Summary

The Hisense U7N has earned a strong reputation as one of the best value mini-LED TVs on the market, with hundreds of Reddit owners consistently praising its picture quality relative to its price point. Most buyers coming from budget LED or entry-level 4K TVs are genuinely stunned by the brightness, HDR performance, and contrast. The TV appeals most to people who want a significant visual upgrade without paying OLED prices, and for that audience it largely delivers. That said, it's not without real trade-offs: VA panel black smearing in dark gaming scenes is a recurring complaint, and the 75-inch model uses an ADS Pro panel that notably underperforms the other sizes in contrast and blooming. The consistent theme across threads is that this TV punches well above its price class — but buyers who game heavily in dark environments or sit off-axis should weigh their options carefully.

Pros

  • Exceptional brightness for the price — the 55" and 65" VA panel models can hit around 1000-1150 nits SDR and 1300 nits HDR, making HDR content visibly impactful even in moderately lit rooms
  • Mini-LED local dimming produces deep blacks and high contrast that owners frequently describe as night-and-day vs. their previous budget or mid-range sets
  • Native 120Hz panel with 4K/144Hz support via HDMI 2.1, with users confirming smooth PS5 and Xbox Series X gaming performance; PC users have even unlocked 240Hz at 1080p
  • Excellent glare handling — multiple users noted it outperforms glossy-panel competitors and even some pricier Sony models in bright rooms
  • Built-in subwoofer and strong speaker system praised specifically in the U7N tier, a meaningful step up from the U6N
  • Atsc 3.0 tuner included, broad codec support (Dolby Vision, Atmos, DTS, HDR10+, HDMI 2.1), and available in sizes from 55" to 100" — solid value at every size point except 75"

Cons

  • VA panel black smearing is a documented and recurring issue: dark HDR gaming scenes show red and black trailing, especially on PS5 titles like The Last of Us and Dead Space — some users returned the TV specifically for this
  • The 75" model uses an ADS Pro (IPS-type) panel instead of VA, resulting in significantly weaker native contrast and worse blooming compared to other sizes; multiple buyers returned it after comparing
  • VRR implementation has issues at certain frame rates — users report screen tearing around 100Hz, needing to cap at 90 or 110fps to avoid problems, and general VRR instability when enabled
  • eARC reliability is a known multi-year problem across Hisense models — several owners reported soundbars and AV receivers losing audio sync, sometimes requiring hardware swaps to resolve
  • Dolby Vision is reported as oddly dark on certain apps (Disney+, some streaming services) on the U7N due to lower peak brightness vs. U8N — brightness-sensitive viewers may find it underwhelming in DV mode
  • Long-term reliability concerns persist: reports of backlight failures, dead pixels appearing within months, and firmware updates breaking features — extended warranty is strongly recommended by experienced owners

Dark Gaming Scenes Are the U7N's Achilles Heel

Owners who play PS5 games with dark environments consistently run into red and black smearing that no settings combination fully eliminates. Some worked around it by disabling VRR or capping frame rates, but many returned the TV. If most of your gaming is in bright or colorful games, it's a non-issue — but horror and dark-aesthetic titles expose the VA panel's limits.

The 75" Is a Different TV Than the Rest

Hisense quietly uses an ADS Pro (IPS-type) panel in the 75" U7N while all other sizes get a VA panel. The trade-off is wider viewing angles but significantly weaker contrast and heavier blooming. Buyers upgrading from a 65" VA model to the 75" have been disappointed — if contrast matters, the 65" U8N or a different brand's 75" is a smarter choice.

A $200 Professional Calibration Transforms the Picture

Multiple owners mentioned that the U7N out of the box is good, but a professional ISF calibration — covering HDR, SDR, and game modes using a colorimeter — elevates it to a level that embarrasses much pricier TVs. Rtings.com calibration presets are a free alternative that still make a substantial difference. The TV's strong hardware clearly has more to give than its factory settings deliver.

I'm absolutely blown away by the picture quality on the Hisense. I came from a TCL 6 series that was only about 4 years old and it's absolute night and day difference. I have an LG G3 OLED in my other room, and while this won't quite match it obviously, it comes a lot closer than I expected.

I think for most people the U7N and TCL QM7 are the sweet spot for price and performance. That said if the 8 series was on sale and within $200 of the 7, I would splurge on the 8.

U8N has much better contrast and black levels. It also has insane brightness. U7N is about 1000 nits SDR and U8N can hit 3200 nits. In HDR it's 1300 vs 3800.

