Summary

The Samsung The Frame 2024 is a TV that Reddit is genuinely divided on — not because of its concept, but because of its execution. Owners love what it is in theory: a matte, anti-glare panel that displays artwork when not in use and mounts flush to the wall like a real painting. In practice, the 2024 model shipped with significant regressions over previous years, particularly broken HDMI-CEC with Apple TV and a laggy, frustrating Tizen OS. The consensus is clear: buy it if art mode is your primary use case and you're willing to work around its software quirks, but don't expect a great TV experience out of the box.

Pros

  • Matte anti-glare screen is a genuine differentiator — owners in bright, window-heavy rooms consistently call it a game-changer over glossy panels
  • Art mode display quality is impressive for oil paintings and textured artwork, convincing enough to fool guests into thinking it's a real framed piece
  • Flush wall-mount design with the One Connect box keeps the installation clean with a single thin cable, making it ideal for living rooms where aesthetics matter
  • Works well as a secondary display for casual viewing when paired with an external streaming device like Chromecast, where you bypass Tizen entirely
  • Customizable clip-on bezels in colors like Teak, Sand Gold, and Beige let users match the TV to their interior design — a feature no competitor offers at this price

Cons

  • HDMI-CEC integration with Apple TV is broken on the 2024 model — a clear regression from the 2021 and 2022 versions — requiring SmartThings routines, Raspberry Pi scripts, or Alexa IR workarounds just to return to art mode automatically
  • Tizen OS is widely described as one of the worst smart TV interfaces available: laggy, prone to crashes, forces Samsung TV Plus ads on the home screen, and requires a hard reboot to recover from freezes
  • Panel quality control issues reported by multiple users — backlight bleed, clouding, and a milky appearance at lower brightness settings that Samsung support often dismisses as 'normal'
  • Art mode subscription is required to access the full art store; without it, getting your own photos to look realistic on the matte screen requires workarounds, and the white mat overlay looks fake due to brightness bleed
  • Motion smoothing is poorly handled out of the box — judder and stutter during camera panning are common complaints, requiring manual deep-dive into Expert Settings to fix
  • The 2025 model resolves several of these issues (better UI, easier mounting, optional wireless One Connect) making the 2024 a harder sell at current prices

Samsung Broke the One Feature That Made This TV Worth Buying

The whole pitch of The Frame is that it seamlessly transitions into art mode when you're done watching. On the 2024 model, that automatic transition is broken for Apple TV users — a regression from older models — and the community has resorted to Raspberry Pi daemons and IR blasters to fix what Samsung shipped.

It's a Great Painting That Also Happens to Be a Bad TV

The split in this subreddit is consistent: people who use it primarily for art display and wall aesthetics tend to love it, while anyone who expects it to perform like a $1,800 television is repeatedly disappointed. 'Terrible TV. Great artwork that's also a TV' sums up the community verdict in one line.

The Workaround Community Around This TV Is Impressive

Owners have built custom GitHub daemons, Homebridge plugins, SmartThings routines, and Alexa IR workarounds just to replicate functionality that the 2021 model had natively. The fact that a dedicated subreddit exists primarily to share these fixes says a lot about where Samsung left its users.

Welcome! The worst part is, if you want a new TV, you'll still consider another Frame

How in the world are you not complaining about the remote? WORST REMOTE EVER. Every time I so much as look at it wrong, it tries to play SpongeBob SquarePants.

I bought the 2024 Frame for the artwork and to have all the smart apps I'd need without needing a Chromecast or Apple TV. Then I met Tizen, FML. Straight back to chromecast.

Mine is in art mode 99% of the time. On that rare chance I use it for something else, every time I immediately think 'I need to connect a chromecast or Apple TV to this'. Tizen is one of the worst user experiences I think I've encountered.

For me, there's no way I would get an older one with a shiny screen. The anti-glare screen sealed the deal. Especially for viewing art and photos, it isn't always going to be seen in a darkened room.

Another strategy is to put an actual frame around the TV and skip the mat entirely. Artwork shows up larger and even more believable.

The hardware is beautiful. The software is just really disappointing.

The product owner of tizen should go to a monastery where they take a vow of silence for their remaining days and get to ponder the pile of shit that they put out on the market.

We just got the 2024 version for our living room with massive windows right opposite the TV. I'm a shift worker and can finally watch something when I come home in the morning without excessive glare! Definitely a game changer.

I have an 85" frame and run Apple TV. I think it works great. I don't see any reason to not buy it if you can afford it. I love my frame tv.

Yes it is worst user interface and inoperably with other devices imaginable but I love the low profile and pictures displayed.

Really happy with mine (2024 edition). I needed a matte screen since the TV lives in a very sunny spot in my house. Agree with the comments about the motion smoothing, but once I was able to get those settings straightened out, no complaints.

I honestly haven't had hardly any problems with the operating system. I got my 55" in Sept. One time I had to unplug it to restart it because the ESPN app wasn't working. The art in the regular art section has always worked fine.

As a new owner I'll give you my why not buy: the art mode is disappointing as it is a subscription service you pay for monthly. Many people, like myself have had problems with the subscription service — it doesn't recognize the subscription even when you have one. You need the subscription to even access the frame settings.

I doubt Samsung will read this. Now being in IT I suspect their tech teams do not talk to each other when it comes to the Frame and other interconnected devices. In other words, I think firmware can help but the foundation seems broken. My 2020 model works fine and will not 'upgrade' until I hear these issues are resolved.

