Summary

The LG C5 OLED has landed as one of the most enthusiastically received TVs on Reddit in recent memory, with new owners consistently reporting that it permanently ruins their tolerance for LED/LCD displays. The C5 hits a sweet spot as the price-to-performance king of the OLED lineup, earning recommendations over the B5 for its superior HDR brightness and over the G5 for its more accessible price tag. It's equally loved as a home theater centerpiece, a PS5 gaming display, and even a large-format Mac workstation monitor. The main real-world criticisms revolve around WebOS being cluttered with ads out of the box and the Magic Remote feeling stripped-down compared to older LG or third-party remotes — complaints that have little to do with the panel itself.

Pros

  • Jaw-dropping OLED picture quality with infinite contrast — owners consistently report that LED TVs look unwatchable after a few days with the C5, with blooming immediately visible on older panels
  • Exceptional HDR and Dolby Vision performance, with brightness levels that are noticeably higher than the B5 and previous C-series generations — rtings.com confirms the C5 is nearly twice as bright in SDR vs the C1
  • 144Hz panel with full 4K support on all HDMI ports makes it a genuine upgrade for PS5 Pro and PC gaming, with multiple users picking it specifically as a high-refresh monitor or console display
  • Available in 42" and 48" sizes that double effectively as premium desktop monitors, with users praising the color accuracy, glossy screen, and high refresh rate for Mac and PC workstation setups
  • Consistently rated 'Best Overall OLED' by major review outlets like Tom's Guide — positioned as the sweet spot between the entry-level B5 and the premium G5, and clearly beloved by the community
  • 5-year OLED panel warranty when purchased through retailers like Costco adds long-term peace of mind that competitors like Samsung don't match

Cons

  • WebOS ships loaded with ads, promotional banners, and content recommendations — requires deliberate digging through settings to disable, and even then some users find the UI clunky compared to Android TV or Apple TV 4K
  • Magic Remote is divisive: fewer physical buttons than older LG remotes or third-party options, with dedicated streaming service buttons replacing input shortcuts — a genuine frustration for users with external devices like NVIDIA Shield or AV receivers
  • Subtitle brightness in HDR/Dolby Vision content is extremely intense — white subtitles in dark scenes described as 'flash bang' level bright, with limited fix options across streaming apps (Netflix in particular has no opacity control)
  • The B5 vs C5 debate is real: in a pitch-black basement or dark room, the brightness advantage of the C5 may not justify a $400–$700 price premium depending on size — side-by-side owners report negligible real-world difference in dark environments
  • PPI is noticeably lower on the 55" and larger sizes when used as a monitor — text rendering is not retina-sharp at typical desk distances, making the 42" or 48" the recommended sizes for close-up workstation use
  • LG warranty coverage can be voided when purchased through third-party eBay sellers even when listed as authorized dealers — confirmed reports of LG refusing warranty claims on eBay purchases of previous C-series models

WebOS and the Magic Remote Are the Real Complaints

Almost universally, owners say the panel is stunning — but WebOS ships with ads plastered everywhere and a remote that dropped physical input buttons in favor of streaming service shortcuts. The near-universal fix Reddit recommends is pairing with an Apple TV 4K and ignoring the built-in UI entirely.

Is the C5 Worth It Over the B5? Reddit Is Actually Split

The C5 is brighter on paper, but owners who have both say the real-world difference in a dark room is negligible without a direct side-by-side comparison. The $400–$700 size-dependent price gap has multiple users recommending the B5 and putting the savings toward a proper surround sound system instead.

The 42" C5 Has Quietly Become Reddit's Favorite PC Monitor

A growing thread of Mac and PC users are running the 42" C5 as a full workstation display, citing the OLED color, 144Hz refresh, and glossy panel as advantages no traditional monitor can match at the price. The consensus: 55" is too large for desk use, 42" is the sweet spot.

I bought one this morning at that price, an hour later they changed the price back to $1,400 due to a pricing error. Brand new with the 5 year warranty too. The price definitely won't ever come near that again.

I was just thinking about how this C5 55" is basically the same price I got my C1 55" for in early 2022, and thought that the OLED price premium on TVs would have come down a bit more after four years... turns out that $999 then had the same buying power as $1109 would now. So I guess that makes this a pretty good price.

RTings is a very good starting point for the basic settings. However, over time you will notice what bothers you. After the default settings, the LG is full of ads and delivers a lot of annoying pop-ups that extremely interfere with the viewing experience. If you want a lean, ad-free, and well-functioning system, you still have to tweak a lot of little things.

A genuine complaint I have (77") is that the whites are so gosh darn bright that subtitles are kinda distracting. I wish there was an option for gray subtitles lol. And NO I'm not going to turn down any settings that might solve this. I will suffer with the whitest of whites and the blackest of blacks!

