Summary

The Samsung Q80D is a mid-range QLED that earns a polarizing reception on Reddit — genuine fans exist, but the TV community broadly warns against it. Owners who paid around $700-$900 tend to be satisfied with the picture quality and brightness, especially in bright rooms where OLED struggles. The core Reddit consensus is that the Q80D is overpriced for what it offers: competitors like the TCL QM7, LG B4 OLED, and Sony X90L beat it at similar or lower price points. It's a TV that works fine if you snag it on a deep discount, but hard to justify at full retail.

Pros

  • Strong brightness and anti-glare performance makes it one of the better QLED options for sun-drenched living rooms where OLED would wash out
  • Direct Full Array backlight with local dimming produces solid contrast for an LCD — reviewers noted it beats 'any other LCD TV in its class' for backlight control
  • 120Hz gaming support on 55" and larger sizes makes it viable for PS5 and Switch at 4K — users reported no major ghosting or blur issues at 120fps
  • Snappy, responsive Tizen OS with a clean UI — owners praise it for ease of use even if they criticize the default smart hub layout
  • Available in large sizes (up to 85") at steep clearance discounts — users snagged the 85" for as low as $600 at Sam's Club, which changes the value equation significantly

Cons

  • The 50" model is locked to 60Hz instead of 120Hz — a critical detail Best Buy employees and even Samsung's own spec pages bury, making it a bad buy for console gamers in that size
  • Hardware reliability concerns: at least one owner had two consecutive units develop LED backlight failure (white dot patterns) within weeks — pointing to a potential build quality issue in the 85" model
  • Reddit's TV buying communities have an automated bot warning against the Q80D, calling it out alongside Samsung's budget lineup — a signal that the community consensus is firmly negative on value
  • Upscaling of lower-resolution and HD content is reportedly poor — one owner called it 'terrible' on HD broadcast and digital air content
  • Gray uniformity issues reported on some units — visible LED zone bleeding in certain screen regions, especially noticeable in the 50" size
  • At full retail ($1000-$1800 depending on size), the LG B4 OLED, TCL QM7, and Sony X90L all offer objectively better specs — the Q80D is hard to recommend unless heavily discounted

The 50" Has a Hidden 60Hz Problem Nobody Warns You About

Buy the Q80D in 50 inches and you're getting a 60Hz panel — not the 120Hz advertised for larger sizes. Multiple Reddit users flagged this spec buried by retailers, making it a bad fit for PS5 or fast-paced gaming despite looking like a gaming-ready TV on the box.

Reddit Auto-Bans It — But Owners Who Paid Less Actually Like It

The r/4kTV AutoModerator fires off a 'don't buy' warning on every Q80D thread, and the community backs it up at full price. But users who grabbed it under $700 on clearance consistently report satisfaction — suggesting the TV isn't bad, just overpriced for what it is.

Two Dead Units in Two Months: One Owner's Q80D Nightmare

An 85" Q80D owner reported identical LED backlight failures on both their original unit and its Costco replacement — both developing white dot patterns within weeks of purchase. It's an isolated case, but it reflects a broader Reddit anxiety about Samsung QLED build quality at this tier.

Id recommend the 48 LG B4 and the S70TR soundbar combo. That puts you right around $940 pre tax. It's an OLED so it would be a much better tv.

That's a great 50 inch TV, you'd be hard pressed to find something that offers those specs in that size. Most mini LEDs and direct full array start at 55.

If you're on a budget, Hisense and TCL… lower tier Samsung, LG, etc are overpriced for what they are. Their higher end units are good though.

They are both crap. Get a TCL QM7 75" instead for $1400 — it's way better than both of these TVs!

Around 50 inches the LG 48 OLED cannot be beat for the $550-$650 sale price. I'm two years deep on my A2 48 and love it.

For real though. This is a BAD tv. Most Samsungs are now. They are trading on their name. They are beat in quality and price at almost every point by LG, Sony, TCL. There's a reason a big warning pops up when you post about most Samsung TVs.

Tech Radar said they were blown away by the Q80D's backlight control, which results in deep black levels and strong contrast, and said it beats any other LCD TV in its class. The Q80D gets a lot of hate in this sub, IMO most folks haven't used the TV to know. I bought the 65" version for $900 bucks and was very pleased with it for that price. I would not spend more than $1000 on it.

Go LG 48" B4 and whatever soundbar you like. Way better TV and it's not even close.

Another issue I just noticed is that the most recent app you last had open will open automatically if you don't do anything within a minute or two. It would be nice if it just waited for you to click on something.

I recently bought for my parents Q80D 50". The TV is nice, but not perfect. I directly tested it for pixel/picture issues and I found (so far) - 1 dead sub red pixel and the gray uniformity is not great. I'm seeing spots where I can see the LED zones. Otherwise it's very snappy and pleasant to use.

