Summary

The TCL Q651G is TCL's 2024 mid-range QLED entry, positioned as a budget-friendly upgrade over the Q650G with a better processor, improved brightness, and wider size availability for gaming features. Reddit sentiment is mixed but leaning positive for buyers who picked it up at a steep discount — especially the 75-inch at $314. Most complaints revolve around its lack of local dimming, the 120Hz caveat (only available at 1440p on 55–85" models, not native 4K), and inconsistent regional specs that make cross-market comparisons tricky. For casual viewers and light console gamers who aren't chasing OLED or mini-LED performance, the Q651G holds up well — but enthusiasts are quick to point toward the QM5K or QM6K as a smarter step up.

Pros

  • Significantly better processor than the Q650G — users report a noticeably more responsive Google TV interface with faster app launches and less input lag
  • 30W speakers vs 20W on the Q650G, with multiple users noting a genuine improvement in audio quality
  • Reaches around 600 nits peak brightness, roughly 25% brighter than the previous generation — better HDR pop in moderately lit rooms
  • 120Hz support with AMD FreeSync Premium on 55"+ models makes it usable for console gaming on Xbox and PS5 at 1440p
  • The 98" variant supports native 4K 120Hz — one of the few budget options to hit that spec at that screen size
  • Deals at $314 for a 75" make it nearly impossible to find competing large-screen performance at that price

Cons

  • No full array local dimming on the standard Q651G — blacks and HDR contrast are limited, making it a poor pick for dark room cinephiles
  • 120Hz is only available at 1440p (via resolution halving) on the 55–85" models — users report visible sharpness loss at that mode, not true native 4K 120Hz
  • Regional spec inconsistencies cause real confusion: the C655 (international equivalent) has different brightness, HDMI specs, and even different FALD availability depending on the country
  • Some units show backlight uniformity issues — at least one report of a dim horizontal band at the bottom of the 43" model persisting across multiple TV replacements
  • Audio desync in game mode reported by at least one owner, though others couldn't reproduce it — points to possible QC variance between units
  • Stepping up to the QM5K or QM6K (often $50–100 more) buys proper mini-LED local dimming, which most enthusiasts argue is a much bigger real-world picture upgrade

Is the Q651G's 120Hz Real or Marketing?

Reddit dug into the specs and the answer is: technically real, but with a catch. The 55–85" models hit 120Hz only at 1440p through resolution halving — users report visible softness. Only the 98" gets native 4K 120Hz. TCL's own website listed conflicting refresh rates, adding to the confusion.

The $314 Deal That Turned Skeptics Into Buyers

Walmart's occasional flash pricing on the 75Q651G at $314 generated a wave of positive posts — users who initially weren't interested became genuinely happy owners. At that price, the lack of local dimming is easy to forgive. At full retail, the QM5K starts to look like a smarter investment.

Same Model, Different TV Depending on Your Country

International buyers comparing the Q651G to its C655 equivalent found significant spec differences — HDMI 2.1 availability, FALD presence, and brightness figures vary by region under the same branding. Redditors in Southeast Asia, Mexico, and Australia all reported different hardware in what's supposed to be the same TV.

Unfortunately, the sub is all mini led snobs.

Yes, it is a great tv, Hardly any noticeable blooming, and very good brightness, and a good gaming TV for console with 120hz display. Great deal, dont listen to the haters, I would snatch that up in a second for a bedroom TV.

It's not garbage, but it's still entry level. I'm looking at buying a QM6K or QM7K which are more mid-level (faster refresh rate, bright color, and QD Mini LED instead of QLED). I'm sure a Q651G is better than your 2013 TV.

I got the same deal from Walmart. Bought 2 for my mom, very satisfied! She's not picky or anything so I was just going for whatever was cheapest on sale, but I think this TV is a tier above the one I have for myself.

There are certainly much better TVs out there but nothing at 75" for $314. You would have to spend 2 or 3 times as much to actually get something decent. Even a 55" TV at that price is going to be an entry level budget model.

You can get the 75 qm5k at best buy for $599 right now. This would be a big improvement. The TV you're looking at doesn't even have local dimming. I would forgo the warranty and pay $100 more and get a good quality tv.

I love my tv, I think the picture looks great on it. I do know that the Q series has better color accuracy and brightness than the S series, so if those are important to you, then I'd say yes, it is an upgrade.

Im extremely sorry. The model is actually 25% brighter. 600nits peak. I measured with phones lux meter app and it reports 590 nits.

The Q651G tv supports 4k60 and 1080p/1440p @120hz just like last year. The only difference this year is that you can now get the game accelerator on smaller sizes like the 50 and 43 inch. It also got 200 nits brighter. Apparently it has a better processor that should make a more seamless Google TV experience.

