Summary

The Hisense U8N is a mini-LED TV that Reddit's community largely considers one of the best value propositions in the sub-$1,000 segment, with owners consistently praising its extreme brightness, deep blacks, and near-OLED contrast at a fraction of the price. Most users coming from mid-range TVs are blown away, while those upgrading from OLED report an adjustment period and some frustration with contrast and color management. The 65" is widely regarded as the sweet spot — it offers the best dimming zone density and peak brightness of all sizes — while the 55" trades brightness and zone count for size, and the 75" uses an ADS Pro panel that sacrifices some contrast for wider viewing angles. Software bugs, out-of-box calibration issues, and a split between Google TV and VIDAA OS across regions add friction to an otherwise impressive panel.

Pros

  • Exceptional brightness for a sub-$1K TV — the 65" and larger sizes regularly hit 2,000–3,000 nits peak, making HDR content genuinely impactful in bright living rooms
  • Black levels deep enough to fool OLED skeptics in typical viewing conditions, with local dimming that punches well above its price class
  • Strong built-in speakers with a rear-facing subwoofer that multiple owners say eliminates the need for a soundbar
  • Google TV on US models is fast and app-rich; pairing with an Apple TV 4K or Nvidia Shield further boosts performance for users who want more control
  • Color volume metrics rival much pricier OLEDs — the 75" ADS Pro panel specifically offers wide horizontal viewing angles rare in mini-LED at this price
  • HDMI 2.1 support enables 4K@120Hz for PS5 and Xbox Series X gaming, with VRR and low input lag in game mode

Cons

  • Out-of-box calibration is poor across all picture modes — colors run oversaturated, whites clip aggressively, and getting a natural image requires significant manual tuning or paid calibration
  • The 55" model has roughly half the dimming zones and peak brightness of the 65", making the size step a meaningful performance downgrade, not just a size difference
  • Dolby Vision and HDR10+ handling has been buggy on VIDAA-based EU units — users report a washed-out haze, with factory reset being the most common fix
  • Motion handling in fast content like FPS gaming and sports is a weak point; multiple owners with PS5s noted blur at ~100Hz VRR that made competitive gaming frustrating
  • QC concerns are recurring — reports of vertical banding, cloudy panels, random reboots, and motherboard failures appear across ownership threads, making an extended warranty strongly advisable
  • Picture mode randomly switches to Energy Saving or Sports mode on some units, and app stability on Google TV can be inconsistent without periodic factory resets

Is the 55" U8N Actually a Different TV?

Owners comparing the 55" and 65" models say the size difference comes with a real performance gap — fewer dimming zones, lower peak brightness, and the same processor as the older U8K. If you're constrained to 55", the value case weakens considerably.

The OLED Killer That Still Needs Calibration to Shine

Reddit's consensus is clear: the U8N is a phenomenal panel trapped behind mediocre out-of-box settings. Users who spend time calibrating — or follow resources like Quantum TV or RTINGS settings — report a picture that genuinely challenges TVs twice the price. Those who don't are often left disappointed.

Apple TV Fixes More Than You'd Expect

A surprising number of U8N owners say pairing the TV with an Apple TV 4K resolved issues beyond just the UI — including Dolby Vision inconsistencies, app lag, and motion rendering. It's become a quasi-official recommendation in the community for buyers who find Google TV underwhelming.

I got the 65" U8N just a few days ago. The picture quality out of box was absolutely stunning. I turned on The Bear and my jaw dropped. This is the most beautiful TV I've ever owned and I've owned quite a few. Colors are magnificent, the blacks are so very black, and the sound is actually very decent.

The differences between the 55" and 65" are pretty striking, but mainly when it comes to brightness. Though the 55" still looks amazing when viewing those OLED HDR demos on YouTube. Both have insanely desirable black levels that defy explanation.

I just bought the U8N and I love it, it's honestly super close to OLED. Whether to wait is a tale as old as time — there will probably be a price increase and I doubt that the next gen will be much better than this gen considering how much better the N is over its predecessor.

