Summary

The Sony A95L OLED is widely regarded by Reddit users as one of the finest televisions ever made, commanding near-universal praise for its QD-OLED panel, Sony's XR image processing, and exceptional color accuracy. Owners consistently describe it as a reference-level display that elevates all content types — from compressed streaming to 4K Blu-ray — and many say they still stop and appreciate the picture quality months or even years after purchase. The primary friction point is pricing: at retail the A95L has pushed above $4,000–$5,000, prompting ongoing debate about whether it's worth the premium over cheaper alternatives like the Bravia 8 or LG G4. The consensus is that buyers who catch it on sale — typically $3,000–$3,500 for the 77-inch — come away feeling they got exceptional value, while those paying full retail wrestle with justifying the cost. It's an ideal TV for movie enthusiasts, content purists, and anyone prioritizing color fidelity and deep blacks over raw brightness.

Pros

  • QD-OLED panel delivers industry-leading color accuracy and natural-looking images — users with professional monitor experience describe it as reference-level, and it consistently outperforms WOLED competitors in color volume and reds
  • Sony's XR processor produces outstanding upscaling, making 1080p and even 720p content look dramatically cleaner with minimal noise — particularly praised by sports viewers
  • Exceptional black levels and contrast in dark room environments, with perfect per-pixel dimming that eliminates the blooming seen on Mini LED sets
  • Runs the same firmware updates as current 2025 Sony models, keeping features current despite being a 2023 hardware release
  • Used and studio-trusted as a reference monitor — reportedly kept in production by Sony at the request of professional studios
  • Open-box deals at Best Buy frequently drop the 65-inch below $2,000 and the 77-inch to around $2,700–$3,500, making value compelling at those price points

Cons

  • Only two HDMI 2.1 ports on a flagship-priced TV is a significant limitation for multi-console gaming setups without an AVR
  • SDR and standard HDR brightness is lower than competing panels — the LG G4/G5 and newer 4th-gen QD-OLED sets post meaningfully higher peak nits, which matters in bright rooms
  • Aggressive Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL) kicks in during sustained bright scenes in HDR content, which frustrates some users expecting consistent peak output
  • Anti-glare coating is a semi-gloss compromise: better than a glossy panel but more visible in bright environments, and can be damaged by styrofoam or rough handling on open-box units
  • Google TV software criticized for being cumbersome compared to Apple TV or Roku alternatives — some users simply run an external streamer to sidestep it
  • No 83-inch size option — the largest panel Samsung Display produces in QD-OLED is 77 inches, leaving buyers wanting large-screen OLED to choose WOLED alternatives or size down

Does the A95L Actually Hold Up in a Bright Living Room?

Redditors are split: those with controllable lighting love it, while buyers in sun-drenched rooms find the Bravia 9 or LG G5 handle brightness more gracefully. The A95L's QD-OLED shines in dark or semi-controlled environments — in a sunlit room, its brightness ceiling becomes a real limitation.

Reddit Considers It the Best TV You Can Buy — If You Catch It on Sale

At full retail ($4,999–$5,000 for 77 inches) the community is skeptical. But when prices drop to $3,000–$3,500 during Super Bowl or holiday sales, consensus flips hard to 'buy immediately.' The A95L's value story is almost entirely about timing your purchase.

Open-Box Buyers Are the Secret Winners of the A95L Debate

Multiple users landed 65-inch units for under $1,900 and 77-inch units for $2,300–$2,700 as open-box purchases from Best Buy. The advice repeated across threads: check the service menu for display hours on ex-demo sets, and pair with a 5-year warranty to protect the investment.

No, it's not competitive…. It's exerting dominance over any other 77" OLED.

I work in film production, spend my days in front of 10k$ USD monitors and I don't know what more I could ever want from a tv. The A95L is simply stunning, reference level image.

'Brightness is not accuracy' — this times a million. I can't fathom how many times people are obsessed with brightness and nits.

Doubt the A95L is going to feel outdated 5 years from now. Top tier TV.

