Summary

The Sony BRAVIA 9 is Sony's flagship mini-LED TV and Reddit's consensus pick for the best non-OLED display money can buy. Owners across multiple subreddits consistently describe it as a jaw-dropping upgrade from both budget LED sets and even premium OLEDs, with the panel's extreme brightness and near-OLED black levels being the most praised qualities. It's best suited for mixed-use environments — bright living rooms, casual gaming, sports, and streaming — where its anti-glare coating and light-cannon brightness outclass OLED competition. Pricing volatility is a common frustration, with the 85" swinging between $3K and $4K depending on sales cycles, and most users recommend waiting for Super Bowl or Black Friday windows to buy.

Pros

  • Extreme peak brightness reaching close to 3000 nits, making it one of the brightest consumer TVs available — owners frequently joke about needing sunglasses in a dark room
  • Sony's XR image processor delivers the best motion handling in the mini-LED category, especially praised for sports and 24fps film content where judder is less pronounced than on OLEDs
  • Anti-glare coating is a major differentiator over the Bravia 7 — owners in sunlit rooms with windows report virtually no distracting reflections even in full daylight
  • Black levels described by multiple OLED owners as 'almost indistinguishable' from OLED in normal viewing conditions, with blooming largely a non-issue at medium local dimming settings
  • Gaming performance on PS5 is solid at 120hz with ~9ms input lag and full VRR/ALLM support — widely recommended for single-player and co-op console gaming
  • No burn-in risk, making it the preferred alternative for heavy gamers who display static HUDs for hours — a concrete advantage over A95L and other OLEDs at similar price points

Cons

  • Pricing is unstable and can jump $1000 overnight — the 85" has ranged from $2900 to $4000 depending on retailer and sales cycle, making timing the purchase critical
  • Judder on 24fps cinematic content is still present and not fully eliminated without enabling motion interpolation, which introduces soap opera effect — users switching from OLED for this reason may be disappointed
  • A reported coil whine from the PSU during Dolby Vision content is a known hardware issue on some units, audible in quiet scenes even after Sony replaced the PSU for one affected owner
  • eARC audio dropout bugs are documented on AVSForums, requiring workarounds like optical audio output or daily power cycling — a frustrating issue for home theater setups
  • The Bravia 7 offers near-identical picture quality at $900 less according to several side-by-side comparisons at Best Buy, making the B9's value proposition questionable unless glare handling is a priority
  • XWide anti-glare coating can produce faint rainbow streaks on dark scenes when light hits the screen at certain angles — a niche but confirmed visual artifact

The Coil Whine Problem Nobody Talks About

A subset of Bravia 9 owners report an audible high-pitched noise from the power supply during bright Dolby Vision content. Sony replaced the PSU for at least one affected user with zero improvement, suggesting it may be a design-level issue rather than a defective unit.

Is the Bravia 9 Worth $900 More Than the Bravia 7?

Reddit is split. Multiple users who did side-by-side comparisons at Best Buy couldn't tell the two apart. The consensus: the price premium is only justified if you have glare problems — the B9's anti-reflective coating is a genuine upgrade, while picture quality differences are subtle at best.

OLED Refugees Are Staying Put

Several users who switched from LG C3, A90J, and other premium OLEDs to the Bravia 9 say they don't miss their old panels. Burn-in anxiety, washed-out highlights, and lower brightness made the switch easy — and most say they wouldn't go back.

Have the 85" B9, it's a beast. Not interested in OLED at all tbh.

Anti Glare, closer to OLED like backlighting system, so yes depending on circumstances — the B9 is worth spending up for.

No issue at all with gaming, I have the 85 with a PS5 Pro. I play a variety of games and haven't had any issues. Even playing COD the input lag isn't noticeable to me. It's fantastic and the games look amazing on this TV!

I picked up the 85" 9 for my bright living room. It replaced a 65" LG OLED that had burn-in. The 9 is awesome, super bright, and my family and friends love watching all types of content and game (PS5) on it.

I love my 75" B9 it's amazing, I got it back in October and still can't watch it without feeling amazement compared to my old 65" Sony x900h, it's such a major step up and it handles light and image processing better than anything else I've seen, I used to hate the judder on my old TV, but have not noticed it at all on this one.

