Genshin, Delta Emulator, and Marvel Snap runs butter smooth, 120hz for 5+ hours. This phone is hard to kill!

Cool phone. Not cool built in ads. So far I have touched note 10 pro and 13T and both are fucking annoying with ads built in proprietary apps like settings, file manager, security and so on. Totally worthy phone if not built in ads.
