Summary

The Samsung QN85D is a mid-to-upper-tier Neo QLED TV that attracts buyers who need high brightness for well-lit rooms and want to avoid OLED. Reddit sentiment is generally positive but tempered — most owners are satisfied, though there's a persistent undercurrent of 'you could do better for the money.' The TV is frequently compared to alternatives like the Sony X90L, TCL QM8, and even Samsung's own QN90D, with the QN85D often landing in a middle ground. A notable source of community confusion is the panel lottery — some units ship with a VA panel, others with an ADS panel depending on size — which has become a recurring caveat in buying advice. Overall, it's a solid pick at the right price, but buyers who pay close to $1,600 at 75 inches tend to experience second thoughts.

Pros

  • Mini LED backlighting (Neo QLED) provides meaningfully better contrast and black levels compared to standard QLED or edge-lit panels like the Q70D and Q80D
  • Excellent peak brightness makes it one of the stronger performers in bright, sunlit living rooms where OLEDs struggle
  • Strong gaming credentials — low input lag and HDMI 2.1 support make it a capable choice for PS5 and PC gaming
  • VA panel variants (common in smaller sizes) deliver native contrast ratios above 5000:1, reducing the need for aggressive local dimming
  • The QNX1D — Samsung's functionally identical web-store variant — can be found at significantly lower prices through EPP/EDU discounts and cashback stacking, sometimes under $800 out of pocket for the 85 inch
  • Users who own it side-by-side with QM8 report the QN85D handles motion better, with one owner explicitly saying they regret buying the QM8 over it

Cons

  • No Dolby Vision support — Samsung uses HDR10+ exclusively, which is a dealbreaker for some buyers with Dolby-heavy streaming libraries
  • Panel lottery is real: larger sizes (65 inch and above) may ship with an ADS panel instead of VA, resulting in noticeably worse contrast — and Samsung doesn't disclose this upfront
  • At full retail around $1,500-$1,600 for 75 inches, it loses ground to alternatives — the TCL QM8 at $1,500 is considered a full tier up by multiple Reddit commenters
  • Only 160 local dimming zones (at 65 inch), fewer than competitors like the TCL QM7K at similar price points, leading to visible blooming on bright objects against dark backgrounds
  • The more reflective screen surface causes glare issues in very bright rooms — ironic given that's a primary reason buyers choose it over OLED
  • Buyers frequently report post-purchase regret at full price, with many wishing they had waited for deeper discounts or considered the QN90D instead

The Panel Lottery Nobody Warned You About

Depending on screen size and production batch, your QN85D might ship with a VA or an ADS panel — and Samsung won't tell you which. The VA version offers contrast above 5000:1; the ADS version is noticeably inferior. This has become one of the most-cited caveats in Reddit buying threads.

Great TV, Wrong Price

At $1,280–$1,600 retail, the QN85D sits in an awkward spot where the TCL QM8 undercuts it or matches it at a higher performance tier. Reddit consensus is clear: wait for a sale or use discount programs to get it under $1,000, at which point the value proposition becomes hard to beat.

Motion Handling Beats the QM8 — According to Owners of Both

At least one Reddit user who owns both an 85 inch QM8 and a 75 inch QN85D says the QM8 is a 'blurry mess' without motion smoothing, while the QN85D handles motion cleanly. It's a single data point but it cuts against the mainstream spec-sheet narrative that the QM8 is the obvious upgrade.

QN85D is better than the X90L.

I ordered it because I got a ridiculous deal and otherwise wanted a bright TV that would be aces for gaming and sports. I'm aware Samsung has QC diminishing reputation but I'm just not that nervous.

Don't buy LG unless it's an OLED, don't buy TCL if you can afford anything else. Buy a Sony!

Found the Samsung QN85D 85" for $1,405.70. This seems like too good a deal to pass up right?

No modern panels will likely last 8 years unfortunately.

qm8 has the worst motion I've ever seen on a TV. Main TV upstairs is a 85 qm8 and I couldn't regret my decision more. In the game room we have a 75 qn85d, it doesn't get as bright as the qm8 but believe me when I say there's no setting to fix the terrible motion on the qm8. I'd go qn85d.

