Summary

The TCL QM9K is a high-end QD Mini-LED TV that has generated strong enthusiasm among buyers looking for a big-screen alternative to OLED. Sentiment across Reddit is mostly positive from actual owners, who praise its stunning brightness, excellent black levels for an LCD, and impressive HDR performance. However, the TV sits in an awkward value position — the QM8K is frequently recommended as the smarter buy, and the price premium over the QM8K is hard to justify unless you catch it on a significant sale. The QM9K is best suited for large rooms, bright viewing environments, or anyone who wants the biggest screen possible without jumping to the $5,000+ OLED tier. It runs Google TV 14 (Android 14 on some firmware versions) and features around 6,000 local dimming zones, which puts it ahead of the QM8K's 3,800, though real-world contrast differences are subtle in most content.

Pros

  • Exceptional peak brightness for an LCD — owners consistently describe HDR highlights and 4K/Dolby Vision content as 'wow' moments, especially in dark room viewing
  • ~6,000 local dimming zones deliver near-black levels that surprise even former OLED owners, with blooming described as minimal and natural-looking in typical content
  • Available in a 98" size at price points ($3,000–$3,500 on sale) that make it one of the only ways to get a premium large-screen experience without paying OLED prices
  • Google TV 14 (vs. Google TV 12 on QM8K) brings a more modern smart TV interface, and firmware updates have actively improved image quality and motion handling post-launch
  • Built-in Bang & Olufsen tuned speakers receive surprisingly positive feedback — owners report usable bass and quality that holds up without a soundbar for casual use
  • Open-box and sale pricing (as low as $1,499 for 65", $3,000–$3,500 for 98") dramatically improves its value proposition over MSRP

Cons

  • Motion processing is a real weak point — multiple owners flagged it as noticeably worse than competitors like the LG QNED92A, and blur reduction settings are often best left off entirely
  • No chipset upgrade over QM8K: the QM9K uses the same AIPQ Pro processor, meaning upscaling quality for DVD and standard HD content lags behind Sony Bravia 7 and 9
  • Value math rarely works at full MSRP — at $2,999 for 65" and $5,999 for 98", it competes directly with OLED options; most Redditors recommend stepping down to QM8K or up to OLED
  • Panel lottery is a documented issue — at least one owner received a unit with a visible vertical uniformity defect (dark gray band across screen), requiring a replacement from Best Buy
  • Humming at high brightness levels and thermal management concerns have been flagged by reviewers, with gaming performance reportedly below the QM7K and QM8K in some benchmarks
  • Dark scene clouding around detailed objects remains present even on later firmware (V590/Android 14), falling short of OLED's micro-contrast in critical viewing conditions

Firmware Updates Are Actually Fixing It

Unlike many TV launches, TCL has been actively pushing updates that improve the QM9K post-purchase. Owners on firmware V509 through V590 have noted real improvements in motion handling, EOTF accuracy, and super resolution — making early negative reviews less relevant than they once were.

The 98" Case: Where It Actually Makes Sense

The QM9K's value argument falls flat in 65" and 75" sizes, where OLED alternatives are close in price. But the 98" model at $3,000–$3,500 on sale occupies a near-unique position — the only competitor at that size with comparable performance costs thousands more.

European Buyers Are Getting a Better Deal

Reddit users in Romania, Croatia, and Portugal have sourced the 65" C9K (the European QM9K equivalent) for €1,300–€1,500 with cashback and discount stacking — significantly underpricing US availability and making it a much easier recommendation in those markets.

I think it's because people aren't buying the QM9K as much and they are over stocked. Most people step it down to the QM8K. AND they need to make way for the upcoming QM8L and QM9L soon.

There isn't a better value for a very bright room.

You said 'pretty lit' which is at least somewhat subjective. OLED's typically don't get bright enough for bright, sunny rooms unless you get the very brightest, high end product. I would probably recommend the QM7 or QM8.

If you're trying to stay under $4k at 10 feet, just get an 85" qm8k for $1,797 on Amazon and call it a day. Or if you want true immersion I'd get the 98" qm7k. The biggest difference is local dimming zones and brightness.

Thank you for posting this. I had no idea this TV was being released. I had a QM8K for delivery tomorrow from Best Buy and I just canceled the order after this article.

I have the same viewing distance at 8-9 ft and got the 65". I regret not going with the 75".

Good that there are happy customers mixed in with all the negative ones.

I know rtings say it isn't worth it but I've had both the qm8k and qm9k. The qm9k is so much better. Colors are better, and easier to set in movie mode. Its black levels are even cleaner and it's significantly brighter than the 8k. I settled on the qm9k which was worth the price difference to me.

I generally wouldn't base a TV's performance based on how it looks in the store. They're not playing the content you're gonna be watching and it's not setup in a room similar to the one you'll be watching in. I have a QM7K and while I acknowledge the QM8K and QM9K are better on paper, I haven't ever been watching on the 7K and felt 'I wish this looked better'.

It's not microled but it is a good tv and a good value especially compared to something like a Bravia 9.

I've had a 98QM8K for 6 months in a large greatroom with total windows on the south side. After fine tuning it was good but after update V313, it is great even during daytime. I could not be happier especially for price of 98" TV.