98Q651 is 4K 120Hz. 55-85" Q651 is 2K 120Hz using Dual Line Gate. 43-50" Q651 is 4K 60Hz.

Walmart apparently has random flash deals where the price on this drops to $314 but there's also a telegram message group out there that alerts them when these deals pop up so the chances of you stumbling upon it are slim unless you're part of that group or are actively looking for deals on the daily.

I got the 75Q651G at the sale price. I was expecting this TV to look way worse and I'm actually surprised. It has really good black uniformity for a non-local-dimming set.

I have used the TCL 65Q650 and then got it replaced with 65Q651. The main difference is better handling of noise level and contrast, the TV has better pre calibrated settings compared to the 2023 model. The other difference is the processor on the new model is much better, the TV is very responsive and doesn't lag. The 650 was very slow when it came to opening the apps, the 651 is much more responsive. The speaker on the new model is 30W compared to 20W on the older model.

I bought the TV today. It does have real 120hz refresh rate. No frame interpolation or insertion bs. It seems the panel is only native 60hz since that's the max refresh rate at its native 4k resolution. But when switched to 1440p, the TV's refresh rate genuinely becomes 120hz. The only problem is the visual quality takes a significant hit when you enable 120fps. There is a very clear loss of clarity and sharpness. It looks much more like 1080p even though the TV says 1440p.

The loss of visual quality at 120fps is because the 120hz @ 1440p is accomplished by the panel doing resolution halving.

Both tvs have 60hz refresh rate. The differences I found were just small things. 43Q651G is a 2024 model, has two 15W speakers, and USB 2.0. 43Q51K is a 2025 model, has two 10W speakers, and USB 3.0.

The OS is a bit laggy, but if it gets unbearable I do have an older Apple TV that I can use. The sound is decent. I don't have anything to compare it to. Works for me.

The new processor itself on q651g makes it a better purchase considering the sluggish performance on q650g.

I have had my Q650g for almost two weeks and it's pretty good. The blacks are actually pretty good imo for not having local dimming.

RTings is a very useful resource but the quickness with which they change reviews is annoying. They say the Q651 is an awful gaming TV now when previous reviews had it as the best budget gaming TV. The TV didn't change just because a newer TV exists.

Audio is extremely delayed when using game mode on the Q651G line. Going without game mode there is no out-of-sync audio, just horrendous input delay.

I actually bought this TV a few weeks ago and never experienced any audio issues, even while gaming. I don't know what setup you have, but you may have to mess around with the delay setting until it sounds right enough.

Bought this tv and it's glitchy I've had it for 1 week and regret my purchase already. I was watching the vampire diaries and it was pixelated and would skip/lag.

According to what TCL told me over the phone, this year's model can do 120 Hz at 4K with variable refresh rate. It also is roughly 25% brighter than last year's model, totaling to a maximum brightness of around 600 nits.

I have C61B which is basically a C655 in SEA Region, My TV has HDMI 2.1, but in rtings review they are stating that it doesnt have one. From my point of view C655 != Q651G, TCL might be launching different spec TVs over different regions.

TCL TV models varies in every region, Q651G supposed to be the equivalent of the C655 in southeast asia which does not have FALD, whereas the C655 pro has the FALD and up to 600 nits on HDR.

The main difference between Q651G and Q681G is full array local dimming, allowing blacks to be darker and a higher contrast.

I'm planning on the 651 ($1200 instead of $900 for the 85"), but wanted to check on this detail just to make sure. Most of my devices wouldn't be able to take advantage of the 4k120hz since the tv will accept HDMI 2.1, but my devices are all HDMI 2.0.

The 85 inch Q6 has native 4k 144hz and real hdmi 2.1 ports which will allow something like a ps5 to utilize vrr and play at 120hz. Which is why I returned the Q5 and upgraded to the Q6.

Just returned that exact TV a couple weeks ago. Yes, I probably got a bit of a lemon, but the QM5K I replaced it with has a much better picture and was in the same ball park price wise.

The 65 inch qm6k is only 20 bucks more than this 75 inch q6, which even though it's bigger the quality difference is way more worth it on the 6k for just that little bit more.

If you're just watching streaming and Blu-ray and it's a big size jump then yes [it's worth it].

I'm just shocked that I went through three different TVs only for them to all have the same issue in the same exact place. A dim horizontal section at the bottom of the screen.

From what I remember the biggest size in that lineup has the higher refresh rate. Don't think it will have local dimming though so not ideal for true HDR performance.
