Summary

The Sony Bravia 8 OLED has earned a strong reputation among Reddit users as one of the best mid-range OLED TVs available, praised especially for movie watching in dark or controlled-light rooms. Owners consistently highlight the XR processor's superior motion handling, natural color reproduction, and built-in Acoustic Surface Audio as standout differentiators from competitors. The main friction points are a known near-black gradient/banding issue (linked to the missing 'Smooth Gradation' setting that other Sony models include) and brightness that trails the LG C5 in spec sheets — though many real-world owners find the brightness concern overblown. It competes directly with the LG C4/C5 at a higher price, with Sony fans arguing the processing and OS quality justify the premium. The Mark II variant (Bravia 8 II) addresses several criticisms by switching to a 4th-gen QD-OLED panel with notably improved brightness.

Pros

  • XR cognitive processor delivers industry-leading upscaling and motion clarity — owners consistently say 720p/1080p sports and older content looks significantly better than on LG or Samsung at the same price tier
  • Acoustic Surface Audio uses the screen itself as a speaker, delivering surprisingly immersive sound that owners say eliminates the need for a soundbar in casual use
  • Google TV is praised as the smoothest and most responsive smart TV OS in the segment — notably less bloated than LG's WebOS and more reliable than Tizen
  • Sony Pictures Core subscription (2 years free) and native 80 Gbps Netflix streaming add real value over LG equivalents
  • OLED infinite contrast and inky blacks make dark-room movie watching genuinely stunning — multiple owners describe it as a revelatory upgrade from LCDs and older OLEDs alike
  • Burn-in concerns are minimal for mixed-use viewing — owners report thousands of hours including gaming with no noticeable retention

Cons

  • Missing 'Smooth Gradation' setting (present on virtually all other Sony Bravia models) causes visible banding and posterization on dark gradient scenes — particularly noticeable on streaming content and older SDR material; Sony confirmed the omission but declined to fix it
  • Only two HDMI 2.1 ports vs four on LG and Samsung equivalents — a real frustration for users running both a gaming console and a PC simultaneously
  • LG C5 offers measurably higher peak brightness for a lower price (~$500 less at 77"), making it the stronger value for bright-room or daytime viewing
  • Wide-legged stand requires a TV unit as wide as the full panel — multiple users say this alone nearly killed their purchase decision
  • The base Bravia 8 uses the same WOLED panel as the 2024 C4 (not the newer 2025 C5 panel), meaning the Mark II is the model to buy if paying full price in 2025
  • Remote lacks backlighting and uses small buttons — a persistent minor complaint across nearly all threads

The Banding Problem Sony Won't Fix

The Bravia 8's dark scene gradient banding isn't a defect — it's a deliberate omission. Sony removed the 'Smooth Gradation' setting that every other Bravia includes, and when users contacted support, the response was essentially: too bad. Workarounds exist (noise reduction + Reality Creation adjustments), but none fully solve it.

Reviewers Said 'Too Dim.' Owners Said 'Turn Off Eco Mode.'

RTings and Quantum TV's low brightness scores caused widespread buyer hesitation, but real owners overwhelmingly report that with eco mode off and peak luminance set to High, the Bravia 8 is plenty bright for most rooms — some even complain it's too bright. The spec-sheet gap versus LG matters most in very bright, sunlit rooms.

Best TV for PS5 Pro Owners Who Also Watch Films

The combination of XR processing, Acoustic Surface Audio as a center channel, and OLED contrast makes the Bravia 8 a uniquely compelling pick for users who split time between 4K disc movies and console gaming. Multiple PS5 Pro owners describe it as an '11/11 experience' — a use case where LG's brightness advantage matters less than Sony's processing and audio integration.

In my years of living and looking at TVs. Sony TVs have historically always been the best color reproduction and clarity combined. Sony TVs always have been the nicest for me.

All OLEDs will burn in eventually. It's just your usage that dictates how soon you'll get a noticeable burn in image. If you're using the OLED to watch TV shows and movies, you won't see burn in for a long time because your TV will be degrading more uniformly with varied content.