You forgot to mention the absolute trash no-gap wall-mount that it comes with. Terrible. Also, it seems with every software update Samsung forces the turn on setting to go directly to their horseshit TV app. I have to turn that off in the settings EVERY time there is a software update. Just horrible. I hate this TV.

I have had the exact same experience with my '24 vs my '21 Frame. I keep checking for a new '24 OS, as I use both my TVs with Apple TV units, and the newer model doesn't allow access to art mode with the ATV remote. You can work around with automations in SmartThings, either way the CEC is temperamental so you always need the Samsung remote near you. Really frustrating.

I have the 2024 model. I love it. The picture quality is excellent once you turn off the stupid dynamic settings. One minor complaint about the software design in that it forces Samsung TV Plus on us and when you remove it, it has a notice about restoring it right in the middle of the home screen.

I just got a 2024 55" to display my photos with. I am mostly happy with it. The picture is nice, though it has somewhat limited viewing angles. I still have lots of complaints, mainly about the software. It glitches often, lacks needed features, and is overall hard to use. I wonder if Samsung actually ever used it??

I have faced hell lots of trouble with the Frame TV and especially with Samsung. Out of blue, the panel got irreparable issue and right after 5 month of warranty lapse. Worst part was the Samsung and its customer service.

I have all the same problems with the 2024 frame. We ended up unplugging the Apple TV and using native apps, which has helped but it's not what we wanted.

Do not get the 2024 frame. It has crashed repeatedly with Apple TV, to the point we had to disconnect it to use the TV. We haven't been able to access All Settings for months. Crashes sometimes anyway. Coming back from art mode to the UI? Doesn't restore brightness. Everything about the 2024 has been a downgrade.

I have the 65" 2024 and the 55" 2025 model. The UI in the 2024 is so buggy compared to the 2025 model that I've had no issues with. If I could replace the control box on my 2024 with a 2025 version I would in a flash.

We love our Frame TVs. The mat screen is fantastic. The art looks awesome, and the TV is perfectly fine for our use. The fact that it mounts flush to the wall and is super thin is also great. The clip on bezels are just the icing on the cake. The family room one has fooled many people into thinking it's art.

If it's going to be your only tv, don't get it. If it's going to be an art piece and you won't have to rely on it to be your main tv…. Maybe. Honestly I hate ours with a passion.

I love art mode and the matte finish. I don't like the slow Samsung interface, the One Connect system which uses a cable that isn't in-wall rated (for a TV that is specifically designed for wall-mounting?), and the fact that I still can't get the motion smoothing settings the way I want.

It's a premium product because you're sacrificing a lot of normal media viewing quality to get art viewing quality. You can get a 2025 55" Hisense U7 for $50 less, and the picture quality for everything but art will run circles around it. If you're paying all that extra money for less performance and screen size, you should at least have a snappy OS to go with your good art.

I own a 2024 frame TV and a Hisense u8 series. If I were to redo my choice of a frame TV, I'd consider the canvas TV simply because the frame TV's UI is horrendous and I much prefer the Google TV UI that my Hisense has.

I have a 2025. It requires me to login every time it's powered on in order to use my own art in art mode. Wish I'd bought a 2024

I love The Frame TV hardware, but can't stand the software. Newer Frame TVs (2024 models onward) no longer return to Art Mode automatically when powered off via HDMI-CEC. It honestly feels like it should just be a setting in the Samsung OS.

Just an FYI since the Tizen 9 (version 2111) update installed on my 2024 frame based in Australia my Apple TV remote can now trigger art mode so hopefully this becomes a non issue for everyone once the update is rolled out globally.

It's crazy the lengths users have to go to fix something Samsung broke which was the main selling point of this product.

Love the matte screen and image quality. Viewing angles could be better though. I purchased mostly for displaying photography and the Samsung has a slight edge with colour accuracy over the canvas TV. Disappointingly, the software is terribly glitchy. I've only been using it for a week and have already had to do a hard reset. I'd expect this from a much cheaper product but it's really not good enough coming from Samsung.

Have you disabled Samsung TV Plus? That causes a lot of the lag on the TV controls - disabling it makes the TV usable.

I have 3 samsung TVs and a Sony all 3-8 years old. Both the 2024 and 2025 Frame TVs are by far slower than those, and for newer tech I just bought a TCL 98" two weeks ago, its light years faster. Never thought I'd say TCL was faster/better than Samsung.

FRAME OS sucks, AND you need to have very good luck to not get a faulty panel with really bad light bleeding and 'clouding'. I bought it from Amazon and Samsung took 1 month to actually tell me it was 'normal' and to lower the brightness and set contrast correctly. I was no longer able to return it directly to Amazon due to the late and horrible delay with Samsung support.

Love the look of mine for art, hate it as a TV. Lag is unbelievable, image quality is less than decent. Tons of backlight bleed and dim, looks milky. If it's for the aesthetic and not your primary TV, it's pretty good. If you're looking for best quality, probably shop around.

I bought a 75" Frame and unfortunately the WiFi adapter has broken on it and I've been mucked around by Samsung a lot trying to get it fixed. Apparently it's not an uncommon problem. I also agree with others that the backlight bleeding is pretty bad. And definitely don't go for the Music Frame option, it doesn't work well with the TV at all.
