Summary

The Sony BRAVIA 3 is an entry-level 4K LCD TV that divides Reddit into two camps: casual viewers who are genuinely happy with it, and enthusiasts who consider it overpriced for what you get. The consensus is that Sony's picture processing (X1 chip, Triluminos) punches above the hardware specs — especially for upscaling 1080p content — but the lack of local dimming, 60Hz panel, and no HDMI 2.1 make it hard to defend at full retail. Owners who picked it up on sale at Costco or during promotions are mostly satisfied, while those who paid full price tend to feel the sting of better-specced competitors at the same price. It's best suited for living rooms, bedrooms, and older family members upgrading from aging sets — not gamers or picture enthusiasts.

Pros

  • Sony's X1 processor delivers noticeably better upscaling and color accuracy than competitors at this price tier — users coming from decade-old Samsung and LG sets consistently report being impressed, particularly with 1080p content upscaling
  • Flicker-free DC dimming at all brightness levels makes it one of the few budget TVs that won't trigger PWM sensitivity, which is a niche but real advantage over TCL and Hisense options with FALD backlight strobing
  • Google TV interface is widely praised as clean, fast, and snappy compared to Roku-based or proprietary OS competitors — AirPlay support adds Apple ecosystem compatibility out of the box
  • IPS panel on the 43", 55", and 75" sizes provides wide viewing angles, making it well-suited for large rooms with off-axis seating versus VA-panel rivals with narrow sweet spots
  • Build quality and Sony reliability hold up: multiple long-term owners report 12–18+ months of zero issues, and the brand's 3-year warranty offers more peace of mind than budget Chinese brands
  • Costco pricing (seen as low as $375–$399 for 65" and 75" during markdowns) dramatically improves the value proposition — at those prices the criticism largely evaporates

Cons

  • No local dimming means blacks appear as dark grey in dark scenes — this is the most consistent complaint across all threads and directly limits HDR performance; competing 55" sets like the TCL QM7 and Hisense U7N offer FALD at a lower or equal price
  • 60Hz native panel across all sizes disqualifies it for any serious gaming use — no VRR, no HDMI 2.1, no 120Hz; the Bravia 3 II (successor) fixes all of this with 4x HDMI 2.1 and native 120Hz
  • Built-in audio quality is widely criticized as thin and bass-deficient — nearly every owner ends up pairing it with a soundbar, and features like Voice Zoom are locked to Bravia 5 and above
  • At full retail ($600 for 55", $749 for 65"), the value argument collapses — the TCL QM7 and Hisense U7N offer QLED VA panels with full-array local dimming for less money
  • Some units across sizes show corner uniformity issues and IPS glow — at least one owner reported visible darker corners, and VA panel sizes (50", 65", 85") show a hazy, washed-out look in store conditions
  • 2GB RAM and 32-bit internals are showing age — one owner noted sluggishness after software updates, and storage limitations are a recurring concern for a smart TV platform expected to last years

Who Actually Loves the Bravia 3? Casual Viewers, Not Enthusiasts

Owners who use it for streaming, news, and casual movie watching consistently report satisfaction — sometimes even after coming from OLED. But AV-focused users and gamers uniformly recommend spending more or going to a different brand entirely. The TV is decent when you don't know what you're missing.

The Costco Loophole That Makes the Bravia 3 Worth It

At $600 MSRP, Reddit almost universally calls it a bad deal. But Costco markdowns have pushed 65" and 75" units down to $375–$499, and at those prices the criticism largely disappears. Buying at full retail is where the regret starts.

The Bravia 3 II Makes the Original Almost Impossible to Recommend

Sony just unveiled the Bravia 3 II with 4x HDMI 2.1 ports, native 120Hz, and XR processor inclusion — everything the original was criticized for lacking. Early buyers of the original are already feeling the sting, and the upgrade path is now obvious for anyone who hasn't yet purchased.

