Summary

The Hisense CanvasTV 2024 has earned a strong reception among art TV buyers looking for a credible alternative to the Samsung Frame, with many users describing themselves as genuinely blown away by how it performs as a lifestyle display. It runs Google TV, includes a teak frame in the box, and mounts flush to the wall without requiring an external connect box — all for significantly less than the Frame. The audience here is clearly someone who wants a living room centerpiece that works as art first and TV second, and the Canvas delivers that without a subscription. Durability concerns surface occasionally, as Hisense's general reputation for QA/QC follows the brand, and a handful of users reported hardware failures. That said, the overwhelming majority of Canvas owners in these threads are satisfied and many are repeat buyers.

Pros

  • No monthly art subscription required — hundreds of pre-loaded artworks included with more appearing automatically, plus easy uploads via USB or the mobile app
  • Flush wall mount included in the box, along with a teak decorative frame that alone would cost $250+ separately on a Samsung Frame
  • Runs Google TV, which users consistently prefer over Samsung's Tizen OS — supports sideloading APKs and integrates with Google accounts and profiles
  • Dolby Vision support is a feature Samsung Frame skips entirely, giving the Canvas a real HDR advantage during TV viewing
  • Presence/motion sensor works to auto-dim and turn off when no one is in the room, and brightness adjusts based on ambient light
  • Price is substantially lower than the Samsung Frame — the 55" has sold as low as $699 and the 65" around $899-$1,299, making it accessible for a premium lifestyle TV

Cons

  • No OneConnect box means all HDMI cables, power, and peripherals must plug directly into the back — a real hassle for clean wall installations compared to the Frame's single thin cable
  • The power cord is thick and standard, which can prevent the TV from sitting fully flush against the wall even with a recessed outlet; users had to source low-profile replacement cords
  • Art mode automation has quirks — when connected devices like Apple TV power off via CEC, the TV can shut off completely instead of transitioning to art mode, a behavior Samsung handles more gracefully
  • Motion sensor to wake the TV back into art mode is buggy for some users; the TV goes dark but doesn't reliably turn back on when someone enters the room without manual intervention
  • Hisense's brand-wide reputation for inconsistent QA/QC carries over — isolated reports of green vertical lines and panel failures, with the company historically receiving poor marks for build consistency
  • Google Photos cannot feed art mode directly; users must upload images manually via USB or the web interface, and uploaded art cannot be organized into separate folders within the app

The Art Mode Wake Bug That's Making People Return It

Multiple users discovered that while the motion sensor reliably puts the Canvas to sleep, it often fails to wake it back up when someone enters the room. A few returned their TVs thinking the sensor was broken — until a workaround surfaced involving a specific settings sequence. Hisense has yet to fully patch this in a software update.

Samsung Gets Its First Real Competitor in the Art TV Market

Users who own both say the Canvas holds up surprisingly well against the Frame in picture quality, and the included teak frame plus no subscription fees make the value case hard to argue with. Several former Frame owners say they're switching — and not looking back.

Artists Are Buying This TV to Sell Their Art With It

At least one professional artist in these threads bought the Canvas specifically to display and sell original work to collectors, loading it with their portfolio before handing it off. The easy USB art upload and matte display make it a niche but legitimate gallery tool that no one saw coming.

My biggest complaint with my Frame is the auto brightness adjustment. The art is invariably way too bright or way too dim because the TV fails to adjust to the ambient light in the room.

No external box is a mistake IMO. You're either going to have to run a ton of cables for things like set top boxes and game consoles through the wall, or leave them hanging and ruin the experience.

I agree, I think the OneConnect box is one of the best features/benefits of the Frame TV

I am SO glad that Samsung finally has some competition and hope it encourages them to keep refining the Frame. I have seen many very vocal critics online complain that while their products work well out of the box, they are very prone to breaking shortly after the warranty expires.

I'm mostly interested in how 'real' it looks in a well lit room. How the quality of it as a TV is. And how you're handling cables without a one connect box. Would you just put electric bulkheads in and route power and HDMI wires through the wall?

I think this is the first significant competitor [to the Samsung Frame].

The included bezel is not a pro for everyone. My home is primarily blacks, whites, and greys making the base Samsung Frame perfect for me because it's also black. The Canvas TV does not look like a Frame unless you use that included teak bezel. This would not work for me.

It can't be more buggy than the frame. You probably made a good decision.

Saying I'm pleased with this TV would be an understatement. I actually love the matte finish on the screen and the way the shows appear on screen during the day time. I don't notice a difference at all during nighttime viewing compared to my Samsung edge lit.

One big thing I noticed with the Hisense. It has Dolby Vision. I had that on my old Oled. Samsung decided not to have that on their TVs. I think it looks pretty decent on the Hisense.

If you turn off a device hooked up such as an Apple TV, it turns off the whole TV. When I had a Frame, it would go to Art Mode when I turned it off. It seems like this is a manual step to turn it on. Still playing around though.

I have a Samsung Frame in the living room and was going to put one on our new kitchen eating area. Saw the Hisense announcement and ran to bestbuy and grabbed the only 55 they had. Equal if not better than the Samsung as far as picture quality. Blacks are deeper.

It was worth the risk plus probably $750 cheaper than the frame tv. It comes with the teak frame which we would have had to purchase and was already cheaper than the frame by a good amount.

