Summary

The Sony BRAVIA 5 is a Mini-LED Google TV that generates genuinely split opinions on Reddit — not because it's bad, but because it launched in the shadow of the X90L, a TV many consider better at a lower price. Owners who evaluate it on its own terms tend to be satisfied, praising Sony's XR processor, motion handling, and overall build quality. The main real-world complaints center on HDR brightness in brightly lit rooms and the VA panel's limited viewing angles. It's a TV for people who want Sony's processing and ecosystem without paying for the Bravia 7 or 9.

Pros

  • Sony's XR processor delivers noticeably better motion handling than competing Mini-LED TVs like the TCL QM7K — multiple switchers report the TCL's motion blur being a dealbreaker, while the Bravia 5 handles sports and action without ghosting or judder
  • Mini-LED backlight with local dimming provides solid contrast in dark rooms, with the 98" variant specifically praised as having inky blacks and no visible blooming in real-world use
  • VRR works reliably for PS5 gaming according to owners, with no frame pacing issues reported in practice despite Rtings flagging concerns
  • XR processor upscaling handles standard definition and lower-quality streaming content well — multiple users were surprised how good regular cable and low-quality streams looked
  • Available in 98" where options are very limited, and the 98" version is reportedly brighter and better-equipped than smaller sizes, making it competitive against the 98" X90L it replaced
  • Google TV integration is considered clean compared to Samsung's OS, and 'Simple Mode' lets users bypass ads entirely and run Apple TV or similar streamers without friction

Cons

  • HDR peak brightness is insufficient for bright living rooms — this is the most repeated real-world complaint and aligns with Rtings' findings; the Bravia 7 is noticeably brighter and widely recommended as the upgrade for anyone who watches in daylight
  • Value proposition is weak at full retail: the X90L was generally considered a better TV and sold for less before being discontinued, making the Bravia 5 feel like a lateral or downward move for the same money
  • VA panel means limited viewing angles — a significant issue for households with wide seating arrangements or off-axis viewers, where competing IPS or QD-OLED panels hold a clear advantage
  • Out-of-box HDR color accuracy is poor according to both Rtings and users who compared against calibrated settings — requires manual tuning to get the most out of it; Professional mode with local dimming set to High is the baseline starting point
  • Motionflow (frame interpolation) needs to be enabled at low settings for acceptable motion on large sizes — with it fully off, several 85"+ owners report motion as noticeably bad
  • Priced above the Bravia 7 in some European markets like Switzerland, making it an even harder sell in regions where Sony's EU pricing is already considered unreasonable

Rtings Said It Was Bad. Owners Disagree.

The Bravia 5 has a credibility gap: Rtings' review scared off a lot of buyers, but owners consistently report the real-world picture is better than the review suggests — especially for upscaling, motion, and dark room performance. Multiple users said they almost didn't buy it because of the review and are now glad they ignored it.

The X90L's Shadow Is the Real Problem

The Bravia 5 isn't a bad TV — it's a TV that arrived after a better one. The X90L was widely regarded as a mid-range sweet spot, and the Bravia 5 launched at similar or higher prices with a dimmer panel. That comparison follows it into every buying discussion and makes the value case genuinely difficult to defend at full price.

The 98" Version Is a Different Conversation

Most of the criticism targets smaller sizes. The 98" Bravia 5 has more dimming zones, higher peak brightness, and owners of that specific size are significantly more positive — some saying it outperforms the 98" X90L. If you're shopping at that size, the consensus is much warmer than the overall Bravia 5 reputation suggests.

Yeah, QM7K pretty much owns the mid-range this year.

Picked this up last week. Fantastic tv for the price. Mini LED is awesome for brightly lit rooms and the colors pop well. Been working great for VRR too when gaming on my PS5

Rtings number scores are mostly irrelevant the meat is in reading the actual words of the review

Processing means fuck all if it doesn't get bright enough in HDR to make an impact. That's unacceptable.

Stop reading nonsense on the internet, and go and watch some nice content on your nice TV.

It could be that ppl are actually biased towards rtings reviews as it got a less score. I tested it in the showroom myself and its very good. Bravia 7 is a little bit brighter and has more dimming zones, that's it. Yes, Bravia 7 and 9 are better but Bravia 5 is value for money.

It's not horrible but it's a big downgrade from the X90L which is a deception. It's a bit too dim to enjoy HDR properly too

If you get the Bravia 5 in home you will see that rtings made the tv look way worse that it actually is it's a great tv!!

The biggest complaint about Bravia 5 is the dimness of the screen. There are several presets to choose from for brightness or a manual brightness setting. Simply adjust the manual setting until bright enough for your liking. It's a great tv, you just need to be familiar with adjusting the settings.

55inch Bravia 5 is great unless you watch movies in a super bright room.

I bought a 75" Bravia 5 paired with HTA3000 sound bar from Best Buy last week. After arriving at Best Buy, Sony rep greeted us. Prices were 5:$1500, 7:$1900 and 9:$2800. I went with the 5 for the value.