Bravia 5 II might be a good value pick if it gets similar upgrades to the 3 II.

Honestly Sony doesn't make any non-OLED models under 55" that are worth it. You're better off with another brand if you can't step up to a 55" model like the X90L or BRAVIA 5.

The bravia 3 @ 50 inches in 599.00 at Best buy. I know that there are negative reviews out there but for your needs and budget it should be fine. Don't be influenced negatively. It's Sony therefore great color processing and upscaling, reliable and consistent.

In that price range that's a great deal. Sony's picture quality and reliability are leagues above TCL. Refresh rate doesn't matter unless they're going to use a powerful gaming console. No regular content (cable, streaming, DVD) is ever above 60Hz.

I have a Bravia 7 and Bravia 3. I am very happy with both. I got a 75 Bravia 3 at Costco for 399. People will crap on the B3 because it doesn't have local dimming but, as someone with PWM sensitivity, it's very easy on the eyes and the blacks aren't nearly as bad as everyone says.

Sony TVs have a great UI, even on the lower end models. No weird clunky OS. Triliminos Pro is basically Sony's implementation of QLED. Also, QLED is mostly just a marketing term; it's still primarily LCD technology and the LED only refers to the backlight unlike OLED.

It's a great TV for daily viewing, I have the 50" and it's not bad. I'd honestly give it about an 8 out of 10, because it's not the best for gaming and the blacks are more like dark greys IMHO. The colors are fantastically accurate though, and overall brightness is pretty awesome too. Would I buy it again? Probably.

I have the 55" for a couple months now and I think it's great for the price point. I've had zero issues with mine. Some people are comparing a Bravia 3 to a Bravia 7 and that's not fair in terms of price. If you compare a Bravia 3 to an equal costing competitor, I take the Bravia hands down.

It's better than some Samsung and LG crap like Nano cell and crystal HD.

It's a great TV, for what you are doing with it enjoy it. You will only tell a difference if a higher model is sitting side by side. Love it, it's a Sony!

Coming from someone who just got bravia 3 last month, I don't recommend it. You don't get to have sound modes so you're stuck to default tuning, their Voice Zoom feature is only available from bravia 5 and up.

We just got it, and I prefer it to my former Sony tv from 2015. I know it's not a super tv, but it's not that expensive, the sound is a lot better than on my former tv and the upscaling is very good. I had the limitation of having space for ~50" at most, and this tv suited my needs. I wasn't willing to pay 50% more for a better tv from Sony with the same size.

I have the 43" in our bedroom and I'm really happy with it. I think the lack of local dimming is actually an advantage - no glowing cloud around the subtitles and credits, for example.

There are better TVs at that price with gaming features like HDMI 2.1, VRR, 120hz refresh rate.

Would love to see their entire lineup move to mini LED. There is certainly a market for thinner edge lit screens but I think Sony charges far too much money to offer edge lit options.

I originally bought a Sony Oled A90k 48" and returned it cause I thought it didn't look good. The blacks make everything look darker and it didn't seem bright enough even with brightness at max. I ended up getting a Bravia 3, and honestly it looks better. Yes the blacks are grey, but honestly I prefer the lighter look. PS5/Nintendo Switch hooked up looks great. Anime looks amazing.

It's a solid entry level TV with Sony build quality and support. However, it's a base model TV with no local dimming and it's a 60Hz panel - blacks are not super deep and it's not super bright, but for average viewing it's a solid TV. If black levels, brightness, gaming, and higher performance viewing are a concern, spend the extra for a X90L or higher.

Using 55" one since last 2 months, great picture quality and no issues encountered. Can't comment about audio quality since we use a soundbar.

Bravia 3 is a terrible TV and it's worth spending a couple hundred more for a better quality tv. I'd recommend a TCL QM7 or Hisense U8 if you're looking near the same price point. The Sony X90L is a night and day difference compared to the Bravia 3 and well worth the extra money.