I just got the 8 II yesterday and it's the best TV I've ever seen. Absolutely perfect for 4K blu rays and gaming on my PS5 Pro.

I almost didn't buy this because of the so-called brightness issue. After buying it my wife and kids have at times complained that it's too bright.

I have the 8ii next to a G5 and an S95F, Sony looks the nicest, followed by the LG then Samsung. I'm sorry Samsung but your image processing is not up to it anymore.

It may be the best TV but Sony decided to fit the worst stand. Why do manufacturers think that we all use 1.5m wide TV stands? The feet are on the outer edges of the TV so you have to have a TV unit as wide as the TV.

Caleb is really the only TV reviewer I pay attention to, because I like how much time he spends talking about 'real world' use. After all the knocks on that model, which he addressed thoroughly in his review, I still went with it because at the end of his review he basically asked, would I spend $200 more for the other TV? And his answer was no.

C5. Its slightly better than sony 8 in most ways and cheaper. LG has great processing and great out-of-the-box accuracy for movies so you're not really sacrificing either by not going with sony. At the mid level OLED I'd say its either C5 or S90F.

From reviews I've seen, The C5 for brightness in HDR. The Sony for processing and clarity.

It will be a big upgrade over the Samsung. The Samsung will look very dull next to the B8. When I set up the TV it did some room sound calibration and it sounded really good for TV speakers.

I love my Bravia 8 M2 coming from an LG C7 in a brightish room but I am rarely home during the day. What I have watched and played game wise is spectacular and I had no idea what I was missing color and HDR wise.

Bravia 8 owner. I've had similar issues with dark gradients pixelating, but I've only had this on non-modern content - i.e. movies from the 80s/90s. Modern Netflix content played with the Netflix alignment settings have looked fine.

Sadly, the XR80 is a bit dumbed down compared to other Sony OLEDs. For calibration purposes, Sony reduced the grayscale adjustments from 20 points to 10 points and removed the CMS altogether.

Sony!! I've never seen an OLED show off such natural and life like colors and images like the Bravia 8. Some videos look like I can jump into the scene and be there. The C5 is a great all arounder and value but that 3D pop is a little lacking.

Nice! I got the 55 inch about 2-3 weeks ago and love it. It's brighter than I expected. Dolby Vision image looks great. It's a fantastic TV for both movies and gaming.

I own a Bravia 8 mk2 — it's an amazing TV. I used to own an A95L and I can say from my personal experience that the Bravia 8 mk2 is better and brighter than the A95L. Gen 4 panel vs gen 2 panel means more efficient screen, 25% brighter, better shadow detail, improved screen coating, and a better UI that is noticeably less laggy.

B8 owner. That's 'normal' for this tv. Drove me nuts but I just ignore it now. It's there even with 4K Blu-rays although to a lesser extent.

I tweaked the B8 setting day 1, Netflix mode and prime mode I'm not a fan of. I just run a tweaked standard mode. The dark scenes look amazing on stranger things and I don't have the Netflix 4k plan. Netflix HD upscaled to 4K on a good Sony TV looks really solid for me.

I had the same issue as OP maybe even worse and using the Rtings guide made dark scenes watchable again.

I bought a Bravia 8 on black Friday and love it! Great picture, plenty bright, the OS feels snappy and smooth. Zero issues with it so far but I did get the extended warranty on it for piece of mind.

Amazing! My old TV was a Sony x950G and it really bright during HDR scenes. I was worried about an OLED TV not getting as bright but after watching a few movies my worries were put to rest. But I do watch movies and play games in a complete dark room.

I've got the Bravia 8. Macroblocking and posterisation can happen on WOLEDs, but should not be this bad. Maybe it's an issue with your TV or your settings. I've experienced it a few times when streaming low bitrate movies, but still not experienced this when watching 4k blurays. The picture always looks excellent.

I got the same tv. Outside of this dark scene SDR gradient issue, I find it to be a stellar tv, and absolutely gorgeous/perfect at everything else. Just pisses me off they always have to do one thing to spoil a perfect TV.

