Summary

The Samsung U7900F is a 2025 entry-level 4K Crystal UHD TV that has attracted near-universal criticism from the Reddit TV community. Available at retailers like Costco, Sam's Club, and Best Buy, it's being given away through promotions like Verizon's 5G home internet deal, which tells you a lot about where it sits in the market. The consensus is that it's a lateral move or outright downgrade compared to what the money can buy elsewhere — even in the sub-$700 range. Those who end up with it through promotions report glitchy picture behavior, Tizen OS frustrations, and no optical audio output despite older Samsung models having it. If basic TV functionality at a low price point is all you need and you're not paying full retail, it's passable — but paying market price for this over alternatives like TCL or Hisense is widely seen as a mistake.

Pros

  • Widely available at major retailers (Costco, Sam's Club, Best Buy) and often bundled with promotions like Verizon's 5G home internet plan, making it accessible at no upfront cost for some users
  • Samsung's Tizen smart TV OS offers solid ecosystem integration with Samsung phones and SmartThings devices, which is a genuine convenience for users already in the Samsung ecosystem
  • 4K UHD panel with Bluetooth 5.3 and eARC support, covering the basics for modern connectivity including soundbar setups via HDMI ARC
  • Brand recognition and wide retail availability means warranty support and returns are straightforward at major chains like Costco (5-year coverage available)

Cons

  • Edge-lit LED panel with no local dimming — at the 85" size reviewers believe it's still edge-lit, resulting in washed-out blacks and poor contrast compared to TCL or Hisense mini-LED sets at similar prices
  • Reddit's r/HTBuyingGuides and r/4kTV both have dedicated 'Why you shouldn't buy' posts for this exact model, with community moderators actively steering buyers away from it
  • Competing models like the TCL QM67K and TCL QM6K offer mini-LED panels with full-array local dimming, higher brightness, and better color — often at the same or lower price
  • Users report glitchy streaming behavior (jumpy picture with working audio), intermittent black screen issues during gaming, and Bluetooth audio stuttering — multiple units affected
  • No optical audio output, a step backward from Samsung's own earlier models, forcing users to use HDMI-to-optical adapters to connect legacy soundbars
  • Samsung's overall TV quality perception has declined significantly on Reddit — the U7900F is seen as emblematic of a brand coasting on name recognition rather than delivering value

Verizon Is Basically Giving These Away — That Should Tell You Something

The U7900F is being bundled as a free promotion with Verizon's 5G home internet. Owners who got it this way report glitchy behavior and are already questioning whether the free upgrade was worth it. When a TV is being given away to close internet deals, Reddit's verdict is: caveat emptor.

Samsung Brand Trust Is Doing Most of the Selling Here

Multiple users admit they chose the U7900F purely out of Samsung brand loyalty, only to discover competitors like TCL and Hisense are delivering meaningfully better panels for the same or less money. The r/4kTV community has a dedicated bot that automatically links the 'Why you shouldn't buy' guide every time this model is mentioned.

One User Did a Side-by-Side With a TCL and Wasn't Impressed Either Way

A buyer who returned their U7900F for a TCL model did a direct comparison and rated the Samsung a 7 and the TCL a 7.5 — barely different. For those coming from older budget sets, the upgrade might feel minimal regardless of which entry-level brand they pick.

As long as there is demand for them. People who care about PQ are relatively less. Most people just want something to display a picture. And all brands make trash TVs. No point singling out Samsung.

Its the same story with Sony and LG's less expensive LED models.

It's honestly shocking to me how far Samsung's lineup has fallen over the years. I remember when the KS8000 was one of the best TVs you could buy, and now the 8000 series is one of the worst values on the market. They still have high market share so people are clearly still buying them, and there's your answer. As long as people are still buying them, Samsung will keep making them.

Well they're the largest manufacturer of TV's at the moment by far and away. They're just good at marketing, especially to people in big box stores who don't have a clue and don't know what they're looking for besides wanting big, bright, colorful and cheap. When I worked for Best Buy my Samsung rep would shit on his TV's all the time lol. He had an LG OLED...

