Summary

The LG G4 OLED is widely regarded as one of the best TVs money can buy, earning consistent praise from Reddit owners for its exceptional brightness, motion handling, and game-mode performance. The MLA-enhanced WOLED panel delivers a perceived depth and 3D-like image quality that resonates strongly with both gamers and movie enthusiasts. Community sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, though many users note that getting the best out of it requires proper setup — turning off energy saving, optimizing picture settings via resources like RTings, and feeding it high-quality content like 4K Blu-ray or high-bitrate streaming. It competes at the very top of the OLED market but sits at a more accessible price point than the Sony A95L, making it the value pick in blind shootouts and expert reviews alike. The G4 suits anyone who wants near-reference picture quality for movies, demanding gaming performance with 4x HDMI 2.1 ports, and doesn't want to pay the Sony premium.

Pros

  • MLA layer delivers measurably higher brightness than non-MLA OLEDs, with owners consistently reporting it holds up well even in bright rooms — a critical advantage over standard WOLED panels
  • Gaming performance is class-leading: 4x HDMI 2.1 ports, near-instantaneous response times, and a dedicated Game Optimizer mode that preserves color accuracy at low latency
  • Processor-driven motion handling rivals or beats Sony's in many real-world conditions, with improved Cinematic Movement AI reducing 24fps judder without soap-opera effect
  • Comes with a 5-year panel warranty including burn-in coverage — a major differentiator over the Samsung S95D and Sony A95L which offer far shorter panel warranties
  • Strong factory calibration and wide settings flexibility let advanced users dial in accurate color or boost saturation — RTings-based calibrations are widely shared in the community
  • 83-inch size includes MLA (unlike the G3 83") and is frequently praised as delivering an immersive gaming and cinema experience that smaller sizes simply can't replicate

Cons

  • WOLED color volume is inherently lower than QD-OLED — reviewers and owners consistently note the Samsung S95D and Sony A95L produce more vivid, saturated colors, especially for reds, out of the box
  • Came in third place in a reference-calibrated shootout (behind A95L and S95D), meaning for pure color accuracy relative to a mastering monitor, it trails QD-OLED competition
  • Requires intentional setup effort: Energy Saving mode must be disabled, Filmmaker mode can appear dim and yellow, and streaming compression on services like Amazon Prime significantly undercuts perceived quality
  • Some owners report electronic popping/panel noise, HDMI-CEC reliability issues, and remote power button failures after software updates — software quality control is a recurring complaint
  • Lacks HDR10+ support, which becomes relevant when accessing content on services or platforms that use HDR10+ exclusively instead of Dolby Vision
  • The 83" size commands a steep premium ($1,300+ over the 77") that most users find hard to justify unless gaming immersion is the primary use case

Does the G4 actually live up to the Reddit hype?

Many new owners report being underwhelmed initially — only to discover that compressed streaming content and factory settings were the culprit. Once properly calibrated and fed 4K physical media or high-bitrate streams, the experience shifts dramatically.

Third-place in shootouts, first-place in value

The G4 finished behind the A95L and S95D in calibration-based blind tests, but consistently wins on price-to-performance ratio. At $1,500 less than a comparable Sony, many enthusiasts say the G4 is the only rational choice.

Gamers have quietly made the G4 their default recommendation

While TV reviewers debate color accuracy rankings, the gaming community has converged around the G4 for its 4x HDMI 2.1 ports, consistent VRR performance, and game mode that doesn't sacrifice image quality — something the shootout format rarely tests.

I appreciate anything that further confirms my $3.4K purchase of my LG G4. Thanks for the post!

The low quality remotes on LG TVs are really a shame. Lack of backlight especially really makes it a problem to use at dark settings where OLEDs shine.

First, make sure you have it set up properly. Second, what kind of content are you watching? HD? SDR? HDR? Dolby Vision? I watched The Matrix in UHD Blu Ray and, Jee-sus! Was an incredible experience! Like seeing it for the first time again! Then I watched One Piece on Netflix and was disappointed to the point of thinking something was wrong with my setup. Turns out, their Dolby Vision mix is just bad.

This is just super subjective. For me I have the G4 77" and I got it for $3080. I hate Samsung but I do like the Sony (however I wouldn't have gotten it for $3k). Hence G4 is the bestest TV for me.

Doesn't look like a big upgrade for those who already have a G3. I'm a bit curious on the new AI element to Cinematic Movement but the fact no further details are mentioned leads me to believe the differences will be mostly negligible.

Welcome to the internet, the world of hyperbole. It's a good TV but people act like this TV is some crazy sorcery when it's not.

I straight up don't believe the G5 vs G4 comparison was done fairly or under ideal settings. The whites on the G4 look comically blue in the video. Is the G4 just that horrible at accurately representing colour?

That was pretty much my thought process ending up with the G3 as well. Sony = great but too expensive, Samsung = crap processing and no DV is a non-starter. Leaves LG OLED as the only sane alternative, 9/10 PQ at a price lower than Sony plus standard 5-year panel warranty, actually a very simple process.

Means nothing. Samsung's lack of DV should have immediately placed it last. If I'm paying a premium price for a top spec OLED, I want it to be compatible with the best content and formats.

Sounds like an incremental change, if you're not a hardcore gamer. I have a 77" G3, only reason I would consider a G4 is to move to the 83".

The G4 is the better purchase, too many issues with the G5 at the moment to warrant paying extra.

Your problem is Amazon prime. Its compression makes everything look terrible. For best results, connected through Ethernet, watch some Apple TV+ content, or a 4K Dolby Vision movie rented through the iTunes Store.

I got a G4 too. People here hyped it like it's some LSD experience, or getting a blowjob for your eyes. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice looking overpriced TV with a 10 year old remote, but it's nothing special.

