Summary

The TCL QM851G (QM8) has earned a strong reputation among Reddit users as one of the best value mini-LED TVs on the market, consistently praised for jaw-dropping brightness and solid local dimming performance. Users upgrading from mid-range OLEDs like the LG C1, C2, and B3 regularly report that the QM8 delivers 85-95% of the OLED experience at a fraction of the cost, making it especially compelling at larger screen sizes where OLED pricing gets prohibitive. It performs well for sports, 4K streaming, and gaming, though it requires some patience with firmware updates and calibration to unlock its full potential. The Google TV OS has drawn complaints about sluggishness — particularly on the 2024 model — and a handful of HDMI ARC/eARC quirks persist. Overall, this TV punches well above its price point and is a top pick for bright rooms and large-screen buyers who want OLED-adjacent quality without OLED pricing.

Pros

  • Exceptional peak brightness that outshines most OLEDs — users report needing to drop brightness to 20-30% in normal rooms, with some content literally causing squinting
  • Local dimming performance is strong for a mini-LED, with blooming that most users find acceptable and contrast levels that regularly impress former OLED owners
  • Available in massive screen sizes (up to 98") where OLED alternatives are either unavailable or extremely expensive, making it the go-to pick for large living rooms
  • HDR gaming performance draws strong praise — Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077, and PS5 content are frequently cited as looking spectacular with dynamic tone mapping
  • No ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiting) dimming on bright scenes, a major pain point with OLEDs that drove several users to specifically choose the QM8 instead
  • Firmware update pipeline via AVS Forum beta releases has delivered meaningful picture and motion improvements, giving owners a path to better performance without hardware changes

Cons

  • Google TV OS on the 2024 model has serious performance issues — one user reported menus taking 15-20 seconds to respond compared to near-instant on the 2023 model
  • HDMI ARC port is limited to 60Hz and has known bugs with Dolby Atmos passthrough, forcing workarounds for users with AVR setups
  • VRR implementation has issues in the 50-80Hz range with reported overshoot and ghosting, making it unreliable for variable-framerate PC gaming
  • Off-angle viewing performance is a known weakness of the VA panel — relevant for households with wide seating arrangements or social viewing setups
  • Getting the best picture quality requires installing beta firmware from AVS Forum and doing manual calibration; out-of-the-box settings leave performance on the table
  • Dark bars and black backgrounds fall short of true OLED blacks — owners who watch a lot of dark content in pitch-black rooms may notice the gap more than casual viewers

Is the QM851G Actually Worth Replacing Your OLED?

Reddit is full of OLED owners who switched and stayed. Several users with LG C2, C3, and C4 panels picked up the 98-inch QM851G and returned the OLED — not because it beats OLED on contrast, but because at that screen size, nothing else comes close on value.

The Firmware Treadmill Is Real

TCL's public firmware lags behind the beta releases on AVS Forum by months, and multiple users say the picture quality difference between stock and beta firmware is substantial. If you're not willing to manually flash updates, you may not be getting the TV you paid for.

Google TV on the 2024 Model Is a Problem

One of the most consistent complaints about the QM851G involves the 2024 model's OS speed — with users describing menus that take 15-20 seconds to respond. Most power users sidestep this entirely by running an Apple TV 4K or Nvidia Shield, treating the built-in OS as a fallback.

I went from a LG 77" C2 to a TCL 98" 851G. The QM8 holds up incredibly well. PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch both look amazing on it.

I was looking at the LG C4/G4 and comparing it to the QM8 and U8N. To me the QM8 delivers 90-95% of the picture of the C4 for a fraction of the price. I have no regrets about skipping OLED.

I returned my LG C4 for the QM851G and couldn't be happier.

I have a 55" LG C1 in one room and an 85" 2023 QM8 in my living room. Pound for pound, the QM8 holds up quite well against the C1.

I got a 75" QM8 a little over a week ago. It's great so far. 4K movies are badass, super clear. Streaming NBA games are decent, but NFL looks amazing.

I was debating between the QM7 and the QM8. I don't regret my decision and went for the QM8. This thing is super bright though lol. I have my brightness down to 20/30 and it's still pretty darn bright. Amazing picture though coming from my LG OLED.

I have both the QM7 and QM8 — hardly any difference.

Step 1: Update to the test firmware — tons of improvements. Step 2: Use Game Mode for every input/signal type. Other settings add latency that is very noticeable.

I recently bought a QM7 and I'm blown away by the contrast, blacks, and colour. While OLED is at a different level, the differences are much smaller than I thought. OLED is still not worth the price increase unless you can afford a high end model like a Sony or LG G4.

