Summary

The Samsung Q8F 2025 is a budget-to-mid-range QLED TV that Reddit has largely written off as a poor value pick. It's an edge-lit panel with no local dimming, which leads to widespread complaints about clouding, blooming, and uneven backlighting — issues that users across multiple threads consistently flag after purchase. The Q4 AI processor gets occasional praise for image processing, and QLED does bring solid color volume and burn-in immunity versus OLED, but these positives rarely outweigh the panel's core limitations. Reddit's consensus is blunt: for the same money or less, TCL and Hisense mini-LED options deliver meaningfully better picture quality.

Pros

  • Supports 120Hz (and in some configurations 144Hz) refresh rate, making it usable for gaming and fast-motion content where higher-end panels would cost significantly more
  • QLED panel provides 100% color volume with Quantum Dot technology, producing vibrant and saturated colors especially in well-lit rooms
  • No burn-in risk, making it a safer long-term choice for mixed-use environments like restaurants or offices compared to OLED
  • Q4 AI processor provides noticeably better image processing than competing budget TVs — one store comparison noted it outperformed Sony and LG options at a similar price point
  • AirSlim design is well-regarded aesthetically, and Samsung's Tizen OS with built-in Alexa and Samsung Vision AI adds smart TV functionality without extra hardware

Cons

  • Edge-lit backlight with zero local dimming zones creates severe clouding and dirty screen effect — multiple users report returning units only to encounter the same issue on replacements
  • TCL QM6K delivers full-array local dimming and better overall picture quality at a lower price point, making the Q8F a hard sell on value
  • HDR performance is weak without local dimming — highlights bloom and dark scenes lose all shadow detail, undermining the 4K HDR marketing
  • Reliability concerns: one user reported 2 out of 4 restaurant units experienced burnt-out motherboards, and software updates on Samsung TVs have caused audio and performance issues across the lineup
  • No RF/antenna input on some models, limiting compatibility with basic cable setups — a surprise omission not prominently listed in retailer specs
  • Compared to the QN70F at a ~$100 premium, the Q8F offers inferior blacks and worse glare handling, making the upgrade an easy call for most buyers

Bought It, Returned It, Bought It Again — Same Clouding Problem

At least one Reddit user went through two Q8F units hoping for a manufacturing fluke, only to find identical clouding in dark scenes both times. The edge-lit design isn't a defect — it's the product.

Samsung's Brand Name Is Doing Heavy Lifting Here

The Q8F sits in a price range where TCL and Hisense mini-LED panels consistently outperform it on contrast and local dimming. Redditors argue you're paying a brand premium, not a performance one.

The 120Hz Rate Saves It for One Specific Buyer

Gamers on a tight budget who prioritize refresh rate over picture depth find some value here — but even that crowd gets nudged toward TCL's QM6K, which offers both high refresh and better backlight control.

I'll be honest, none of these TVs are good and I would recommend looking at TCL or Hisense as you'll get better performance and picture quality over these three. One of the reason why (besides the Q7F) is that Q6F and Q8F is an edge lit display. RTINGs did a great video on why these types of TVs should be avoided because their life span is terrible, and frankly the picture quality isn't good.

Stay away from q8f bought 4 tvs for our restaurant and 2 have burnt out motherboards already. Shell out abit more money for the qn70's we switched to those and they like similar picture but way less glare and that is worth it to us, also blacks look darker so that a plus too!

Don't buy Q8F, I bought this model 2 month ago and it has cloudy effect at corners it is noticeable when you are watching movie in darker room with dark scene. Even i got refund and i bought same model second time because i thought it might be manufacture defect but i experienced same cloudy effect in second model.

It's a pretty bad TV. But also if you put it on it's feet it leans backwards

I would not look at the Samsung Q8F. It's not a good TV, it's an edge lit display which is dreadful on it's own but the overall picture quality is terrible. If you are looking for a great deal, and actually want a great TV. I would look at the Panasonic W95A. I bought it for my parents back in July, and it's actually a really beautiful display. The black levels is deep, the color is vibrant, and the picture processing is really great.

Samsung waters down a lot of their sets, and they have no features or performance that make it worth your money. TCL QM6K, TCL QM7K, or even the LG QNED 85 are better choices.

For edge lit and no local dimming, I'd pass.

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews with Samsung and the Qn70f bc of it being edge lit but I knew I had to consider the direct reflection

I was shocked to see just how bad the image processing is on anything other than the Samsungs with the Q4 AI chip. A 4K HDR movie clip demo at the store on all other 2024/2025 entry level TV's around this price range (and some a fair bit higher - Sony, LG etc.): white and skin tone areas looked very flat and lifeless compared to the Samsung.

I have the QM6K pro and Q7F. Samsung does much better with sports and image processing. TCL is great for movies

i told my brother not to buy this horseshit TV. Its really bad marketing but they keep selling low end TVs that even under perform in picture quality compared to older tech. QLEds are not all the same. You are buying a low quality TV with no dimming zones, Panel control is non existent as it's not a priority for low end TV with dirty screen, horrible hdr. Not fine tuned at all.

If you can still return it, just do so. It's a terrible TV and there are far better units in that price range (look at rtings website). There is no local dimming and it's a bottom of the barrel panel, as a result obtaining warranty is a waste of your time because it's low quality dogshit and they are poorly made. Get a TCL mini LED, literally any model is better than this, or if you want light years better, any OLED such as the LG B series will put this to shame.

Q8f is a TV that has high refresh rate. That's it. Beyond that it's a very sub-par TV. Even a Qm6k from TCL is a much Superior TV for less.

I'm more concerned that you say you did any amount of research, and ended up with a non local dimming qled. So you basically decided you wanted a bottom of the barrel panel even after doing all the research?

Was that supposed to be uniform black? Boy, that's probably as bad as bad panels can be.

Yep normal, and this is the exact same kinda bullshit I hated, and spent some proper money on an OLED, and I'll never go back. My Apple TV boots up and in a dark room I see not a single thing other than a pure white tv symbol against the purest of black.

The 85qn90f has worse backlighting. I sent back the 3rd one. Two of the three were used and Samsung sold them as new. The official Samsung webshop refused to replace them, so I won't buy any more Samsung TVs.

No, these are qleds, so burn-in isn't a factor. Even Oled TV's shouldn't experience burn in within the first 10 years unless you do nothing but watch the news all day.

We have their top range QN90F, which needed a repair and change of the motherboard just 2.5 months in. It was due to a faulty update that caused audio issues and sluggish Youtube app performance on our almost new tv in less than an hour right after it was automatically downloaded. The fact that they then pulled the update is strong evidence that there was a problem with it.