For $1600 I think you can do better in the 75" range, judging on recent sales. The QM7 75" is like $1000 right now.

The image processing is much better in the X90L and better color. The X90L exceeds the QN85D in most specs on paper and is vastly superior in real world image viewing.

The QN1EF is edge lit with mini led. Mini led should be back lit. It's a marketing gimmick from Samsung.

I just bought this TV from Costco in Canada, it was/is on sale. The extended warranty here is provided by Asurion.

The QM8 is a better TV than the QN85D by a decent margin I believe, it's like a full tier up. So between a 75" QM8 for $1500 and a 75" QN85D for $1600, I'm taking the QM8 100% of the time.

I have 85" QN85D (swapped by Samsung for QNX1D) and it is not good in well lit room.

Samsung. I was so disappointed with the TCL. Can't even describe. Could not watch ANY type of content without constantly playing around with the picture settings. There was ALWAYS something wrong: stutter, lag, black smearing, cloudy dark scenes. Thankfully I had the chance to return it. Got a Samsung oled s90d and very happy for now.

Seriously debating the 55" QN85D since I can get it for $710. I've had a Samsung 55" UHD 4k TV since 2017. TV had survived multiple home moves and has never had any issues whatsoever. 55" for $710 is almost too hard to pass up.

The Samsung QN85D stands out with its Neo QLED technology, featuring mini-LED backlighting for improved contrast and black levels. Both models have the same processor and features, but the QN85D's Quantum Matrix Technology adds extra value.

After a week I'm very happy with my purchase. I found movie mode and so that turned the vivid down a bit. Great deal at Costco for the 55". $400 less than the X90L.

I have the 55in QN85 from 2022. Picture is great so I wouldn't worry. You got a great TV. Especially for that price for an 85in.

It has a more mirror-like screen, so in bright rooms you'll get a lot of reflection off of the screen depending on where your windows and lights are situated in relation to the TV. This is true of most of the low to mid-range TVs.

Got the 75 inch QN90D on a good deal and finally got it up and going. I've only used after dusk, but the picture is elite. Coming from 65 inch Sony x85j, which I was also happy with. This appears much better.

Of these three models I would get the QN85D. I usually turn people away from the Q70/Q80. The Q70D is an edge lit display that offers decent image quality, but its gradient handling leads to a noisy image and its motion handling isn't great either. Panning shots in games or darker film content will show a dark smear effect.

The difference between QLED and Neo QLED is Neo QLED has Mini LED backlight which means better contrast and blacks. Definitely get the QN85D over the Q77D. Better screen, better processor, better audio.

I just received the Q77D and am deeply impressed. Crisp colors, deep blacks, quick responses from TV. Couldn't be happier. My frame of reference is an uncle who has an OLED Samsung TV and I honestly don't see the difference. Besides that OLED would not do well in our living room as it's very bright. QLED is better for that scenario.

On dimming zones in this Samsung model — it has unexpectedly (for Samsung) good VA panel with nice native contrast (5000+:1) that explains that fewer dimming zones are required to provide decent contrast.

Caved for the 65 inch TCL. Appropriately sized TV is still better than a smaller but better TV and I'm enjoying it since the TCL ones still a value for money great TV. The only thing that would be worth the tradeoff for me would be an OLED.

I got 85" QNX1D (which Samsung swapped for QN85D automatically) for $1,070.99 after EEP discount plus 10% customer service coupon, then stacked Capital One 27% cashback and Workatperk 15% cashback. My total out of pocket is between $700-$800.

I'd rather buy a Sony mini-LED or LG OLED.

If the QN85D isn't a terrible choice, I will probably go for that. The Bravia 7 would be fantastic but the price difference pushes it out of the frame.

Are you ok with purchasing open box? There's some nice open box deals on the S90D 77 inch OLED — I picked one up for $1070 just today.

The QNX1D was kind of thrown into the lineup as a filler model. The QN85D has been there for years. It's considered a very good TV and I wouldn't be disappointed in the slightest.

I think you should stretch your budget a bit and get a Samsung S90D. I was in the same boat — torn between TCL, Samsung QN85D, and Sony X90L. But when I saw the S90D QD-OLED which was only a bit more than the Sony, I just took it.
