Summary

The Samsung QN90D is a 2024 Mini-LED TV that earns consistent praise as a bright-room powerhouse, particularly for sports, daytime viewing, and large-screen gaming. Reddit sentiment is broadly positive among actual owners, who highlight its extreme brightness and strong anti-glare performance as its defining strengths. The main caveats are a panel lottery at some sizes and regions (VA vs. ADS depending on market and screen size), Tizen OS quirks that frustrate even fans, and a persistent debate about whether it justifies its premium over cheaper alternatives in the lineup. It sits squarely in a competitive segment where OLED alternatives pull at buyers who do a lot of evening/dark-room watching.

Pros

  • Exceptional brightness output for bright rooms — users frequently describe it as overkill-level intense, with the 85" model hitting around 2,100 nits peak at 10%, making it one of the brightest Mini-LEDs in its class
  • Strong anti-glare and reflection handling — widely considered best-in-class for glossy panel TVs, with Samsung's WHVA coating diffusing light sources rather than creating a sharp mirror effect
  • 144Hz panel on the QN90D vs. 120Hz on the cheaper QN85D makes it a meaningful upgrade for PC gaming with high-end GPUs like the RTX 4090
  • Excellent as a large PC monitor — the 43" variant in particular is rated by RTINGS as the second-best TV/monitor at that size, with users reporting superb text clarity at 150% scaling and minimal ABL compared to OLED
  • 7 years of software updates confirmed by Samsung, a clear advantage over older QN90 models whose support has already expired
  • Strong value at sale prices — users frequently report picking up the 85" for $1,500–$1,800 from Costco and Sam's Club, sometimes with a 5-year extended warranty included

Cons

  • Panel type lottery depending on region and screen size — the 55" in the UK has been reported with ADS/IPS panels causing noticeably worse blooming, while North American units use VA; Samsung does not disclose this upfront
  • Tizen OS has visible annoyances: the persistent energy consumption warning when changing color profiles, removal of the bottom dock in favor of a full home screen, and occasional stuttering during navigation
  • Local dimming transitions are a real weakness — slow pixel response and visible zone blooming are noted on rtings and confirmed by users, particularly in complex dark scenes
  • Sound issues reported on some units — one owner described audio becoming completely muffled after repeated power cycles, with Samsung techs confirming a firmware fix has yet to arrive
  • Motion handling disappoints users coming from OLED — judder on fast scenes is a recurring complaint, though some users report no issues; depends heavily on content source and settings
  • Value proposition collapses against cheaper lineup siblings: the QN85D (QN1XD) offers higher native contrast (5,537:1 vs. 3,404:1) and wider color gamut at a significant discount, making the QN90D harder to justify unless you specifically need 144Hz

Is the QN90D's Panel Lottery a Deal-Breaker?

Depending on your region and screen size, you might get a VA panel with deep blacks or an ADS/IPS variant with worse blooming. Samsung doesn't advertise which you're getting, and Reddit mods had to pin a dedicated thread explaining the confusion around the QN85D and QN90D panel situation.

The QN90D Is Basically the PC Monitor That Beats OLED for Productivity

Users who do heavy productivity work — IT directors, music engineers, people sharing PCs with family — consistently pick the 43" QN90D over the LG C4 42" specifically to avoid OLED burn-in risk. Multiple owners report using it 9 hours a day with excellent text clarity and no issues.

The $500 Jump from QN85D Makes Less Sense Than Samsung Wants

The cheaper QN85D (QN1XD) actually beats the QN90D in native contrast ratio and color gamut on paper. Reddit users who went through both options overwhelmingly say the QN90D is only worth it for 144Hz gaming — for everyone else, the QN85D is the smarter buy.

You should definitely get the QN90D that is an awesome deal. It is a bright room beast. The bravia9 isn't even close to worth $2100 more, that's laughable. QN90D is one of the best mini led out there.

Sony is better for your usage but it's not 150% better than a QN90D. Get the QN90D.

Don't get the 55" I got it and found out it was IPS-ADS panel instead of VA, blooming was bad.

QN90D is just better TV. With matte screen you lost details/contrast. QN90D has double contrast.

By no means is the qn90d a slouch. 270,000:1 contrast and 2100 peak 10% is still very good.