I've had 3 decently expensive Hisense TVs and have had very good reliability out of them. I actually prefer them over other brands in the $1000-1300 price point. All 3 TVs are still running without issue.

I have the 120inch UST Hisense, I was concerned about buying it but I replaced my Sony 4K $5,000 project with it and it pains to say the Hisense looks better. I will say there Google TV's have horrible stutter problems, both of ours do, but we use Roku's with them so we don't notice it.

I originally picked up a 2024 Samsung Frame but ended up selling it (for a profit) after I found out this was releasing. For someone that does not need to connect anything additional to the TV and actually enjoys the Google OS, this is a great option.

I bought it a few weeks ago. Very happy so far. Mount is included. It sits FLAT on the wall. The sensor is great. It turns it off at night or when no one is there and it lowers the brightness when someone is there. Picture is excellent.

144Hz display, so slightly faster than Frame with 120Hz. What made me chuckle is that as Frame it has only completely obsolete USB 2.0. I mean it should be against the law to use that old USB spec.

Did you see Rtings video of Canvas vs The Frame? Both have advantages and disadvantages but they said GET THE CANVAS — there's not a really good reason to get the much more expensive Samsung The Frame.

I have both and am returning the Samsung Frame, and will get a second Canvas. The Canvas is easy to use and easy to adjust. It looks like actual artwork. Samsung Frame subscription service isn't worth the added expense.

One thing the Samsung Frame did better was handling CEC power-off behavior. When the Apple TV went into Standby, the Frame would go to Art Mode. The Canvas has a similar function but the implementation isn't as seamless.

I am an artist. I primarily bought it to display my own art. Got mine TEN days ago, set it up in a breeze. It has more functional, better menu features than Samsung's The Frame. BUT the enormous joy of the first days was ruined by a green vertical line appearing on screen after 8 days.

Having seen the Hisense CanvasTV IRL in both Art mode and TV mode, I can say that it does not match up to Samsung's The Frame at all. Art Mode on the Hisense CanvasTV just did not feel 'as real' — you can still tell that it's fake art. Matte Screen did not look as 'Matte'. Display quality was not as impressive.

I just got mine and love the display but am having trouble in art mode. After changing all my timers, the display goes black after 15 minutes. I have changed all timers in all the different settings and it consistently goes to sleep after 15min.

I have a marble tile floor to ceiling fireplace and it is nearly impossible to hide the one connect. The Hisense is a game changer for those of us who truly want a TV that can sub as art in the living room with no box to hide.

The biggest annoyance for us on the Hisense was the power cord. Even with a recessed outlet located on our wall behind the TV, the cord protruded and caused the tv to not lay flat against the wall. We had to change out the power cord to a low profile one for the best wall position.

I think it's solid. It's nicely made and a decent tv. Much cheaper. Less to deal with due to there being no one connect box like with Samsung. But the art itself doesn't look REAL REAL. It looks good enough for me though. I think it depends more on lighting in the room and the specific art you use.

I'm very happy with the Canvas currently especially that the wooden frame part actually comes with it and the price point. I've had a couple people who thought it was an actual painting and I find the tv quality is pretty good. But disclaimer, I am far from a TV quality perfectionist.

I bought a Hisense canvas a month ago and am very happy with it. I've watched movies and sports and have had no issue, I find the picture to be great. Sometimes I think these TV people are like fancy wine drinkers — 'anything less than the best just tastes awful' while I'm drinking mediocre wine and enjoying it. The canvas tv has been fine. I wish it had more art is my main complaint. It does look like a piece of art on the wall.

I got the Canvas primarily as a photo frame. You can link Google Photos albums as a screensaver, but for art mode you have to upload the images manually either via the web interface or a usb drive. With art mode, when you upload your own media, it all goes into one category — I can't have a category for photos of kids and another for landscape photos.

We just got ours a few days ago. It reliably turns off when motion stops but ideally it should turn back on when you walk in so that the 'art' experience is intact. It does not do that. For something marketed as an art display, not being able to trust it to wake up automatically is a significant flaw.

I will say this: looks great on wall, sits flush even with having to plug cords into the back. The mat finish will throw you off coming from regular screens. It looks flatter, but when watching a movie it still looks crisp. But if you're getting this TV for the viewing experience, I would look elsewhere.

Yes it comes with a bunch of artwork like the Frame TV, not high rez photos like chromecast but you can add your own photos. It can be set to go to art mode for 15min, 30min, 1hr, or more and will stay on art as long as motion is detected.

I just got the CanvasTV yesterday. It looks amazing. Was pretty easy to hang. And the google tv interface is great. The picture is pretty much the same as the Samsung Frame.

Flush. 1.4 inches thick. Easy with a recessed box behind it. Amazing matte coating. Yes the auto brightness works. Yes it's easy to upload art. Yes you can slideshow. Absolutely stunning and so realistic, I'm blown away.

The Hisense does not have an equivalent of the OneConnect box, so all cables have to be run to the TV, which is only a problem for cable tv, gaming, or surround sound. Not a problem if you just want Netflix, etc.

After a recent update I want to keep Art Mode off completely. Now when I turn my Apple TV off, the art mode comes on. Their support couldn't help.

One thing I've noticed in ours is that the built in Smart TV electronics seems to be way slower and receive way less software and app updates than our LG smart TV.