I bought the U7N 65 recently for my gaming room for $700 at Best Buy. I like the TV a lot. It's not as good as my LG G3 in my living room, but it also didn't cost over $2k. It's great for gaming, the picture is pretty good and the sound isn't bad at all. I think this is the top of the budget tv world, I'm honestly amazed for the price.

With mine there was massive red and black smearing on dark black and red objects. Playing on PS5 this is easily noticeable on dark HDR games and scenes. I have played around with every possible setting from VRR to limited dynamic range and nothing removes it. Only stops it a little when you increase the darkness which defeats the purpose of the TV. And even then it's still bad. Easily noticeable.

I went with the U7N over the U6N, super easy choice. The U6N has nothing on the U7N.

U7N is already very good. U8N is brighter, and people will talk about that all the time, but ask yourself, do you need your TV to be so bright? I have the U7N and I have to reduce the brightness, otherwise it hurts my eyes, especially in HDR mode.

After a professional calibration and a month of use, I'm really happy with my 85U7N purchase. Things look so pleasing to the eye, like you wouldn't believe it for a TV this price. Handles glare really well too. Better than my dad's Sony.

I have the U7N 55inch and it's pretty good, but mind you I didn't downgrade from an OLED to a mini-LED, the difference is gonna be noticeable. The contrast is pretty good but not excellent and ghosting is present. If you can afford to spend a little more go with a U8N; there is a big jump in local dimming zones giving it a contrast much superior to that of a U7N and the blacks are gonna be more black.

I have this TV and absolutely love it. Picture is awesome for the price and watching movies went up another level. That being said, if you're expecting OLED quality blacks, it's not. It's still pretty good, but you have to be reasonable with your expectations. I 100% recommend the TV though. The sound sucks, so make sure to invest in a sound bar.

I also bought the 85U7N a month ago. The price is incredible, and the performance is much better than I expected for the price. The contrast from the mini LEDs is great for movies, and the motion is so smooth for sports. I'm very happy with this television. I hope it has longevity.

About 4 months in with my 55" U78N and couldn't be happier. Ended up getting it for essentially the same reason as you noted - for the price, there wasn't anything better, and I was routinely finding more expensive TVs score worse on RTINGS.com. Perfect balance between budget price & not jumping up to an OLED. Definitely needs calibration out of the box, though!

I was stuck on this vs the U8N and ultimately couldn't come up with a reason to spend the extra $300 or whatever it was for the U8 and couldn't be happier with the U7N for the cost on sale.

Spend the extra $150 or so and get the U8N. Like 2-3 times brighter. Much better for HDR.

I got a new U7 from Costco to replace the thoroughly unreliable Sony Bravia we got in February. It's awesome. A major upgrade in fit, finish and function. I've seen a lot of people shit on Hisense here, but we've had good luck with ours and are quite happy.

This isn't a defect like some have said, this is a known issue with Hisense TVs for a long time now. It always surprises me when reviews fail to mention things like this, the often sluggish user interface, etc.

I use it with my PC. If the FPS is not close to, or 120 it will look very bad. Lower you go the worse it gets. 60FPS looks real bad. But on console it is always 60 or less. Even on 120fps the dark brown places still look off, but manageable. This TV is 120fps or you're screwed.

9 months into my U7N and I'm getting dead pixels and the screen randomly flashes when it's off.

I'm have a 55 inch U7N. I had a Sony 950H before that. U7N is very solid and a good television. With brighter content it really shines, as good as the Sony practically. Dark scenes don't look great at times especially with older films. Dolby Vision also doesn't pop like the Sony. But HDR content is quite good. It was a bit less than half the price of the Sony X90L so I thought it was a solid bargain.

That's VA — not a defect, just how it is. Pixel response is slow so you get these ugly smears when pixels change brightness from light to dark and vice versa. Also affects the brightness level of the overall picture so you could get this awful brightness flickering. Great color and pretty deep blacks if you like looking at static content though.

I got the 75 inch with the ADS/IPS panel and have never seen these problems. Maybe because it's not a VA panel?

I bought a U7N a week ago and I'm running into the same issue. Went with it due to the high ratings on rtings as well. Going to call Best Buy tomorrow to return it, the smearing is incredibly distracting and I play a lot of darker games. Going to go with the QM7 as well.

I bought the 100 U7N in January. Love, love, love it! The picture quality is impressive and so is the size. I took about 5 seconds to realize that size matters. Could never go back to a smaller TV. You will NOT be disappointed.

