Summary

The LG QNED85A is one of the most controversial budget TVs of 2025, primarily because LG markets it as a 'MiniLED' TV while Reddit users have widely confirmed it uses an edge-lit backlight — not a full array. Sentiment across multiple subreddits is largely negative, with the core complaint being deceptive marketing that misleads buyers expecting the contrast and local dimming performance of true MiniLED panels. That said, a small segment of owners who paid budget prices and came from older or entry-level TVs report reasonable satisfaction with color and brightness in well-lit rooms. The QNED85A is best understood as an IPS edge-lit LCD dressed up with quantum dot color enhancement — adequate for casual daytime viewing, but a poor choice for dark room HDR use. The community consensus is clear: if you're spending anywhere near its retail price, better alternatives exist.

Pros

  • Good color accuracy and brightness for daytime or bright room viewing thanks to QNED (quantum dot) technology
  • webOS is widely praised as one of the smoothest and most reliable smart TV operating systems on the market
  • The 100-inch size variant reportedly uses full-array local dimming, making it the only QNED85A configuration worth considering for HDR
  • At heavily discounted prices (e.g., $400 for a 65" floor model), casual users report it as a solid step up from aging entry-level TVs
  • 120Hz panel on the 85A model offers smoother motion handling compared to the 60Hz QNED70
  • Larger screen sizes (98"+) provide impressive immersion for non-critical viewers watching at long distances

Cons

  • Edge-lit backlight causes severe blooming and poor local dimming — users report 'incredible' blooming on dark scenes with only ~6 dimming zones on most sizes
  • Marketed as MiniLED but is technically edge-lit; LG exploits the LED size definition rather than backlight configuration, which Reddit users widely call deceptive and misleading
  • Native contrast of ~1000:1 (IPS panel) means grey-black levels in dark rooms — terrible for movie watching or HDR content
  • At its $800-$1000 retail price range, the TCL QM6K and QM7K offer true full-array MiniLED with dramatically more dimming zones for the same or less money
  • One confirmed owner noted the 86" version has a bizarre center-mounted power connector requiring cord bending, secured with a twist tie — poor build quality detail
  • RTINGS scores for older QNED85 variants (2023/2024) are often misapplied to the 85A, leading buyers to overpay based on outdated review scores

Is the QNED85A Actually a MiniLED TV?

Technically yes — but only in the way that allows LG to put 'MiniLED' on the box. The LEDs are smaller, but they're still mounted on the edges, not across a full array. Reddit caught on fast, and the backlash has been significant.

Casual Viewers Don't Hate It — Power Users Do

Owners coming from decade-old TVs or budget sets often end up satisfied, especially in bright living rooms. The QNED85A falls apart when put under the scrutiny of anyone who expected true MiniLED HDR performance.

The 100" Exception Nobody Talks About

Multiple Reddit users have confirmed that only the 100-inch QNED85A uses 'Precision Dimming Technology' (full-array). Every other size gets 'Advanced Local Dimming' — which is edge-lit. If you need a massive screen and true MiniLED, that's the only config worth considering.

The LG QNED85 and Samsung QN70F are both edge lit TVs, however they're being deceptively marketed as MiniLEDs because the LEDs on the edge of the TV are smaller than what is traditionally used for an edge lit. It's very misleading and it's adding confusion to the market. It still has all the downsides of an edge lit, and none of the benefits of an actual MiniLED.

its bullshit that LG & Samsung are trying to do to fool people to buy their slop models

The latest one, "QNED85A", is a poor TV with very bad local dimming, I'd avoid that one. If you bought the U version then you're fine, but either of the other two offer poor overall value.

LG does not get good feedback on their QNED TVs. I'd do a TCL, preferably QM7K or QM8K.

This is a trash EDGE lit (!!!) tv with IPS panel and native contrast 1000:1. Old rtings reviews are useless (6 years old trash TVs often has ratings higher than nice modern ones). Return this shit and look at TCL c7k, W95A, QN90D.