My 55 inch C5 is also my first oled, my reaction was: "man this look hd as fuck" I'm never going back to lcd screens ever again, those colors are unbeatable

The bad points are problems with 99.9% of TVs on the market, unfortunately. Sony probably has the best OS because it's very vanilla google without much bloatware.

My only real complaint so far about my C5 lol. Was watching Stranger Things and the subtitles hit like a flash bang in those pitch black scenes

For the past two weeks, I've been using a 55-inch LG C5 OLED TV as my primary display for my M4 Max MacBook Pro. Overall, the experience has been very good. While I can't recommend this size to everyone, I can definitely recommend this TV if you like larger than standard workspaces and high refresh rates.

The 42" with discounts is a hell of a monitor, C-series gang represent. Do yourself a favor and sort out an actual mounting setup though, a cheap VESA adapter plate (300x200 to 100x100, which is like all of them) + any decent arm/stand/whatever that can fit larger screens is good. Its very light for its size so you don't need any of the specialty stuff.

I took advantage of this a few days ago with the PayPal deal. $600 for a 42" is a no-brainer pairing for a PC/console hybrid setup.

I bought a b4 last year through this store and LG won't cover warranty just because you buy it from eBay. No matter EE is an authorized dealer. Do your research first with them.

I have three LG OLED TVs in my home and I do think they have great picture quality. I don't love their remotes or the built in streaming apps though. The remote is hard to use and the apps are buggy. If you pair it with a third party streamer like an Apple TV it works great.

You have different settings for all the different modes SDR, HDR, and DV. You have to set them all individually which can be confusing. Pretty much used all their settings except filmmaker mode. I absolutely hate it. Went with what felt good to my eyes.

I'm also shopping for an OLED TV and I plan on going with the LG because I've read too many negative stories about Samsung tvs crapping out quickly.

Just got the B5 myself after deciding between both for days. I couldn't make up my mind. Decided to get a B5 first since it's currently heavily discounted versus the C5 (700$ difference here). So far I enjoy it and I know the C5 might be better for some things but I don't know if it worth 700$.

Got mine yesterday and it's changed my life. I never knew how good a game could look. Im an introvert and I take care of my disabled mom. So I don't have friends or any family that would have oled tvs. I havent seen one in person until now. Its Amazing

Both are great tvs. I bought the Samsung because it's in a really bright room and the Samsung tested better in bright light, and also overall tested better on rtings. I have no ragrets

I've changed the opacity or changed subtitles to gray on most streaming apps and AirPlay. Most of those are customizable. The subtitles in hdr content (100% brightness) was unnecessarily distracting. Made me try to standardize the subtitles across most platforms including sub size.

For movies, LG is a better choice. For gaming and animation, Samsung. Both are good TVs.

You CAN turn off the ads. I literally have the basic car driving through a windy road home screen and the rest is extremely simplified. The remote took a bit of getting used to but now im good with it.

I just got a C5 77" for my basement last week and it's perfect. There are frequent deals on them now with the C6 coming soon, so it's pretty much the perfect time to keep an eye out for the right deal and get one.

LG OLED is what I have, and love it. Plus on Samsungs you can't experience Dolby Vision, only HDR, and you can experience both with LG.

I agree the remote and web os is horrible. Thankfully I already had an Apple TV 4K so I just use that. But god forbid I try to change the settings on the tv… it's horrible.

I've seen them next to each other. I watch my 77 B5 at home... and a 77 C5 at my brother's house every other day. There's absolutely no difference unless you have them next to each other and playing the exact same content. It's a total joke. B5 all the way...

Its not great, and is somewhat blurry even with the settings for text enabled. I went away from this setup on a 48" for that reason. 42" for the OLEDs is the best option imo.

It will ruin the experience of watching your OLD TV. Once I got the LG OLED TV I hated watching the old TV in my Bedroom (Which I loved before) It was a Sony Bravia 2018 LED.

I have a 77" LG G4 purchased June 2024. No complaints at all! LG has a 5 year warranty on their OLED panels, which was a big selling point for me over Samsung and Sony

The remote is the way you interact with the TV, I thought it was something we understood how to make, for now I fail to see how this is an improvement. My brother has an older lg oled, the ui seems much more easier to handle and a lot less bloated.

I tried it with a 42 inch LG oled. I just found I was moving my head too much. I've just got myself one of the LG 32 inch oled monitors, now that they're a reasonable price. That's the sweet spot.

I went with the C5 65" and the first night (last night) was mind blowing. Its a $400 difference at Costco, but I'm sure the B5 is better than any LCD.