What about in bright rooms? Lots of peeps buying the LG B4 OLED and disappointed due to reflections which can ruin the experience. I am thinking of QLED Samsung 80D or OLED LG B4. Buying for a sim rig so will be playing racing games on it in a very bright room.

I currently have QLED and the image is great. What's the biggest difference with OLED?

You mentioned the room is bright and you have a big window casting reflections right? OLED is terrible for that usage.

That's what I was thinking, everywhere I was reading this is the biggest issue. OLED in bright rooms doesn't do well.

Get LG C4 or G4. Live a good life.

Got the Q80D for my parents. It's quite underwhelming compared to an LG OLED. It also does a terrible job with smoothing/upscaling low res/and even HD digital air contents. It's snappy, and the color seems pretty good after calibration. It definitely feels very mid mid-range.

A 48 inch LG OLED B4 ($800) is nearly the same price as the 50 inch Q80D ($1000). The only reason why I went with the Q80D is OLED doesn't do as well in bright room.

So I got the Q80D from Samsung.com, and I believe it's my favorite TV that I've owned. I've owned the Q60B, the TCL 5 series in 2023 and 6 series in 2023 which was their highest end model I believe, and the Samsung QN90C, and I like the Q80D better than them all. The sound on the Q80D is awesome, the blacks and contrast are great, and the brightness is very nice.

People are talking about the B4 a lot which will give you a nicer image overall, yes, but the Samsung is brighter, handles reflections better and has a slightly higher color volume. Which one is better depends on you and where you're putting it. Samsung will withstand the sun better if it has to. LG is prettier.

Have a 55 in Q80D in my living room. Had to adjust the picture settings but otherwise excellent picture quality.

The Q80D in the 50" size is 60hz, all other sizes it's 120hz. Still a good buy in my opinion, but worth noting.

I definitely wouldn't describe Samsung as better. As an ex home theatre agent, my go-to recommendation for tech illiterate folk was Samsung because the UI was straight forward, but if you want quality I will always recommend LG.

They seem to be the exact same models with the QN80D having better speakers and being called a miniLED. TCL QM8 or Sony X90L would both be better choices.

I've had this exact same tv for 7 months now and wow. I game and love movies and this tv really has that 120 hz during gamemode. 4K movies — it's really the perfect tv in my opinion. I was able to snag a $750 deal for it during Black Friday.

It's on clearance for $600 at my local Sam's Club in the 85" version. I'm going to get it tomorrow if still available. They had it listed for $999 a week ago.

Yes the QLED Q80D is a great TV. I'm not really fond of the TV speakers — I mean still great, very loud, but I just prefer better bass. Besides that, great TV, still have it, still use it everyday.

I usually turn people away from the Q70/Q80. The Q70D is an edge lit display that offers decent image quality, but its gradient handling leads to a noisy image and motion handling isn't great either. Panning shots in games or darker film content will show a dark smear effect on moving objects.

Neither of those are good. Read the automod. Get TCL QM751 or QM851 instead. Or even better, X90L.

Samsung 85" Q80D owner here, and extremely dissatisfied. I bought this TV in November during a big sale from Costco, and it was fantastic for about a month. By the middle of December it had developed regular white dot patterns with dark spots in between. Once the dots came, they never went away.

Ugh. Definitely going to skip Samsung next round, which is disappointing as I own numerous other products from them and have always had good results.

I'll bet anything that many people are having similar problems with this model. I wouldn't be surprised if they refund many or all buyers. Just my opinion as an old time TV repairman.

If you ever watch movies with the lights off, you'll regret not buying an OLED. The perfect blacks on an OLED make the black bars on letterboxed films disappear. Even the best QLEDs with mini LED and local dimming will have light bleed into those black bars.

I've had a Q70 since 2021, the picture is still really nice and I can see it clearly during the day. IMO it's a really nice and vivid display.

There are better options for TVs. If you have a really bright room, I would suggest a W-OLED TV like the S90D or go with a good mini LED. The soundbar with the 8-inch sub would make it my go-to — it's a little over budget but this combo is honestly the best one I've seen in that price range.

TCL and even Hisense got a bad rap when they first came out, but the QM7-8 and Hisense U7-8 can hang with just about any of the top end TVs. Is it a few thousand dollars that much better? I don't think so, especially if you're on some type of budget.

Everyone is jumping to the LG B4 but I would ask yourself some questions before hopping on that train. Do you frequently watch during the day? The B4 is significantly dimmer than other OLEDs and certainly dimmer than LED TVs. Do you get a lot of direct sunlight in your room? The B4 doesn't handle reflections the best.

Definitely do the 48 in LG B4. 120 hz vs 60 hz! And cheaper.