What Sony is to upscaling is what Samsung is to glare handling. If either of these doesn't work in your room, then nothing will.

I bought the QN90D and it's a great TV. A few niggles though. Tizen OS can get stuttery at times when navigating through the home page. There is no way to enable a bottom of the screen dock with your pinned apps anymore. And there is this absolutely annoying message that pops up warning you of the Energy Consumption when you try to change the colour profile. Otherwise, the display is excellent.

As someone who owns both an 85" QN90B and 83" LG G5: watching general TV, sports, tv shows the QLED holds up really well. Watching movies in a dark room though, with darker more complex scenes, the OLED is so much better.

I can answer your question since i own both a 77 LG G5 and a 85 samsung qn90d. I have direct sunlight with big windows during the day, and the samsung is amazing for that. When visitors see it they say it looks great. And it does. But if i watch the g5 for a couple hours the samsung looks worse.

Samsung does not care about the customer and puts whatever panel they can find into their QN85D and QN90D TVs, which means it's a total lottery.

My main TV is a Sony X95L, which is amazing. But my 50, 55 and 65 QN90's look just as good in the various bright rooms they're in. The main two issues are the WiFi degrading after a few years.

My 85" has been a fantastic set for my very bright living room (windows on 2 sides). Firmware is a touch laggy and the eARC connectivity with my newer Yamaha receiver is a bit flaky (ARC is 100% reliable) but otherwise no problems with my set.

I went with the qn90d because of the 144hz gaming capability even though its a console that will be connected (max 120hz). I do have a PC w/ 4090GPU that can easily do 144hz and occasionally connect the TV for couch gaming.

I also bought an 85QN90D after a few years with a 65X90L. I have not noticed any drop in motion quality and have been really impressed with its performance. Sony still looks good but it cant come close to the blacks of the QN90D.

I have this thing ON 9hrs a day straight. Black levels are excellent even in a dark room. Blooming is minimal. Text clarity superb at 150% scaling. Only thing OLED has over this is motion. This panel is way underrated.

I have only had mine since this Saturday. I have not noticed any stutter, jitter or any issues. I have tested it on Samsung TV, Youtube TV, Netflix, HULU, Prime, Paramount+, Disney+, MAX and i have not found any issue at all.

Wait does it bring you to that stupid app when you hit the home button instead of the bar dock at the bottom? I was over at someone's house and tried it and ABSOLUTELY hated it. Love the dock!

It's. So. Much. Brighter. lol. It's fantastic compared to a c4. I don't recommend the c4. Mini LED or G series all day.

I have a qn90a. I'd never get it again if I could, it's terrible to play games, it has a very poor backlight control that yes, doesn't have blooming but crushes details and have weird discoloration artifacts. My advise: avoid it!

It has poor dimming zone transitions and slow pixel response times. Depending on your use cases, the oleds might be better but come with other issues (abl, black crush, poor brightness).

I just bought the 85" QN90D for $1,999 from Costco plus they included an extended warranty. Couldn't justify spending more for the F.

After a few minutes of watching it, pretty happy with the choice. No need to splurge for the F.

The F sucks when the room goes dim. You watch movies in the evening with glaring bright light? Go with the D.

I ended up choosing the 90d. The qn1xd is by far a better value and if I had the luxury of waiting, I would've gone that route.

Terrible viewing angles. The picture was nice when watching directly from the center but you could see the difference in the 2nd tv right next to you. I dont get the hype around this tv. Very expensive for that quality. I would go for a TLC C7k which is cheaper or go with OLED.

Do not buy the Qn90d. I got a 75" last Feb. Have had a sound issue ever since. If tv is used a few times a day turned on and off then the sound becomes completely muffled. Need to turn up to 60-70 only way to fix it is to do a hard shut down by holding down the power button. Multiple Samsung techs came out to look at it. Said only way to fix is with a software update. That has still yet to occur.

Had a qn90b from 2022 until last week when it met an unfortunate end, replaced with a qn90d. They look the complete same to me. Turns out the qn90d will get 7 years of updates though so thats nice.

The Samsung Q90D would be the better option over the QN90A. The picture processing and upscaling abilities are better, it's brighter and has more dimming zones so the black level and HDR highlights are better.