I think they should have just not released the Bravia 5 and kept the x90 in production. The 3 is fine at lower mid. Only thing I can think of is eventually they plan to aggressively cut the Bravia 3 down to better compete on price and needed something to be at the current Bravia 3 price

I've probably set up 70 ish sony TVs so I feel relatively qualified: My first move is almost always go into professional picture mode, and on a mini led like the 5, max brightness, then if you're in HDR, detail preferred over brightness, and the mini led backlight set to the high setting to really get the peaks up there.

I'm old enough to remember when Sony offered mediocre TV's and relied on their name to sell them. Looks like this Sony is coming back.

The whole cool thing is that the Bravia 5 is actually on step before the Sony rgb mini-LEDs, it uses a red and green backlight instead of a traditional backlight. So it gets crazy colours, and keeps energy usage low. So u made a very good purchase enjoy it :)

I just got a Bravia 5 98", I've had it for a week, no regrets. I was concerned about upscaling of standard definition but it looks great.

I can tell you I am very happy with mine. Was gonna go TCL cause of the brightness hype and value but I'm very sensitive to motion. The Sony does motion very well. It's plenty bright in a living room with open windows and it all just works. Blacks are inky and i don't see any blooming. Panel uniformity is amazing as I don't see any dirty screen effect or vertical banding at all.

Don't worry what other people say, you honestly probably wouldn't notice the difference between the TV's anyway. Sony is debatably the best TV brand on the market. It's like buying a Mercedes and saying, I got the second trim level from top of the line, did I screw up?

Sony completely dropped the ball on what could have been awesome had they simply offered the Bravia 9 in 98". Instead they come out with this steaming pile of shit that they never should've came out with. The new TCL 98" TVs made Sony their bitch.

B5 is the most bang for the buck and having the XR processor makes all the difference especially in streaming according to all the reviews. I have the XR processor in my J series and im still surprised how well it looks and sounds compared to newer TVs from other brands today.

Once you've owned a Sony you'll never be able to go back to a lesser TV, especially with motion. The B5 will be a good step up or if you're ok going smaller the B9 is as good as it gets

I used to take rtings as law until I went to look at the Bravia 5 in the store. I also compared it to the 7 and it was not worth the price difference that I could justify. I actually fretted over if I made the right call for days before it was delivered bc of rtings. I have a x90L in the bedroom and it's great. Everyone said the 5 was a huge downgrade and the brightness would just be awful. I have the Bravia 5 75 in my living room now. In HDR the TV is not bright enough for a bright room.

I was incredibly torn with the 98" B5 and 85" B9. We looked at the display a couple times and realized the viewing angles on the B5 weren't great. We have a large sectional and my wife watches from an angle usually.

I was between the 5 & 7 also. Cost-wise, I went with the 5 since I was looking at the 85" size. The 7 was a few hundred more. I've been happy with the choice so far, had it about a month, but got the extended warranty just to be safe.

Part of the issue with the Bravia 5 is that the X90L was available the year before which is generally a better TV at a lower price. The B5 in a vacuum is fine

The tcl is trash man. I really don't understand the rave reviews. It's borderline unwatchable for me. The Dolby vision was horrible compared to even my old 900h. Dark scenes are crushed and whites are blinding. It literally did nothing good except for being big, and watching YouTube hdr demo videos

I skipped on 98" Bravia 5 because of that review and now regret it. Turns out 98" version is brighter and better than the X90L, and even was cheaper during the sale.

It's not terrible, but at that level of TV, you can find basically the same thing for much cheaper.

My 48" Sony failed after 4 years and Sony replaced it under warranty with a 55" Bravia 5. It's brilliant

I recently bought a 98" sony bravia 5 and a 65" tcl qm7k. The tcl for another room. if you watch sports or a lot of action movies, you NEED to go with the sony. The TCL came in first and the motion issues were immediately apparent.

Bought a 75" TCL QM7K and the processing is awful. Upscaling is very bad, and the motion handling is horrendous to an extent that I actually get angry while watching anything on it. TCL processing is unfortunately trash. That being said, the 98" Bravia 5 is what I'm looking at switching to.

I've had a 55" BRAVIA 5 for a month and a half now, and I've been really satisfied with it. Solid upgrade from the Samsung DU7200B I had. Better picture quality, and it even seems to give my HT-A5000 more to work with.

Bravia 5 is a great mid-range TV. The mini LED produces a brighter more vivid picture than the full array LED on the x90 CL so it is an upgrade. Plus 85in TVs are in a bit of a bad spot right now for availability, so I think you picked one of the better ones on the market for the price

The 7 is substantially better than the 5. The 5 is still a good TV but the image quality is noticeably better on the 7. I think Sonys have had very good quality control and reliability relative to other TV brands.

Just bought the 5 because I needed a 98" with sports being a major part of the usage. Mounted today. Seems solid for the price but getting it calibrated professionally soon.

What is that site for anyway really. All it does is show a bunch of stats for nerds and a bunch of videos and screenshots of a hallway HDR where the difference is negligible when comparing tvs. Nothing on there translates to any real world things I will do once it's setup at home. They said Bravia 3 sucks. They said LG uk6470plc sucks. Neither did for me.