C5 is what you want, specifically in a bright room, do NOT get the B5 as it does not use the EVO panel, meaning it will not get as bright as the C5. The immersion you speak of can be 2 things here, size vs quality of image. Size will always win over quality, to an extent — get both an OLED and an LCD in a darkened room, and this is where the real immersion begins and LCD starts to show its flaws like grey blacks, blooming, contrast etc.

It's because everyone is under the assumption that if it's a MiniLED that it will be direct lit and have full array LEDs. This is Samsung and LG's way of testing the waters to see if they can get away with making an edge lit TV and still market it as a MiniLED because technically… the LEDs are smaller. It's just very deceptive because these aren't being sold as budget models.

Should've gotten a TCL mini-LED instead. Like the QM6K. It's better value at that size and price. Edge lit is not what you want for real HDR performance. You would've needed to bump up to the QNED92A for a good one.

The same thing happened to me. I'm happy with it now, but in the beginning, I was really annoyed that I ended up with an edge lit TV.

If the employee told you it was not edge lit 100% return it and call them out for lying to their customers. That's not acceptable.

I would strongly recommend that you do NOT get the LG QNED85A or the Samsung QN70F. LG and Samsung are both doing something very deceptive this year with their entry level "MiniLED" TVs. The LG QNED85A and Samsung QN70F are marketed as MiniLED but they are actually both Edge Lit LEDs.

Pretty sure I've seen people getting the B5 for 1k$ at costco or LG store. It's a far better tv. The qned85 shouldn't even be an option.

Return it and then go to Costco and get the TCL QM6K Pro for the same price.

it's not a good tv, no matter the price. No 75" in that price is going to be good. Get the QM751 instead.

Either get a smaller LG B5 for the same price or go for a TCL Mini-LED. The only TVs LG are really competitive with is the OLEDs.

After reading through specs of this TV everywhere, especially the 85A model which replaced the old 85 and 85T model, I still cannot find any definitive evidence of Edge Lighting. If it really is, then that is disgustingly deceptive marketing and I hate it.

Return it and get another TV which is mini led. I used to work for LG. And I find these low-end QNED tvs a scam. Edge-lit TVs are bad.

I have the QNED85 evo 2025 86inch and it's awful but I went from 55inch C1 to this tv as moved to bigger livingroom and didnt think 77inch would be big enough. Blooming is incredible bad on dark scenes. Color and brightness is great tho if all you do is watch cartoons get it lol.

I almost bought one of these LG, I really wanted an LG, and since I couldn't get the OLED I went for mini LED and LG and its marketing almost scammed me. These TVs have 6 local dimming zones, to give you an idea, the 50" Hisense u6 has 128 zones. What a shame, I wanted an LG so much, but with this trick they lost a customer.

My mom got fooled. She wanted something a little more affordable, so I told her about mini led and told her to lmk before she buys the tv, but she went and bought it without me knowing and she went with the 85a. When I found out, it was already past the return period, so she's stuck with it now. She paid like $700 for it too. It's bs.

I have one...it is edge lit. The viewing angle is bad. I am not a fan of the anti-reflective coating that has been applied. As far as being mini LED, that is up in the air. The base research I have done revealed that it is actually a QNED70A with a new housing. The design/power hook up is awful. It has been placed in the center of the housing, and you have to "bend" the power cord to get it seated properly. They even supplied a "twist tie" to help secure it.

Yes, do not buy it. My parents just got one. I'm watching it now and it's complete trash. Picture quality is horrible. Upscaling is non existent. Forget about sports. Look into TCL. QM7K.

I bought this TV but the 55" version with a 6 year guarantee. I'm happy with the picture quality it's ok, better than my Samsung. Yeah it's a budget TV but we can't all afford OLED.

75 inches is still 75 inches. Size trumps backlight technology for the first TV glow-up. Enjoy your new beast; no regrets needed!

Technically the employee wasn't lying they are classified as mini LED, it's based on the size of the LED not the backlight configuration. But I get it, you thought it was full array and it's not, still a good tv though.

The only thing I was able to find is that the 100" version is the only one that is different. All other sizes — 86, 75, 65, 55, 50 — get 'Advanced Local Dimming', not precision dimming.