Bought the C5 and returned it. I now own the Bravia 8. Sony picture quality and color saturation is miles ahead of LG.

I'm a Sony fanboy, always have been. I love my Bravia 8. Sony uses Google TV, which is the smoothest in my opinion. WebOS has a ton of bloat and so many people use Apple TV with it. Tizen just isn't great.

Can't say enough wonderful things about Sony Bravia 8. We got the 77" and the picture and sound are absolutely amazing. Finally no sound bar needed!

My 65" model arrived yesterday and I love it. It stands out in comparison to my older LG OLED B7 and Sony A8H. The colours are vibrant, black levels deep and the TV is plenty bright even with blinds open in my den. It connected smoothly via E-arc to my Onkyo NR7100 and even the built-in speakers sound good if my AVR is off.

I agree. I bought it and it's amazing. I've compared it with the z95b, which I thought I'd like better since it gets brighter, but the Bravia looks better.

I got the 65XR80M2 and honestly it's too bright at times in the living space with sunlight coming in. The colour pop and the inbuilt sound is awesome! I thought I could get QD OLED for cheaper with Samsung but I did not want a matte screen. This one just blows me away.

I have been dealing with this for a year now. Mine is in HDR the blacks glow silver, gives everyone silver beards. Today I've just tested all my movies again (4k blu rays) and put the gamma to min. In both dolby vision and professional mode depending on content, and my problem seems to be fixed finally.

I also had a80j and got bravia 8 but could not stand lack of smooth gradation feature it was very apparent comparing them side by side. Sony definitely 'dumbed' it down. So I returned it.

I've had a bravia 8 65 inch for about a year with no complaints. Mostly watch broadcast TV sports, stream and local 4k and PC gaming all are fantastic. I literally picked up a 77 inch version of it today open box at a great price and didn't think twice about it.

I bought mine about a year ago, I love it. I've seen a few elitists criticize the brightness, but I feel like anything brighter than this TV would probably melt my eyes so I'm more than happy with it. I was blown away coming from another bravia that wasn't even that old and already pretty high end, so you're in for a huge treat.

Bought it a month ago. Love it. The picture quality is fantastic but what's most impressive is the processing. It hones in automatically and improves the image to perfection. It's plenty bright but it has an extremely reflective screen. You have to be proactive.

I've got a Bravia 8 that I got earlier in the year. I've got just over 1k hours total on it now. About 700ish of those hours has been video games with HUD displays. I watch sports in Vivid mode too. Zero burn in so far.

Something about the motion and flow on the Sony, how it looked more fluid and the colors looked richer and deeper. So I ended up taking one home. I was expecting it would be too dim based on reviews, but that is not the case at all.

So I've had my Bravia 8 for 3 weeks or so, and I love it but I have been noticing when watching that during panning scenes where there is a solid color there appears to be vertical panels or bars that show up that look like a shadow or like the lighting is different.

Just bought a 65inch Bravia 8... had it for three weeks.. I'm absolutely in love with mine, it has plenty of pop and contrast but it also looks very realistic, particularly with skin tones. It has a dynamic picture with deep colours without that overcooked vivid look.

Did the same, bought all three, kept the Bravia. LG was close; bright and beautiful. Samsung motion is questionable for streaming — artifacts all over the place. I don't understand why this isn't mentioned in any reviews.

Sony really needs to step up the gaming specs for its TVs. 4k/120 and lack of HDMI 2.1 ports got old long ago. I have one gaming console but I also have a PC. Having to disconnect the HDMI from PS5 to put it in PC and then back again is such a minor annoyance but over years it really adds up, especially because LG/Samsung have been providing adequate number of ports for several years now.

Was in store yesterday and compared 8 to 8 mkii. The 65 inch 8 is 700 Euros less than the 55 inch mkii. If that's the case go for the 8. There was literally 0 difference between the 2 except for brightness and more stable angle views.

Couldn't agree more! I've had this for a year now almost - it's stunning if your room isn't too bright.