Honestly? I have the G4 now and love it to death. However, if you really care about colors really popping off your screen, you're definitely better off with a Sony A95L (or one of the Samsungs) as QD OLED simply cannot be beaten color vibrancy wise. For me, I care a little more about clarity and fine details and perceived picture depth, so in the end still went for the G4.

The TV is only as good as the content you're giving it. Throw a 4K disc of Coco or Wall-E in there or a Planet Earth 4K and your socks will blow right off. It's kind of like buying a Ferrari and putting economy tires on it.

We have an 83" G4 mounted that we got a week ago and absolutely love it. We use it for our PS5 and streaming tv. Massive upgrade over our C7, especially in the game mode holding color with boosted latency. The brightness is also impressive (we've actually used the dark room setting to turn it down for our basement). No regrets at all.

I second this. Have the 55" G4 and it is often brighter than my old Sony XF90. OLED is glorious for gaming and HDR content, highly recommended!

I didn't really see much of a difference between G5 and G4. Maybe it's more noticeable in person.

Had my 77 G4 for a couple of months now, it's amazing. I upgraded from a C1, and the difference in brightness is massive, particularly in HDR. The motion handling is also massively improved, close to Sony's. I do not regret buying the G4.

After seeing other G5/G4 comparisons on YouTube, they seem to mention the biggest difference is for HDR content mastered for 4000 nits, which is limited. I think for all SDR and most HDR content, the difference won't be very apparent. If you have a G4, I wouldn't worry. It is still a top set.

G4 77" owner here and all I can say is WOW! Zero complaints so far, performance is even better than I expected - even a bit snappier than my father's G3 in terms of the UI, which was already pretty good! Do it, you won't regret it!

I bought my 83" G4 after seeing it inside of Best Buy. It currently has 700 hrs since new and I upgraded from a 65" EF9500 LG OLED and the picture quality is remarkable, truly a special TV.

Had an A95L, tons of motion issues aside from the flickering issues my panel had. Have a G4 now, wouldn't trade it for anything.

Had the 83 G4 for some time. Had terrible DSE, poor uniformity, pink tint and dead pixels. Swapped it for a 85 B9, would never buy/recommend WOLED again. I've had 5 different WOLED panels from different companies (LG Display obviously), all horrible in different ways.

I have the LG G4. I replaced it with a faulty Samsung S90C. To be honest the S90C was much more enjoyable to watch. The colours were much better. The LG G4 does have a bit more of a 3D look but the colours are a bit washed out to be honest when compared to the QD OLED TV. The Samsung has way more of that wow factor. I would still get a G4 because build quality is better.

Factoring in cost and value, the LG is a great choice. $5k for a 77" A95L and 2 HDMI 2.1 ports was a no go for me.

The G4 is a top of the line TV with subjectively one of the best pictures. However, the difference between best and mid range is subtle these days. Enthusiasts will love the minor improvements as it's their passion, but the average person will not necessarily see as much of a benefit.

Was set on the A95L 77" but when the Memorial Day sale happened I ended up going for the G4 83" which ended up being slightly cheaper after the discounts than the A95L. This TV is incredible. Playing Jedi Survivor on max settings with my PC that has a 4090. It's far better than the C2 42" I was sitting 2-3ft in front of using as a desktop monitor playing the same game. Brighter and better colors than the C2. Also helps to have 4x HDMI 2.1 ports if you need them.

Now is the time to buy the G4, save the money. Year to year is incrementally different, 3-4 years if not more is a significant upgrade.

I completely agree, people may say QD can do more color volume but the G4 is the most impressive TV I've ever seen. The HDR highlights just pop more than the A95L and S90D, at least in person in store. Seeing the C4 and G4 side by side is such a great demo of what MLA brings.

There's a lot of these posts where people are buying these expensive OLEDs due to these forums and then complaining. If you haven't owned a plasma or OLED before these should be a marked improvement in all areas for the most part. The fact that you can't see the difference probably means this ain't your bag — we don't all appreciate the differences and vision isn't equal.

Got a 65" one few weeks back. For me, the perfect TV. Great already out of the box (filmmaker mode is awesome, game mode works too with standard settings) but even better if you invest time with the settings. I love how snappy it is too (my Bravia was a sluggish pain to use).

Picked up a 65" G4 here in Aus. Came from a C1 55, which is one of the best TVs still for the age and size. Thought I wouldn't notice that much of a difference, but gawd damn it feels big enough. I'm blown away — can't recommend it enough.

Just got a G4 and I kind of agree the colors are washed out and pale in comparison to my 2018 Samsung Q7N. That said it's a massive upgrade for black levels.

I'm in love with my LG G4. However, the only real world flaw that isn't a nitpick is the electronic popping noises. It's a real thing. The C series line doesn't have this problem apparently.

Sony still has overall the best processing PERIOD, end of story. That being said, the G4 is right up there now. The Sony has better colours with the QD OLED panel, but the LG gets brighter and has better whites with the MLA layer on the WOLED panel, and a heat sink. For the 77" size Sony was $1500 more. I'd rather have the LG G4 with a Samsung Q990D soundbar for the same price.

Really disappointed with the G4. One of the biggest issues is that the TV often won't turn on or off with the Magic Remote. Since the latest software update, the power button just doesn't work. On top of that, HDMI-CEC is completely unreliable. I would not recommend LG, especially considering their disastrous customer service.

I'd go for the G4 personally. G5 can get brighter BUT it comes with no stand, the G4 does on 55" and 65" in North America. The G4 is the last to have the classic LG magic remote (you can use them like wiimotes). The new remote looks like a generic cheap smart TV remote whereas the classic is a proper TV remote.