I actually have both TVs — a Bravia 7 65" and a TCL 65QM851G. If I only need to have one TV, I would keep the Bravia 7. However, the TCL QM851G is no slouch and could be worth saving $400+ if budget is concerned.

The big difference between the QM7 and QM8 is the number of dimming zones. I watch a lot of dark content that relies heavily on contrast and found the blooming performance to be worth the ~$200 price difference.

I purchased two of them — a 65" and 75" — and I have not experienced any problems. Both locations I have the sets in are too bright for OLED TVs so the QM851G is the best choice without paying Sony tax for a Bravia 9 or 7.

Something really important — OLED prices over 65 inches are ridiculous. If you want a large screen 75", 85" etc., then it's really hard to justify OLED. The QM8 makes a lot more sense at those sizes.

Had the Q7 for about a year before upgrading to the QM851G. The QM8 is definitely a step up, for sure. The upgrade was well worth it.

The latest TCL QM851G beta firmware massively improved picture quality all around and video games are as good as it gets now. Everything Hisense was beating TCL on is no longer a thing. Amazing update.

I just got a 75" QM850. Overall it's been great, but I've had some issues with the ARC functionality. There is a known bug that limits or prevents the TV from passing Atmos from any input or app to ARC. The ARC port is not full HDMI 2.1, and only does 4K/60.

I have both a 65" LG B3 and a 65" QM851. Both are great to watch. The QM8 is much brighter and more vibrant colors which I personally like. The backlight is amazing and well controlled, but you can see the OLED contrast is superior. Minimal blooming on the QM8 but dark bars are not totally black — very good contrast though.

The QM851G picture quality is only impressive if you install the latest beta firmware update. I'm loving my 98-inch. Motion smoothing and jitter reduction is greatly improved in the latest beta update.

I just bought a QM8 98 two weeks ago and had it wall mounted. It looks fantastic. The first movie I watched was the new Top Gun. The image was so clear and bright! I highly recommend to anyone.

TCL bad VRR — 50-80Hz isn't working well, massive overshoot and ghosting. It's just unplayable.

I have an Xbox and a Gaming PC hooked up to the QM8 and it works great for me. Only downside is the eARC HDMI port is only 60Hz, so if you wanted to run audio over eARC and hook up your console to your receiver, you'll be limited to 60Hz.

Just ordered the 65-QM851G from Costco Canada. I have seen so many reviews and Reddit posts and decided to go with TCL instead of Hisense U8N due to QC issues with Hisense.

I have the 2023 65" QM8. No issues with the Google apps being sluggish or freezing at all. I love mine. Picture quality is awesome if the content is good.

I love my 65" QM851G. I get a little annoyed at the slow operating system but I have noticed a periodic system restart keeps it running smoothly. I personally prefer the Roku interface but have adjusted to Google TV.

I bought a 65" QM8 2023 model in October — it's been amazing, fast and beautiful. I loved it so much I bought another 65" QM8 but the 2024 model, thinking it would be even better. The 2024 model is SUPER SLOW, almost unusable at times, especially compared to the 2023 that is blazing fast. Bringing up the language menu in Amazon Prime can take 15-20 seconds versus instant on the 2023.

I recently purchased both an 83" LG C4 and the 98" TCL QM851G, had them in the house at the same time. We ended up sticking with the TCL and returned the LG. I've been an OLED diehard ever since and never thought I'd go back to an LED TV but here we are, which just speaks to how good the QM851 is.

I have a C3 and QM8. QM8 stacks up well especially watching sports. Anything Dolby Vision at night, OLED still reigns supreme.

I've never had an OLED TV, but I do have an Alienware OLED monitor that was widely regarded as the best OLED monitor not long ago. I honestly prefer my 2023 QM8 + Nvidia Shield.

I just got the QM8 this week. I flashed the firmware update via USB to beta 27. Glad I went with the brightest — I have to squint during bright scenes.

I chose the QM851G over the Bravia 7 or 9 due to the brightness and other metrics related to my usage. The general consensus is the QM851G is better than the Bravia 7 for my use case. You really can't go wrong between any of these high-end TVs — it's about which metrics matter most to you.

I upgraded from a 2017 LG B7 OLED. For my use — sports, news, series and movies via Plex in a bright living room — the TCL is so much more bang for the buck. I will never spend money on an OLED again.

I have C7, C2, and C3 OLEDs and also have the 98QM851 at my office. It's almost OLED — I'd say 85% there. But the screen size is so immersive it doesn't matter. I have another 98QM851 on order and I'm returning the 77 C3.

The QM5K doesn't even have proper local dimming. The black levels are absolutely trash on the QM5K. The QM8 is a completely different level.