I game on my Bravia 9 85" all the time without any issues. Bravia 9 has 18ms input lag at 60hz in Game mode, 9ms at 120hz. LG G5 OLED has roughly half of those numbers. That said, Sony is absolutely more than good enough for gaming.

That's where it shines, imho. Some very, very minor tweaking to the settings based purely on personal preference. The blacks may not be OLED level quality but I sure as the Pope poops in the woods can't find a damn thing to complain about. I've yet to notice any blooming, motion blur, soap opera effect.

Sounds like my in depth review too, amazing tv that's all I can say. My only regret is not going 85".

I own it. 100% worth it. TV can go to almost 3000 nits and is able to tone map content up to 4000 nits with minimal compromise. Blooming is present in certain circumstances, but minimal thanks to the backlighting solution. Pinpoint bright lights like stars are still a weakness and don't pop the same way they do on an OLED.

The claim that the 75-inch B9 is significantly worse than the 85-inch due to fewer dimming zones has been going around for 3-4 years and is total bullshit. Whenever someone is asked to post side-by-side comparisons made by someone reliable, they don't have anything to post.

I also have the 85" Bravia 9 it's excellent. Sony has always been excellent. Originally X900F then the X93L now Bravia 9 — all tvs have been good to me in processing.

I own a Bravia 9 85 inch. It replaced my 77" A80J. It's fantastic. Sports look fantastic. But you're gonna love the fact that it just looks brighter, never lowering its brightness like an OLED would. The motion processing on Sony's has always been great.

The Bravia 9 looks 96% as good as an OLED but without the burn in risk and way better reflection handling. I think Bravia 9 is a spectacular looking TV with the most up to date operating system. I'd be very very happy getting that instead of an OLED.

What dark room? It will get so bright you'll think its 9am on a sunday in Phoenix. It's also 95% OLED and when tuned properly won't leave you wishing you'd gone OLED. This is coming from a B8/B9 owner.

I have a Bravia 9 and an A80J OLED. Judder is the effect of 24p in 60p resulting in 3-2 frame cadence. Both TVs have ample settings to combat this.

The backlight system on the Bravia 9 is next level. Basically the backlight system has its own zones that can add far more detail to the picture. Being able to do that adds so much more control over the picture, and is why it feels like it is so close to OLED.

The Bravia 7 is absolutely terrible for reflections. So I'd say yes the 9 is worth it.

I got a PS5 Pro specifically for my 85 inch Bravia 9 and it's glorious. I think the only downside would be if you're doing super competitive FPS gaming — a TCL with low input lag or OLED would be better for that.

I have the Bravia 9, and it is the best TV I've ever owned. I got the Bravia 9 after owning the LG C3, and I didn't like the washed out image and low brightness of the C3. Sony has phenomenal image processing, generally speaking, and this comes through in the Bravia 9.

It's expensive. Very. But oh man is it an incredible tv. Went from OLED to an 85" Bravia 9 and I don't notice a difference in contrast. Yes, it's probably there, but I don't notice it. It's bright and the blacks and contrast are top notch. No more fear of screen burning or sun hitting the screen.

I have the 85" B9 using the latest firmware. Amazing tv, but I don't think it will be able to satisfy you on the judder on slow moving shots. I personally don't think it does an amazing job at it unless you turn on motion interpolation to max which introduces SOE.

My x950G died so it got replaced by the B9. Been using it for a few months now, and man, what an upgrade! The blacks are definitely 'almost OLED' and the only tell tale signs it isn't OLED is pixel response time.

I have a Bravia 7 and it's fantastic but the handling of reflections is terrible. The Bravia 9 has a coating to help with this issue. I also have a Samsung OLED and find the Bravia 7's quality comparable.

I upgraded from an A90J OLED to the Bravia 9 and gaming for me got better. If you put auto dimming on high it almost emulates the deep darks OLED has and bloom is practically eliminated with the Bravia 9.

I have the 85". It's a great TV but there does seem to be an annoying coil whine from the PSU when viewing Dolby Vision content with power saving disabled. Basically, the brighter the content the worse the noise. It's not that noticeable when viewing louder content but it definitely gets in your ear in quiet scenes or when the volume is low. I've had an engineer out to swap the PSU on the TV and it made zero difference.