The 55" is an excellent TV. The only real tangible difference between it and the 65" is that it has less dimming zones and has a lower peak brightness. However, that's not really a problem. The 55" model is smaller, so it should come as no surprise that it has less dimming zones because it doesn't need as many to achieve the same effect.

I also have a u8n. I did improve the picture once I calibrated it professionally myself. If you can use the calman service feature it's worth the money.

I have the same TV in a basement. For the price it's been a solid smart TV with a very presentable picture. Like you said, it's not on par with the $2-3K OLEDs but it's a very solid TV for under $1K.

Switched all my tvs to AppleTV. Never looked back. Still have nvidia shields connected, but they seem clunky and congested compared to my apple tv 4k now. Clean interface, no ads.

I have a U8N and I don't know how much better it could get. I bought 85" on sale for $1699.00.

I would really recommend getting the 65" over the 55" u8. It really feels like the 65" is the intended standard for the u8. It has twice the dimming zones, etc. I have the 65u8n for a couple months and so far I love it. My first Hisense. I had no issues with the panel with uniformity.

Good thing you got the warranty because chances are it will crap out at 4-5 years. My 2021 U8G went out last week, right around the 4 year mark. It was awesome the entire time we had it and then one day last week I took a nap while watching it and when I woke up it wouldn't turn on anymore.

I've already got those settings figured out. Custom 10/10, Warm 1. Used tech Steve's color calibration settings. I was more or less reviewing the out of box experience.

I prefer the 75" u8n over the 77" s90d. I had both and returned the s90d, just could not deal with all the dark scenes looking black. U8n is much brighter and less eye strain.

Here's why I added the Apple TV 4K to my U8N: Faster, stronger Wi-Fi. Pressing Home takes me to my list of apps, not my Google profile. No ads. Faster app switching. Great video and audio upscaling. Also, since the TV is not using its Wi-Fi and Google TV features constantly, the components may last longer.

I also have the U8N. I never even logged my Google account to it. I just use Apple TV on it along with all the other tv's in my house. I love the consistent, smooth, and ad-free UI throughout all my TV's.

My new 55" U8N is soooo annoying. Too bright. Too slow. Remote has no Fast Forward or Rewind buttons, and the pause button is under my palm. I can't find a single decently designed compatible remote anywhere online.

I have a U7N and recently paired it with an Apple TV and have been enjoying the experience. I also found the Google TV layout on the U7N to be laggy and at some points glitchy. Apple TV has been much smoother by far.

I've had the 85" for two months and absolutely love it. Zero issues. I was considering an LG G4 but this gave me 90-95% of the picture for 1/3 of the price.

I've had a 65" U8N for around 5 or 6 months and I feel like mine has a lot of noticeable vertical banding. Might try to do a warranty replacement on mine. Damn panel lottery. Other than that it's been a great TV.

I've only had my 55u8n for a couple months, it's used to play ps5 exclusively and so far I love it! Games look great, you can use the TV remote to move around the ps5 menu, you can add cross hairs to the TV, it can display fps in the corner. Overall I'm very happy with the TV!

Have the 85U8N — love it! Stunning colors, super bright, and pitch black blacks. Hisense has had issues in the past with their older models and their budget lines, but U8N is solid.

I just bought the U8N 75 inch and its so good for the price! I am very happy with my purchase and I use Apple TV 4k for streaming. I ran some YouTube 4k videos that has deep blacks and the output was almost like OLED.

Two of my main TVs (Vizio & Samsung), both died the same week after a good service life. I purchased a 75" U8N. Love it so far. Price matched it down $200 since the purchase via the Best Buy App.

Have that exact TV for 9 months now and I am still blown away on a regular basis. I know OLED is technically better. But boy have I not once sat down and said I wish this TV was better. I also got it for $900 and couldn't be happier. I went and got a sound bar and a PS5 with the price difference between that and the mid level OLED I was price shopping.