Most people buying TVs are coming from years ago when Samsung was the king. They don't know how bad the Enshitification of their products have gotten. They seem to be speed running their way to ruining the brand. I'll never buy anything Samsung makes again.

I bought a TU 8000 in 2021 and haven't had any issues with it so far. It was/is my first 4K tv though.

The Samsungs are a side grade from your current tv. The Q7 is what you should pick

Those are both bad TVs and you should just wait a couple of years until you feel you need it/have a use for it. The Samsung is easily the worst looking TV in any retail store, it's washed out, dim, and will likely die in under 4 years.

The average person has been fooled into thinking Samsung is basically like Sony. In Walmart, it's the one that looks the best because the rest are weird brands.

Between these two, the Vizio would be the better one since it's a Quantum Dot display with full array backlighting. The Samsung on the other hand just says LED, which honestly leads me to believe that even the 85" model is edge lit. Which you don't want.

Yeah that is what I have been hearing about Samsung TVs over the past 5+ years. That they have significantly dropped in quality compared to 2010s.

You can get an 85in TCL QM6K for like $1100. The QM6K is like the bare minimum for a decent TV experience these days.

Strange how their phones are really good, reliability-wise, but everything else seems to be far lower quality. I had a Samsung computer monitor and it only lasted 3 years. Turned out they used cheap capacitors.

not gonna lie, just bought an S90F, my first samsung TV OLED in a while, and I was absolutely SHOCKED by the low build quality. I cannot quite explain how much it did NOT feel like a high-end TV. Plus the fact that the panel itself is ever so slightly not perfectly flat.

I have been hearing how terrible the QC for Samsung TVs and monitors are for close to 10 years now. With alternatives like Hisense and TCL they must surely be running on fumes by now...

Everything is made cheaply these days. It's how they maintain profit margins.

Samsung has always relied on gimmicks to sell the TV. Other companies produce better products.

I bought a Samsung u7900fd the other day from Sam's Club. Since I've gotten it, every now and then, it will be glitchy. The audio will work fine but the picture is like jumpy. It will do this at the beginning of episodes, I back out and click back on it then it's fine. It only does it when I'm streaming.

I dont know if this will fix it for you, but I was having a similar issue whenever I tried to use my ps5. The fix was to turn off the game mode in the advanced settings. It defaults to auto and seems to have a bugged detection algorithm. I still have issues with the bluetooth stuttering. Im starting to think there's a reason they're giving these things away for free lol

TV is terrible. if u are on a super tight budget u can look at the Panasonic W95a or do it right, and spend the money on an LG OLED

Or even a S90D/C4 from last year. If you're avoiding OLEDs then consider Hisense U8N from last year

The QM67K is a much better TV than the U7900F. The QM67K has local dimming, so it displays much deeper blacks than the U7900F. Pretty much every aspect of the QM67K is better, so you're going to get a brighter TV, more vibrant colors, and better motion. Returning a TV can be a bit of a hassle, but I think it's totally worth it to get the QM67K over the U7900F. The QM67K is pretty much the best 55" TV you can get under $500 in Canada.

Tcl is a far better option. You will be amazed how good it is for the price. Entry level Samsung/lg/sony are not the best value for money.

I got the tcl tv as well and doing side by side comparison. If samsung is 7 then tcl is just 7.5. Not a huge difference.

Had Hisense for 4 years worked pretty well. But this year the TCL lineup is better than hisense. I just got a Qm6k It's pretty solid. Very happy with the purchase. Hisense lately is mostly focused on brightness numbers; tcl is working on better picture quality

Make sure it's up to date on software. If it is, I'd take it back. I have a 7200 — love the picture and audio but that Tizen OS is absolute junk. Such a horrible UI, idk what Samsung was thinking. I'm adding a Roku to mine, disabling WiFi to the tv and letting my Roku handle streaming duties.

I just bought a new Samsung 65" Class U7900 Series UHD 4K Smart Tizen TV. My old 55" Samsung that is perhaps 4 years old has the optical port. The new one doesn't. Go figure.

I also paid $100 and mine was delivered yesterday. I'm so scared to test it out. I really hope it isn't broken. Will Verizon replace it at no cost if it was delivered broken?
