Summary

The LG UA77 (UA7700) is an entry-level 4K smart TV positioned for budget-conscious buyers who just want a functional screen for streaming and casual viewing. Reddit's enthusiast community is largely dismissive of it, citing its non-quantum dot panel, lack of local dimming, and weak picture quality relative to competitors in the same price range. Actual owners who picked it up at Costco or Sam's Club report a satisfying everyday experience — it looks fine for kids' movies, streaming, and general use. The gap in expectations between TV hobbyists and everyday viewers is stark here, and the UA77 sits squarely in the "good enough for most people, unacceptable for enthusiasts" zone. If picture quality is your top priority, Reddit will steer you elsewhere; if you just need a big screen that works, users report it delivers.

Pros

  • VRR support and a Gen8 processor give it an edge over older entry-level LG models like the UT8000, making it usable for casual gaming
  • Dolby Atmos support built-in, which is uncommon at this price tier and pairs well with a soundbar
  • webOS 25 and the Magic Remote are genuinely well-liked, especially in Costco bundles where the remote is included
  • 86-inch size available at Sam's Club for around $850 with a 3-year warranty, making it one of the more cost-effective large-format options
  • Casual owners — families with kids who stream all day — consistently report satisfaction, with one user rating it an 8.2/10 for bedroom use despite low review site scores
  • Pairs well with external streaming sticks like Apple TV or Onn Google TV boxes, which bypass the laggy native interface entirely

Cons

  • No quantum dot panel means noticeably worse color volume compared to TCL QM6K, Hisense QLED, or even older LG QNED models at similar prices
  • No local dimming results in poor contrast in dark scenes — a core weakness that enthusiast subreddits cite consistently
  • Only 3 HDMI ports, which is limiting for a TV being used with a receiver, console, and streaming device simultaneously
  • HDMI ARC compatibility issues reported with older receivers like the Onkyo SR308, causing frustrating setup loops
  • The native webOS interface is described as laggy compared to Sony's platform, and multiple users recommend bypassing it with an external box
  • Competes directly with better-specced options at the same price — Hisense QLED models beat it on pure picture quality, and LG's own OLED C-series from prior years can be found used for similar money

The HDMI ARC Setup Is a Headache

Multiple users reported difficulty getting the LG UA77 to communicate properly with older AV receivers via HDMI ARC. The issue seems tied to ARC compatibility quirks on older hardware, and the fix often involves factory resets and firmware checks — not exactly plug-and-play.

Enthusiasts Say No, Casual Buyers Say It's Fine

The disconnect on Reddit is real: power users in buying guide subs call it "hot trash" and redirect people to TCL or Hisense, while actual owners who grabbed it from Costco report it as a solid everyday TV for streaming and family use. The right answer depends entirely on who's watching.

It's a Floor Model at Best Buy for a Reason

One Reddit thread noted that Best Buy had the same UA77 model displayed in three different sizes simultaneously — a move that makes more sense as a vendor-paid shelf presence play than a product showcase. It's a volume seller, not a flagship, and Reddit treats it accordingly.

I ended up getting the LG UA77 as it was on sale and the ratings looked better than the samsung, and it came with the extra features like dolby atmos and magic remote from costco.

the UA7700 is the newer model, but both are essentially the same entry level models. Spec wise, any differences are negligible. As far as I can tell the only noticeable difference is the frame design. The UA7700 is technically better, but side-by-side they are basically identical.

Choose the UA7700 if you want: Better processing power (Gen8), VRR support (smoother gaming), Dolby Atmos audio, Copilot/AI chat and webOS 25 features.

any TV interface is going to be garbage especially if youre going to use youtube, plex fubo etc. the tvs just dont have the processor to handle it. Found pairing it up with a apple tv works that better no lag etc.

yea that is very true, thats why i think people should care more about how the picture looks when shopping for one of these cheaper tvs so they can pair with an apple tv

You know an Onn googletv streaming box is only like $30 right....it's really fast and easy to use with any TV. Picking a TV for it's interface is just really unwise. The picture and technology is way more important.

Hi there, we went with the above model. Ratings site absolutely was abysmal, but I'm not sure why.. it's a solid tv (for a bedroom in this scenario.) I would NOT give it a 4.9/10, and lean closer to a 8.2/10. It's a laggy interface, but I'm conditioned to our Sony that is rather snappy.

The UA77 is a higher tier of quality than the UA7050, so the UA7050 is eliminated right off the bat. $400 is a reduced price for this tv. The Hisense though has Quantum Dots, which is better technology than the standard backlighting in the UA77, so the Hisense wins, at least as far as picture quality. The UA77 has a better processor, for better motion playing video games, but for most people this is lower priority than picture quality. I'd go with Hisense.

You're comparing a Hisense Quantum display against LG models without the quantum dot technology. Get a used LG QNED or OLED

6ft brand new high speed cable. Yeah from doing some digging and my recent experience ARC seems like a pain. At least I'm very well acquainted with the tv and receiver now

My family doesn't really care. I have 2 OLEDs, this is a family room tv that gets left on static images for hours and hours. If it has VRR/Dolby and a decent UI, wouldn't this be an 'okay' purchase?

UT8000 is slightly newer but not that many improvements, slightly better processor and OS. Unless UT8000 is significantly discounted, UA7700 is fine.

The UT8000 is $40 cheaper. That is what is confusing me. What makes the UA7700 cost $40 more?