DV is shockingly poor on my EU U8N, it's too dark, even with as much manual tweaking of dv custom profile.

They are fine as long as you buy the extended warranty...great panels, beautiful...but bad internals...warranty service tech just left my house yesterday after putting in new motherboard and various other parts.

The TV is really amazing and probably one of the best, if not the best value/feature tvs. You would have to compare it side by side with an oled to see the difference and even then it has to be a new LG G5 because the other ones lack brightness. The sound is really amazing for tv speakers alone.

I test drove the 55 u8n for about 30 days and returning it. HDR from youtube is beautiful. Dolby vision is hazy and washed out with back lighting control issues. HDR 10+ same issue, buggy firmware the brightness has to be adjusted constantly. Blooming is notable in a dark room.

I bought the 55 this week and it's fine, looks great and no complaints, played BO6 on it and watched a few movies. Worth it, enough brightness to spare. Solid 8.5/10.

I ended up buying the 65 inch and I like the TV for most things but it's not good for fast gaming. BO6 blur is bad. When VRR is enabled, games around 100 hz get bad too. I have a PS5 Pro and you're supposed to leave 120 Hz off and VRR on to get 'fidelity' graphics and around 100 frames gameplay. If I lock it at 60 it's less blurry but it's still blurry compared to my IPS.

Personally I feel Hisense screens have huge potential and they lack the calibration and optimization in their OS handling the actual User experience. What has worked insanely great for me is to use an apple TV box with the TV. The picture quality gets better overall, the apple TV calibration is plug and play.

Yes, I returned mine for the U7N 65 and very satisfied. Hisense did a disservice to the U8N 2025 for the price. I got the U7N for $799 and from reviews it's the best in Hisense line up.

The u8 series is generally always a really solid choice. U7 is great for the money but u8 is a great all around choice. Beats the equivalent Samsung mini led at like half the price never mind Sony. My u8h is still going strong from 2022.

On the 85" U8N the black levels are OLED like and the contrast is excellent. More dimming zones typically gives less blooming effect and allows for higher peak brightness. The vast majority of HDR/Dolby Vision movies and shows use a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, so the 85" handles real content very well.

I have a U8N — just got an Apple TV 4K and it's an improvement for me. I like Dolby vision working across all apps. I also think some of the apps on native Google TV such as Prime weren't properly optimized for the local dimming, but it works better on AppleTV.

This TV is absolutely worth it. And I'm coming from a Sony Bravia. Had it a month now and performance is impressive. Very very bright, super colorful, the blacks are Deep and literally 1 minute away from OLED. This TV makes HD Netflix look UHD and the sound is excellent. You may not need a sound bar — unsure how they managed to get all that bass in a TV.

Every brand has bad panels. I returned my 65" Panasonic w95a because the backlight was clearly not working properly. Loving my u75n 65" from Costco so far. Also, the 75" has the ADS Pro panel and therefore poor contrast compared to the other sizes. Better viewing angles though.

I just returned my 55 U8N last night because the picture quality was very disappointing. The only good viewing angle was straight in front. 30 degrees either side the picture became a very low contrast. And I had to keep messing with brightness and picture modes because it was either blowing out highlights or something was off.

I bought a u8n 55 in for my bedroom on prime day for $648. It is the best TV in my house now. I got a 65 in Samsung ks8000 in my living room which is still nice, but the U8n is insane. Movies almost look 3D.

I've had 2 75inch hisense tvs and sent them both back in last 4 months. U8k wouldn't stay connected to the wifi and cable upscaling was horrendous. U7n even worse upscaling. My 8yr old Samsung led does better.

I got the 75" for the size and the better screen than the other sizes offer. I use my PC on it. Been playing Horizon Zero Dawn with HDR on and it looks spectacular.

I recently got this tv and returned it, genuinely thought the motion blur and upscaling was awful. Tried for days trying to get the correct settings etc but watching fast paced sports became unbearable.