I've owned a Hisense 65U75N for around a year. I've been very pleased with the upgraded black-levels that the mini-LED technology enables from regular 4K TVs. On the other hand, I had some color problems to start with involving running in HDR and Dolby Vision which were resolved over time as the software was updated, and I have never had any luck with the Filmmaker mode or Energy Saver mode on the TV due to flickering.

When I entered the store I could see both TVs from around 25 meters distance and the U7N struck my eyes with brightness, color, deep darks and clear motion compared to basically everything else on display. When comparing pure UHD demo picture quality, only 2 other TVs were on the same level — one being LG C4 and the other being a Samsung flagship.

Bought a U8N two months ago, eARC stopped working last week out of nowhere, and couldn't be fixed by factory resetting both the TV and AVR. Tried multiple HDMI cables and fudged with the settings for hours. Now I have a beautiful, new TV that cannot output sound properly. If you Google 'Hisense ARC stopped working' you'll see that this is a widespread and known issue that Hisense has not fixed in multiple years and models.

I had the U7N originally, it has much better screen reflection handling and a great picture on bright stuff, but I play a lot of horror/dark games on my PC on TV and the dark smearing was just unpleasant.

I just got the 75" U7N 5 days ago and it's awesome. I spent many hours researching before choosing, and I'd be 100% happy with my choice if it weren't for one fatal flaw — a dumb, and very petty fatal flaw — my Sonos soundbar (eArc) doesn't show the volume level on the screen. Just a picture of a speaker with the + or- icon. It's driving me crazy that I can't tell the number of volume.

If its a model with Vidaa OS and you want to use your PC with this TV not only for gaming but also for media with a PC, I highly recommend not to Buy a Hisense. With Vidaa, a PC connected to a Hisense TV through HDMI, the TV is stuck in PC Mode. This greys out all the advanced picture settings and there's no way to disable this PC Mode. Hisense knows about this but I doubt they will make people able to disable PC Mode with future updates.

I love mine with the PS5. Haven't had any issues out of it. I was skeptical of Hisense and called them junk for the longest time, but I'm a believer now. Amazing TV, especially for the price!

I am hoping my geek squad protection plan covers the horrible ghosting on my U7N. I watched a movie with darker scenes and golden color hue and the red ghosting looked absolutely horrendous. So bad that I shut it off. It literally looked like bright red flashes of light every time someone moved.

We like the PQ on our 65 U7N. Only problem is that it doesn't play nice with our Vizio sound bar. It's slow to recognize it when powering on the TV so it will revert to TV speakers.

I have the U8N. It's been great! But with the hit or miss DSE, I'd say if you're happy with your TV, just keep it and enjoy. Also, Hisense is known for crapping out after a couple years. Save that money for your next set.

I picked up the 85U7N back in February. Picture is great and the interface is smooth. I'm in the weeds with it right now though because it randomly stopped sending audio through ARC to my AV receiver. Tried everything the last three nights and I think I'm throwing in the towel and just connecting a digital optical audio cable.

Literally got our U7N last week and it's been great. Upgraded from a Hisense 65 inch after 9 years so got some previous experience with the company. I'm super happy with it — obviously UHD content is king on it and it looks absolutely spectacular.

It's only good until they break it with a firmware update and then will not allow you to have a flash of the firmware because you are out of 1 yr manufacturer warranty.

The brightness of the U7N allows for excellent HDR and Dolby Vision and the blacks are much, much better. If you weren't planning on adding a soundbar the U7N built-in speakers are phenomenal. For just 'watching TV' the U6N is great. If you want movies to really pop and have a more immersive experience the U7 is the way to go.

I've received 3 defective U7Ns before I gave up last week. All 3 had defective LED panels and just quit working after a couple of days. If you look it up Hisense has a class action lawsuit against them for this exact issue on various models.

Gaming on this TV is probably like a 8.5/10. It's pretty great, it's probably the best budget gaming TV out right now. LG OLED will probably be better with ghosting in low light and contrast and vibrancy. Only flaw with the Hisense is when the image is mostly black, like during loading screens, there is some noticeable bloom.

1000% the 65U8N over the 75U7N. The 75U7N ADS panel has significantly worse native contrast than the other sizes of U7N and the local dimming won't make up for it. The 65U8N has a comical amount more zones and brightness output — 55U7N has 240 zones at 1150 nits, 65U8N has 1600 zones at 2800 nits — so if you were impressed by the 55U7N then the 65U8N will blow your mind, whereas the 75U7N contrast and blooming will disappoint.