It's not bad for an entry level model. I feel the X90L is still better value. We got the 65" Bravia 3 for our folks and it's perfectly acceptable in my books. You can easily still buy far worse from other brands.

It's a trash tv cashing in on the Sony brand. At that price point you'd do much better with a Hisense or similar. Sony only really starts to shine in mid to high end. I honestly don't know why they bother selling these budget sets as all it does is damage their brand.

I was impressed for what it is. Not the price, but it's okay in its class. I find that it has better clarity and off angle viewing. Just watch it and see what you want to change.

As someone with a very small desk, the 43 inch version would be a suitable primary screen and computer monitor. Also, given that it is now 120 hz compared to the Bravia 3 Mark 1 which is only 60hz, this is a great deal for me, especially for FPS games.

This could be huge for us who can't tolerate flicker. OLED has flicker, Mini-led and FALD have flicker. Finally a basic TV with 120Hz. The IPS models look pretty as long as you have some ambient light going on.

I have the BRAVIA 3 hooked up to my PlayStation 5 - yeah, no 120Hz or VRR support unlike the 5 and up or rivals, only a 60Hz TV with ALL-M game mode - but I still enjoy gaming on mine.

We just got this tv and the sound is deplorable! We've always had Sony tvs as they are great quality. The sound on this model is sooo tinnie. It's terrible. Now we need to buy a sound bar.

I purchased a Bravia 3 a few days ago and I actually prefer it to my previous TV that was an LG C2. Maybe I'm insane. 1080p stuff always looked like garbage on that C2 and most of what I watch is 1080p. Sony's upscaling is really good.

If you really want a 2024 Sony TV and it's the only one in your budget, it's not a terrible option. Undoubtedly better than the competition due to Sony picture processing. But you'll definitely get more for your money looking elsewhere. For $500 you can get either the 55" Hisense U7N or the 55" TCL QM7. Both are QLED VA panels with FALD. The B3 is a regular LED IPS panel with no local dimming.

Sony's picture processing and color matching are the strong USP for considering an entry level Bravia 3. I have a 75" Bravia 3 and the SDR content in professional picture mode is accurate. Leaving the Reality Creation at Auto by far produces much more detail in dark scenes.

People sleep on the fact that this tv is flicker free. It might be appreciated by your parents. Just an easy tv to watch.

For the people that are planning on buying this TV, the top and bottom corners are darker than the rest of the screen. If that bothers you, 100% avoid it. I just don't believe that kind of issue should happen on a SONY TV.

I bought the same TV to replace a 15 year old lcd. The picture on the Sony looks better than the old one. It is however thicker than the TV it replaced - probably twice as thick. If you're going to mount it, keep that in mind. I've been happy with it so far.

I just bought a Bravia 3 65" Google TV and had wifi connection dropouts after 3 days of use. TV guide on TV has different time zone than system time and not able to change it. Also having connection issues with compatible Sony soundbar and the wireless sub. Not happy. Have already submitted fault report to Sony.

I've just bought a Bravia 3 and I'm really not happy with it. Picture quality is very poor compared to other 4k TVs. Contrast was awful straight out the box, but it's better now I've adjusted the black levels. It also keeps dropping the WiFi signal, when my phone and laptop are fine. Absolutely the worst TV I've owned.

Pick up the bravia without a heartbeat. It did not slow down. It was going strong until this morning when my little one threw a hot wheels metal car on the screen. It is gone, literally today. TCL is no match for this tv.

Sound was horrible, voices were occluded by other sounds and Voice Zoom feature is only available in BRAVIA 5 or better. Switched to DTS Virtual X for a slightly better voice separation. Can't even believe this TV doesn't have sound modes to play with.

This is a trash tv. You want miniLED, FALD, local dimming and VA panel. Bravia 3 has a bad IPS panel with contrast 1000:1 and subpar brightness. Buy an acceptable TV for your budget like TCL c6k or better c7k.