Cons for me would be: 1. Dolby Vision bugs. 2. Aggressive ABL in HDR content. 3. Below expected peak brightness in SDR content. 4. Shockingly only 2 HDMI 2.1 ports on a premium TV in 2023.

I went out and got the LG G3 but it wasn't any better than my A80J in terms of processing. So I went out and got the A95L, and I've been super happy with it. It's just an amazing set!

Note that 2025 models won't be released until like April next year and will be full priced when released. My advice would be to buy now but make sure you get the right size. You're likely to have more regret not going big enough vs incremental improvements with next year's models.

I think if Mini LED gets improved, that's the way to go if you like high brightness and deep contrast. I'm just a stickler for the qualities inherent to an OLED, so it would be hard to go back.

If you don't upgrade TVs often and keeping a TV for the long haul A95L is well worth it. Anything and everything you throw on this OLED is amazing. From compressed YouTube videos to live streaming apps for sports it cleans up the artifacts nicely with the upscaling. For viewing 4K content streaming or disc the colors just POP with the QD OLED panel but also providing that Sony natural look.

I just bought a 65" A95L in the Black Friday sales, but it's way overpriced. I also seriously considered the Bravia 8 but only in the larger 77". However, prices just didn't get low enough for me to bite, but I'm more than happy with the A95L. Simply put, it's brilliant!

For 5k, DEFINITELY NOT, however, it is definitely still recognized (rightfully so) among the best TVs available. The price is just unjustifiable without a sale in my opinion, considering the other newer TVs that are comparable or have it beat.

From RTINGS — the A95L is brighter in SDR, has better accuracy in SDR, and has less banding in color gradients than the Bravia 8 II. With most content, you won't notice a difference between them, so go with whatever model is more affordable.

I think it depends on your personal most frequent use case. I think Bravia 9 could be the better overall TV for families because of the higher overall brightness during daytime viewing. The A95L has ok brightness as well. Where it really shines in comparison to the Bravia 9 is in pitch black environment and gaming because of faster pixel response time.

It still smokes brand new WOLED so no. It still won 2024 tv shootouts, so no. The G5 is brighter. But the A95L and Bravia 8mk2 have better color.

At $5,000 no. I have both in the 77 inch variant. I got the A95L at the $3,500 mark. The A95L is a clear step above the Bravia 8. However, the Bravia 8 will satisfy you if you can moderately control the light in your room.

The only thing that I dislike is actually Google's software which I think makes it a little cumbersome. But it is an amazing TV.

If you primarily consume TV shows and movies more than gaming, Sony's are a no brainer.

A95L is still holding its price well. It's basically the same price as when I got it with a pre-order discount about a year ago. Compare that with the Bravia 8 and 9 which are getting 600 to 1k discounts even though they were just released in July.

It's the best TV I have ever purchased and I bought it as open box from Best Buy. But for $5,000 I'd say wait for a sale. It was $3,700 for 77" this past holiday season.

The A95L is awesome, but way over priced! I got an LG G4 on sale for $1500 LESS! That savings paid for my Q990D soundbar. The G4 is brighter, & the processing is now VERY close to the Sony. The Sony's QD panel will have better colours, esp reds tho!

In terms of pure picture quality the A95L is better but if you're trying to buy other things as well there's absolutely nothing wrong with going for the Bravia 8 to fit within budget.

It's a second generation QD-OLED panel, at this point I would wait for a 4th or 5th generation panel for this money.

A95L is ridiculous and I don't regret buying it at all even though it was steep. The sony easily has a leg up on the LG G4 even to the casual viewer.

They still make it for a reason, it's used as a reference monitor by many studios and they asked Sony to keep making them. The fact that consumers still buy them is just a bonus.

Might sound strange, but I went A95L largely due to the semi gloss panel… the Bravia 8 was super glossy and really distracted me while watching.

I just got mine yesterday! Only got to play with it for a couple hours, but it's easily the best TV I've had so far. I was second guessing myself going with it over the Bravia 8 II while it was still in transit, but now that I have it I have no regrets. Enjoy!