No judder on my Bravia 9 in my viewing of sports and Netflix series. My room is brighter than I thought so I'm very happy that the B9 is so bright. I have had audio dropout issues with eARC over HDMI to a receiver. There are long threads in avsForums about it. The workarounds are to use optical audio out from the TV, but that has drawbacks, or unplug the TV about once a day. Annoying.

It's amazing. It is a huge upgrade from my old LG CX. I also tried the G4 as well before deciding and the B9 was way too good to pass on. Plus, I got my 65" for $1300.

I have an 85 inch B9. I originally got the 75" and once it was on the wall, and I saw how great the picture was, I called Best Buy and set up a swap for the 85". I haven't seen blooming... the HDR pop is insane... and the blacks are near OLED. It's the best of both worlds.

The biggest difference is glare. I've had both. The B9 is very impressive, but so is the B7. The B7 is a mirror. Any light source in front of it within the angle of reflection will show. If there is a window behind you, get the B9.

In my room with windows all around the Bravia 9 absolutely blows away anything else I've tried. Full daylight and you don't even notice. Highly recommend.

I just saw it and preferred it so I bought it. Every other mini LED was inferior to OLED, but the Bravia 9 closed the gap, providing deep blacks and contrast almost on par with OLED but had way more pop because of the more brilliant lights. It was an easy decision for me.

Most would not be able to pick out the Bravia 9 in a side by side picture comparison with the Bravia 7. The picture is nearly identical to the naked eye. The core processing technologies are the exact same, at a much lower price point, making the 7 a much better value.

OLED people say a lot of things. I own a C3 and an 85 X95L and the mini LED is better for gaming. HDR just pops way more even in a bright room. My C3 also has burn in which sucks. Mini LED for me from now on.

I went with the 7 in the 75-inch size. I compared it with the 9, and honestly, I didn't notice a big difference in picture quality. The 7 looked excellent to me, and it was $1,000 cheaper.

I have the 75" Bravia 9 and a 55" A95L. Playing on the Bravia 9 is amazing. No input lag that I can see and this thing is a light cannon in terms of brightness. Best two TVs I've ever owned.

I struggled to get a satisfactory image compared to OLED on a B9 75. With VRR enabled the motion was a deal breaker for me with PC gaming. I had to turn off VRR to make it better. It's hard to beat OLED for that instant pixel response, especially on competitive games with quick camera pans.

I have a 75 B9 I bought a week ago for a bright room and a G4 in the bedroom. The Bravia 9 is close but in dark environments OLED is just much better. If you don't have direct sunlight or a bright room, go OLED — else Bravia 9 is as good as it gets.

I have both Bravia 9 and A95L 65". A95L crisper and more vivid picture. The Bravia 9 replaced a Samsung, it's great but I don't know if worth the Sony tax.

Do you notice backlight issues when watching HDR movies? It's hard to unsee once you've seen it. It's almost as if dimming zones can't keep up with a bright foreground and dark background. I love the brightness and everything but it's not enough when you have that issue, especially for $3800.

I bought the 75" B9 as my family room is bright with outside light. I couldn't be happier with my decision. I also have a Samsung S90C which I moved to my bedroom. I much prefer the B9 over my Samsung.

I just got my 85" B9 for a week, coming from the 85" Samsung QN85. The B9 picture quality is way better, the black is at OLED level and I only set the local dimming to medium for better shadow details. The specular highlights are simply amazing even for SDR, the picture is so immersive that it feels like 3D. Best TV I ever own.

I wanted an A95L but burn in is a real thing when playing video games that have static images such as HUD for long hours. Bought a B9 and got it professionally calibrated and I am blown away by the picture quality. I use it in the basement and set the brightness to 5 for most content and it is perfect.

The only issue I've ever had after 4 months of consistent usage is that one time the TV froze on the Sony Bravia Core app. My experience with the native YouTube and Netflix apps has been amazing. No issues whatsoever.

I have a B9 85" and I find the motion handling pretty average, disappointing even, to be honest. I watch a fair bit of sport, I went from a smaller top of range Samsung QN95B 65" to the Sony B9, and I found the Samsung superior with motion handling.