Qm9k is gorgeous. Have the 98 inch. Really nice. Only caveat: MOTION. The motion processing is noticeably worse, so much so that I have to return. Just can't get past it. Compared to LGqned92a, motion is just unquestionably worse. Which is a shame, because the TCL beats the LG in literally every other category that matters.

From the reviews I've seen of both it looks like there's not enough of a difference between the two to justify the higher price jump. If I'm going to shell out the money for a 9k might as well look into OLED.

The qm8k could be had for often as low as 1000 for the 65. The qm9k has never been that low and tends to hit 1500 when on a good sale.

I have the QM8K in a bright but controlled room and it is great when the sun is up and killer at night. I replaced a 75" Sony LED with the same size TCL and I should have went to the 85".

After being a heavy OLED enthusiast for 10 years, I heavily considered this as well. The QM9K is definitely one of the best LCDs available, but even with the zone count, in a dark room it still cannot match OLED.

If you're choosing strictly on picture quality I would stick with OLED, the only reason I would ever switch would be if I was going to a 98 inch or above, in that size LED becomes viable.

My 98" 8k cost half that during the most recent sale. 9k is not worth double.

I only wonder why someone needs more black when this is in my opinion at least 90% what OLED can do for half the price. But what OLED can't do is that vivid bright HDR punch in certified content.

The sound is surprisingly good. Bass is there. Obviously bass in a good soundbar is stronger but here it is so good enough that for now I have dropped the soundbar while organising some Dolby Atmos speakers.

I have a qm9k, it's received two firmware updates since a lot of reviews were done. They added a new motion setting and I noticed it's a bit more refined since I got it. Blooming is almost non existent. But is it 1k better than qm8k, not sure?

Both are great but that 98" size is hard to beat for a movie room.

The TCL QM9K and QM8K both use TCL's AIPQ Pro processor for upscaling. The QM9K does not appear to have a significantly improved or different chipset from the QM8K, meaning their basic upscaling technology is similar. However, the QM9K features a more advanced Halo Control System with around 6,000 local dimming zones compared to 3,800 on the QM8K.

I heard last night in a video that the QM9K has the same processor as the QM8K. I'm very disappointed.

Viewing angles are not good. If you sit directly in front then they seem ok. I've had the 6k and 7k. I could never get the color looking right on skin tones. I'm picky. Went with the lg oled instead. I would recommend the 8k since you said bright room. The real difference is the refresh rates and dimming zones. 8k+ will get you close to oled contrast levels with minimal halo or bloom.

QM9K is such a fucking amazing set for the price. If I wasn't happy with my QM7 and saving for a house, I'd likely get it over anything else right now.

I intended to purchase a 98" QM8K this weekend but found an open box 98" QM9K and negotiated a ~5% price difference from the QM8K. When searching QM9K vs QM8K the internet generally advises against the newer model. This is one of the first positive reviews I've come across, thanks for that and making my purchase feel more validated.

Got a qm9k 98" about 10 days ago. Love the set. I noticed a really bad gray uniformity issue on mine. It shows up on shows with softer gray tones. Considering I paid 4K for the set, Best Buy is bringing me a new set to swap out. The panel lottery is real.

I also got a c9k in 65" version for around 1300€. Out of the box the dovi and hdr are really good. SDR and low quality tv content needed a lot more work. Came from lg oled cx and actually the blacks are really good on this tv compared to oled. Amazing color reproduction. And the brightness! The motion was better on LG.

I almost bought LG C5 but I was surprised seeing in flesh that even qm7k/c7k was handling noticeably better bright screen areas in HDR content than C5 sitting next to it playing the same content. On c9k HDR is sometimes just WOW and I am really happy with the overall picture quality and colours after some tweaking.

Just tested out Blue ray content, omg - you can see and hear the bitrate difference vs 4k streaming. Also worth noting that in Windows you can do HDR calibration of the tv connected with HDMI 2+ cable to the computer and it is totally worth to do it.

Yep still enjoying after 2 months. This new firmware improved image quality a bit (EOTF, super resolution). The only slightly noticeable thing is a little bit of clouding in very dark scenes with a lot of small brighter details.

Have the 85 Qm9k and absolutely love it, motion is a little weird out of the box but a few adjustments and have had no issues whatsoever. Absolutely favorite TV I own and I have been used to LG G series.

I personally would look at the QM9K because I'm an OLED snob and I would want the extra local dimming zones. Black levels and contrast are a must for me, and from what I heard the QM9K is really good with that, but also crazy bright when it comes to HDR performance and specular highlights.

I've heard too many red flags from reviewers about the 9K. This thing isn't able to cool itself properly and many reviewers reported hearing a humming at most brightness levels. Also the gaming performance is worse than the QM7K and QM8K.

The QM9K gets a bit brighter in both HDR and SDR, and it can sustain that brightness longer. This doesn't actually matter that much though, as most HDR content won't hit highlights that bright or for that long, so in most real content it looks about the same as the QM8K. The QM9K does have a more recent smart interface running Google TV 14 instead of 12 on the QM8K.

If you're used to OLED, Go the G5. I had the 98" QM8K for a few weeks, it's got NOTHING on the G5, eye searing brightness aside. I'd game on the 83" G5 every day vs that bigger QM8K. The image quality, HDR impact, motion, EVERYTHING is better.

I got the qm9k 98 for $3000 open box just today. I was torn between it and the x11k, but the x11k was $5500. Wasn't a good trade off when the open box deal was a 1/1.
